Draft standard ASTM WK46735, Guide for Evaluating the Variables that Can Increase the Durability of an Installed Flashing Assembly, will satisfy market need for standard to define durable flashing and will create level playing field for flashing manufacturers. Standard will provide measurable and process-based assessment elements to characterize performance of flashing assemblies. Proposed Standard covers composite electrical conductors.

ASTM B987, Specification for Carbon Fiber Composite Core/Thermoset Matrix for Use in Overhead Electrical Conductors, will establish methods used to measure critical properties of composite core products specifically for overhead power line applications. These properties allow composite conductor to perform at much higher power levels than traditional steelcore conductor. Utilities will use ASTM B987 to confirm that composite conductors they purchase will perform according to their line designs. Read More

Distributors outperform manufacturers in 3Q2014.

Used to track business activity in the power transmission/motion control industry, PTDA Business Index for 3Q2014 indicates slowing but continued positive growth. However, distributors reported more positive business activity and new orders for 3Q2014 than manufacturers, a notable change from 1Q and 2Q 2014. Despite upward swing, overall 3Q2014 PTDA Business Index reading of 67.5 was lower than previous quarter's reading of 68.7. Read More

ASTM E2903, Test Method for Measurement of the Effective Focal Spot Size of Mini and Micro Focus X-Ray Tubes will be useful for X-ray tube manufacturers as well as practitioners of digital radiography. Proposed standard ASTM WK46378, Specification for Energy Control Window Films for Residential and Commercial Buildings, will cover optical and physical properties as well as energy performance and durability requirements of energy control window films. Being developed by Subcommittee E44.20 on Optical Materials for Solar Applications, ASTM WK46378 is first industry standard setting minimum requirements for such films. ASTM Standard eliminates waste classification confusion.

Proposed standard ASTM WK38312, Classification for Waste From Manufacturing Facilities and Associated Support Facilities, covers all waste created in manufacturing facilities, including office and production waste, to help manufacturers address waste classification issues. Being developed by Subcommittee E60.13 on Sustainable Manufacturing, part of ASTM Committee E60 on Sustainability, standard will provide definitions and methods covering hazardous and nonhazardous wastes. ASTM Committee Approves Standard to test for glycols in motor oil.

ASTM International standard D7922, Test Method for Determination of Glycol for In-Service Engine Oils by Gas Chromatography, is intended for use by companies that use large, industrial engines. Test method describes analysis for ethylene glycol that looks for single component in complex matrix of engine oil. Dirty used oil sample is directly reacted with chemical that will derivatize ethylene glycol to form another compound: ethylene glycol phenylboronate (EGPBA). Read More

NASA's green aviation project is one step closer to developing technology that could make future airliners quieter and more fuel-efficient with successful flight test of wing surface that can change shape in flight. ASTM Standard addresses drying behavior of concrete mixtures.

With ASTM C1792 standard, ready-mix concrete producers and engineers will be able to characterize how hardened concrete mixtures dry. Test will provide information on mass loss versus time (drying) behavior of initially saturated concrete specimen exposed to one-dimensional drying in controlled temperature and relative humidity environment. ASTM Standard helps identify multiple outliers in data set.

ASTM D7915, Practice for Application of Generalized Extreme Studentized Deviate (GESD) Technique to Simultaneously Identify Multiple Outliers in a Data Set, features methodology requiring only approximation of total number of outliers to detect. According to ASTM member Alex Lau, practical applications of this standard include “prescreening of interlaboratory study data, where there is a large volume of raw data to be screened for outliers.” Read More

PTDA elected its 2015 Board of Directors and Manufacturer Council at PTDA Industry Summit. Ajay Bajaj, president of Rotator Products Limited, will become PTDA’s president. He has been active in PTDA since 2002, serving as a member of several task forces and 4 committees. Cliff Bannon, Eastern sales manager of Isostatic Industries Inc, will assume duties of PTDA Manufacturer Council chair in 2015. Proposed standard ASTM WK47030 will cover evaluation of concrete slab system that is intended to be covered with resilient flooring. It features review of concrete floor slab design and construction documents to ensure compatibility with specified floor covering and adhesive manufacturers' requirements. Depending on when review required by ASTM WK47030 is conducted, results could affect design criteria before construction, eliminating conflicts that would cause problems later. Read More
