Use of Robotics enhances injection molding operations.

Robotics are being applied with increasing frequency in injection molding-related processes, from loading of components to finishing and assembling injection molded parts. Usage is destined to rise as robots are increasingly able to perform secondary tasks such as in-mold decorating, in-mold labeling, and automated insert loading. EPA sets stronger national air quality standard for sulfur dioxide.

U.S. EPA is issuing final new 1-hour health standard for sulfur dioxide that will protect millions of Americans from short-term exposure. Primarily emitted from power plants and other industrial facilities, EPA is setting standard at 75 ppb, a level designed to protect against short-term exposures ranging from 5 min to 24 hr. EPA is also revoking current 24-hour and annual SO2 health standards because science indicates that short-term exposures are of greatest concern. Read More

AIA Makes Statement on sections defense authorization bill.

Marion C. Blakey was encouraged by several space-related provisions included in Fiscal 2011 Defense Authorization Act. Specifically welcomed aspects included increase in top-line funding for missile defense as well as language supporting joint Defense Department and Director of National Intelligence national security space architecture. Fear of robots replacing workers is misplaced, as industrial robots can actually help companies compete by boosting quality and productivity. By enabling companies to turn out higher-quality and lower-cost goods to compete with those made in other nations, robots in factories can save and create more jobs than they eliminate. HID Lamp Indexes show across-the-board first quarter increases.

June 7, 2010

NEMA high intensity discharge (HID) lamp indexes for each major lamp type increased on year-over-year basis during first quarter of 2010. HID sodium lamps posted 7.5% gain, while mercury and metal halide lamps respectively rose 1.3% and 16.8%. Market share of metal halide lamps remains steady, constituting 6 of every 10 HID lamps sold, and sales of sodium vapor HID lamps represent ~1/3 of all HID lamps. Share of mercury vapor lamps has remained around 5.0% since 2008. Read More

ISO 26000 on Social Responsibility is approved for release as final draft..

Approved for release as Final Draft International Standard, ISO 26000 Guidance on social responsibility is intended to assist in ushering companies, government agencies, and other organizations toward more sustainable global economy by establishing common guidance on social responsibility concepts, definitions, and methods of evaluation. ISO 26000 will be released for 2-month FDIS vote by ISO member countries in August, and is expected to be published as International Standard by November. Read More

Support to Delay EPA Lead Rule urged by AAMA, Manufacturers.

On May 20, 2010, AAMA's Rich Walker met with U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-DE) and EPA and government/industry representatives to urge their support for 1-yr delay of EPA's Lead: Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule. Data presented showed EPA's cost estimates of compliance for window installation to be severely understated and that adverse market reaction was already being felt. Walker also said premature implementation of rule undermines 2009 and 2010 federal energy-efficient tax credits. Read More

NEMA's CFL Index posts solid growth during first quarter.

NEMA's compact fluorescent lamps index reversed negative trend that dated back to first quarter 2009, registering 3% year-over-year increase. Conversely, incandescent lamps index fell to second lowest level on record showing year-over-year decline of 2.2% during first quarter of 2010. Dichotomous growth patterns between residential incandescent lamps and medium screw-base CFLs resulted in CFLs regaining market share, increasing to 24.2% from 22.0% in 2009Q4. Read More

NEMA's T8 Fluorescent Lamp Index recoups losses from 2009.

NEMA's T8 lamp shipments index increased 7.2% during first quarter of 2010 compared to same period 1 year ago. Moreover, 2010Q1 reading is nearly 4.0% above level for all of 2009. T12 lamp shipments posted year-over-year growth of 5.0% for quarter, while shipments of T12 lamps have remained stable over past 8 quarters after experiencing significant declines in volume following initial phase-out of T12 magnetic ballasts that began July 1, 2005. ANSI seeks comments on proposed ISO technical activity.

Standardization Administration of China has submitted proposal to ISO for new field of technical activity, ISO TS/P 212, which would develop general technical rules on determining energy savings that could apply to renovation projects on existing or new building facilities, industrial utilities, and processes that seek to become more energy efficient. EBCI Slips in May but positive outlook remains.

North American business conditions continued to improve on balance in May, although positive sentiment was less widespread than previous month. Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions dropped 3 points to 68.8 but remained above 50 point level indicative of environment conducive to electroindustry growth for fifth straight month. Meanwhile, EBCI for future North American conditions rose 3.2 points to 77.1, its highest level since January. Read More

Manufacturing Activity remains strong in May.

According to report by Institute for Supply Management, manufacturing recovery remained strong in May. Overall index edged down slightly from 60.4 in April to 59.7 in May, and there were no significant movements in most of survey components such as production or orders. Recent upturn in housing activity due to expiration of homebuyer tax credit is having positive impact on some industries, while rise in employment component report to 59.9 is highest level in 6 years. Manufacturing Tradeshow Numbers break records in Mexico.

For second consecutive year, METALFORM Mexico successfully organized and launched its co-location with AWS Weldmex, FABTECH Mexico, and COATech tradeshows. This manufacturing event, largest in Latin America, was held in Mexico City from May 11-13, 2010. Co-located shows broke exhibit space and attendance records from previous year, noting respective increases of 29% and 34%. Also, participation from international exhibitors more than tripled. PMI President Selects Technical Committee co-chair.

Plumbing Manufacturers Institute (PMI) President Lee Mercer of Moen, Inc. made his selection for new co-chair to help lead PMI's Technical Committee. Mark Malatesta, fittings engineer for American Standard Brands, will serve alongside existing Co-chair Casey Hayes, director of engineered solutions for Haws Corporation.
