NEMA's October EBCI indicates slight decline in business.

Data from NEMA's EBCI shows that index for current North American business conditions fell to 48 in October, which indicates more panelists than not report conditions have deteriorated. Better conditions were reported by 4 out of 25 panelists, while 5 out of 25 reported worse conditions, and majority reported conditions were unchanged. EBCI for North American conditions in 6 months climbed to 68, meaning more panelists than not expect business environment to improve. Read More

EPA recognizes top Green power purchasers.

U.S. EPA is releasing list of top 50 organizations using most renewable electricity. The Green Power Partnership's top purchasers use more than 12 billion kWh of green power annually, which is generated from renewable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, and low-impact hydropower. Intel Corporation tops list as largest single purchaser of green power, using more than 1.4 billion kWh annually, while Kohl's Department Stores and Whole Foods Market came in second and third. RIA announces new initiatives.

RIA has announced several changes that will have positive impact on association and services it provides to members and industry. Trade association has retooled and reinvented its convention, which will be unveiled with 66th Annual Convention and Exhibition March 7-11, 2011. RIA has also begun work on industry's first major fire damage standard, and has appointed Tim Shaw of Association and Communications Management Group to serve as interim executive director following departure of Don Manger. HDI conducted its inaugural HDI Support Center Director certification and training program in Bangalore, India, in partnership with QAI. Event was attended by 13 senior management professionals from IT service support organizations, banking majors, and technical support organizations. North American Robot Orders increase 34% over 9 months in 2010.

November 4, 2010

Statistics released by RIA show that 9,628 robots valued at $618.4 million were ordered through September by North American manufacturing companies, representing 34% gain in units over same period in 2009. Orders placed by non-automotive customers jumped 53%, with largest growth in semiconductor/electronics/photonics, while orders to automotive-related customers rose 18%. RIA estimates that over 200,000 robots are now at work in U.S. factories, while over one million are being used worldwide. Read More

ISPE announced that Joyce Chiu has achieved Certified Pharmaceutical Industry Professional(TM) credential by ISPE Professional Certification Commission, an independent governing board within ISPE. A member of ISPE since 2007, Chiu has over 20 years experience in technical fields related to chemistry and chemical engineering, including 6 years in life sciences industry. North American Robot Orders up 34% in first 9 months of 2010.

According to statistics released by RIA, a total of 9,628 robots valued at $618.4 million were ordered through September by North American manufacturing companies. This represents a gain of 34% in units and 45% in dollars over same period in 2009. Companies outside of North America ordered another 1,778 robots valued at $102.6 million from North American-based robotics companies during the period, a gain of 143% in units and 168% in dollars over first 9 months of 2009. Independent Panels to review data used for FEMA flood maps.

FEMA is using independent, third party process to aid in review and resolution of conflicting data related to Flood Insurance Rate Maps. Scientific Resolution Panels will serve as independent scientific bodies to resolve issues when conflicting technical data is presented. Contracted by FEMA, National Institute of Building Sciences will convene SRP by developing pre-qualified list of technical experts whose backgrounds cover fields of surface water hydrology, hydraulics, and coastal engineering. ASHRAE and IES collaborate on residential energy standard.

ASHRAE and Illuminating Engineering Society are working together to strengthen requirements in ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 90.2, Energy Efficient Design of Low-Rise Residential Buildings. ASHRAE's Board of Directors recommends that it be 30% more efficient than 2004 version. Standard would target home builders and code officials in an easy-to-understand format that is simple to use. Revised Building Energy Standard acheives more than 20% energy savings.

By following guidance in 2010 energy standard from ASHRAE and IES, more than 20% energy reduction can be achieved over savings in 2004 standard. ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2010, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, contains 109 addenda approved since 2007 standard was published. It is written in mandatory code language and offers code bodies opportunity to make significant improvement in energy efficiency of new buildings, additions, and major renovations. Read More

NREL conducts algae research for renewable fuel production.

November 4, 2010

NREL has accumulated almost 400 different algal strains for biofuels research, according to Al Darzins, following Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, and $800 million in new research on biofuels in American Recovery and Renewal Act. Agency is using IR light to sort out best oil-producing algae, which is non-destructive to cells and may have applications in crop protection. NREL is also working with Algenol, who have unique technology using algae to convert CO2 directly to ethanol. Read More

Martinovich and Steudle elected to lead AASHTO in 2011.

Susan Martinovich, P.E., Director, Nevada DOT was elected President of AASHTO, and Kirk T. Steudle P.E., director of Michigan DOT was elected Vice President. As AASHTO President, Martinovich will advocate for enactment of well-funded, multi-year, and flexible federal surface transportation program. Part of MDOT since 1987, Steudle currently chairs AASHTO Standing Committee on Performance Management and Subcommittee on Asset Management, and also serves on Executive Committee. Read More
