Plastics Industry Survey predicts improvement in jobs picture.

According to Spring 2010 survey by SPE and Gros Executive Recruiters, plastics industry professionals report gradually improving employment market. Number of companies likely to add employees this year is 47.6%, compared to 18.3% in last year's survey. Employees reported that they expect raises of 1-3% this year and 56.4% of managers concurred. In survey, 43% of employees reported they are somewhat to actively interested in finding a new job within next 12 months, down from 62% in 2007. Read More

IPC urges members to join balloting group for new IEEE standards.

IEEE's 1680.2 Draft Standard for Environmental Assessment of Imaging Equipment and 1680.3 Draft Standard for the Environmental Assessment of Televisions will go to ballot from July 16-August 15, 2010. Calling for manufacturers to adhere to 115 criteria, standards will impact entire electronics manufacturing supply chain. To voice its concern, IPC urges members to join ballot to ensure both standards maintain IEEE's tradition of technically and scientifically based standards. Read More

EPA WaterSense Program leads to reduced water use.

According to recent accomplishment report, EPA WaterSense program helped consumers save over 36 billion gallons of water and $267 million on water and sewer bills in 2009. WaterSense program, which helps raise awareness about smart water use and WaterSense-labeled products, helps consumers conserve water while maintaining high performance levels. In June 2009, ANSI joined 5 previously certified bodies as accredited to participate this program. Read More

BSA Partners with ABMA to stop counterfeit bearings.

BSA Board of Directors approved motion embracing anti-counterfeiting distributor partnership proposal from American Bearing Manufacturers Association (ABMA). With its approval, BSA agreed to embrace World Bearing Association (WBA) Awareness Campaign and help market it; market BSA's Top Ten reasons to buy from authorized distributors; and publish organizational statements and articles against counterfeiting. NIST Software Security Patent to help improve health IT privacy.

Computer security invention patented at NIST might help safeguard patient privacy in hospitals. This algorithm that can be built into larger piece of software is designed to control access to information systems and has attracted one company's attention for use in healthcare field. John Barkley, algorithm's creator, says "this software will provide dramatically improved security and privacy to patients" because "It solves the problem of overly broad access to patient information." NSF International certifies first European brass manufacturers.

NSF International announces that Italian-based K.M.E Brass S.R.L., S.A. Eredi Gnutti Metalli S.P.A., and Trafilerie Carlo Gnutti S.P.A. are the first European brass manufacturers certified to NSF's low lead content requirements for plumbing products. NSF/ANSI Standard 61, Annex G was developed to help protect public from exposure to lead by mandating maximum weighted average lead content of less than or equal to 0.25%in products that come into contact with drinking water. AAMA announces insulating glass certification program.

AAMA and Associated Labs, Inc. (ALI) have joined forces to offer insulating glass (IG) certification. As of July 1, 2010, National Fenestration Rating Council requires IG certification by listed, 3rd-party program for IG units used in products authorized for NFRC certification and labeled in accordance with the NFRC 700, Product Certification Program (PCP). Automakers urge drivers and passengers to buckle up.

Going into heavy travel period, Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers urged people to buckle up and urged Congress to enact federal sanctions encouraging states to strengthen safety belt enforcement laws into primary laws. Under primary enforcement laws, officers can stop motorist whenever they observe safety belt law being broken, making these violations the same as all other traffic law violations. NHTSA figures show that jurisdictions with primary laws generally have higher belt use rates. Read More

ACGIH releases two-tier Under Study list.

Designed to provide public with information of significant relevance regarding development status of chemical substance or physical agent, Under Study List will be updated annually by July 31 and presented in two-tier list. Tier 1 entries indicate which substances and agents may move forward as NIC or NIE in upcoming year, while Tier 2 consists of substances and agents that will not move forward, but will either remain on, or be removed from Under Study list for next year. UL to develop standard for wireless charging devices.

Helping manufacturers make safety a focus among emerging wireless technologies, UL is developing a first-edition standard for induction power transmitters and receivers for use with low-energy products. UL2738 applies to induction power transmitters, such as wireless battery chargers, employing magnetic induction coils that transmit energy to receiving coils in devices such as cell phones, portable media players, and global positioning devices. NEMA applauds energy usage information standards.

According to Smart Grid Interoperability Panel, a major step toward standardized format for communicating actionable information on energy consumption to U.S. households has been achieved. Acting on plan developed by a priority action plan team of experts convened by SGIP, NAESB has agreed to develop a basic energy usage data model standard, which defines information used to communicate between utilities and the customer, and defines how that information is organized. Subcommittee A05.13 on Structural Shapes and Hardware Specifications is at work on new standards - such as ASTM WK27436, Practice for Life-Cycle Cost Analysis of Corrosion Protection Systems on Iron and Steel Products - for engineers and architects who design with steel fabrications. Specifically, proposed standards will be used to evaluate costs of steel construction over project's lifetime and compare different corrosion protection systems on their impact to lifetime cost.
