BIO Summit highlights importance of care and use of animals.

Scheduled for September 16–18, Livestock Biotech Summit will feature session titled "Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Biomedical Applications” which will include discussions on latest knowledge impacting care and use of livestock animals in research settings. During "Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Food Production" session, panelists will discuss what researchers, farmers, and organizations are doing to answer consumer questions about methods used to raise their food. Solar Workshop addresses planning, regulating, and permitting.

As part of the Solar Outreach Partnership, the Centralina Council of Governments is hosting a free solar energy workshop, Wednesday, July 30, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Presenters will offer suggestions on how to improve and streamline the permitting process in ways that benefit the permitting authority, as well as solar installers and their customers. U.S. Team Takes Silver in 2014 International Rocketry Challenge.

July 22, 2014

Students from Creekview High School (Canton, GA) took silver medals in seventh annual International Rocketry Challenge at Farnborough International Air Show. Sponsored by Raytheon, U.S. team won second place. Rockets had to reach 825 ft during 48–50 sec flight window, and payload of 2 raw hen eggs had to return to ground undamaged using 2 identical parachutes. Team posted top flight score of 9.88 and was 9 ft short of target altitude. Also, students were judged on rocket design presentation. Read More

Kevin J. Cosgriff to lead NEMA.

As of August 4, Kevin J. Cosgriff will take office as president and CEO of NEMA. Cosgriff, a former vice admiral in the U.S. Navy, comes to NEMA after serving as Senior VP of International Business and Government for Textron Systems Corporation, a position he held from 2010 to 2013. According to NEMA Board of Governors Chairman Chris Curtis, Cosgriff is a proven leader with a command of policy issues important to NEMA members and has great business acumen for the manufacturing environment. EPA to fund 21 small businesses.

July 18, 2014

Through Small Business Innovation Research program, EPA is providing $2 million in funds to 21 small businesses in 15 states to develop and commercialize innovative, sustainable technologies that address current environmental issues. In Phase I, small businesses can receive up to $100,000 for "proof of concept" of their technology, and successful Phase I companies can apply to develop and commercialize their technology with Phase II funding totaling up to $300,000. NEMA reacts to passage of energy and water funding bill.

July 18, 2014

NEMA commented on House passage of FY2015 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill, which funds DOE. HR 4923 provides $160 million for the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability, which leads research and development activities for transmission, Smart Grid, energy storage, and cybersecurity. Though this amount is an 8.7% increase over FY2014, NEMA was supportive of efforts by Representatives Jerry McNerney (D-CA) and Renee Ellmers (R-NC) to increase OE funding to $180 million. Read More

Biotech Trade Associations form ICBA to increase int'l support.

International confederation of biotechnology trade associations announced ratification of bylaws creating International Council of Biotechnology Associations (ICBA), which will advocate for public policies supporting growth of innovative biotechnology industry worldwide. BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood, elected as ICBA Chairman, said that forming ICBA allows industry to better coordinate, organize, and face these challenging issues globally together. Read More

EPA proposes to replace and reduce harmful greenhouse gases.

July 16, 2014

EPA is proposing to prohibit use of certain chemicals that significantly contribute to climate change where safer, more climate-friendly alternatives exist. Proposed action would change status of certain high-global warming potential HFCs that were previously listed as acceptable under SNAP Program to be unacceptable in specific end-uses. It is estimated to reduce greenhouse gases by up to 42 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2020. Read More

FAA Receives Unleaded Fuels Proposals in support of PAFI.

July 16, 2014

FAA received 10 replacement fuel proposals from producers Afton Chemical Company, Avgas LLC, Shell, and Swift Fuels as well as consortium of BP, TOTAL, and Hjelmco for further evaluation in Piston Aviation Fuels Initiative (PAFI), which aims to help general aviation industry transition to unleaded aviation gasoline. FAA will assess viability of candidate fuels to determine for participation in first phase of laboratory testing at William J. Hughes Technical Center. Read More

Brazil Uses EPRI Training Simulator during 2014 World Cup.

Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (ONS), national operator of Brazilian electric system, uses EPRI's Operator Training Simulator (OTS) to ensure operators are prepared to respond to situations that might disrupt power to World Cup venues as well as broader Brazilian population. ONS has deployed the Operator Training Simulator at its national control center and 4 regional control centers. Several transmission control centers across country also have accessed OTS remotely. NEMA QER Recommendations aim to improve electrical grid.

NEMA submitted 14 recommendations for consideration as part of Quadrennial Energy Review (QER) to improve grid reliability, efficiency, and security to meet America’s current and future energy needs. NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis called these suggestions "the product of deliberations by some of the nation’s leading electrical manufacturers and innovators" and noted that solutions and technologies are available "today to achieve a reliable, efficient, and secure electric grid."

ASABE revises adoption of ISO 80 mm Ball Hitch Standard.

ANSI/ASABE AD24347:2005, Agricultural vehicles — Mechanical connections between towed and towing vehicles — Dimensions of ball-type coupling device, 80 mm, replaces the previous adoption, which was without deviations, with a document that is similar but has specific technical deviations in the reference section of the ISO document. Users of ANSI/ASABE AD24347:2005 are to deviate from ISO 24347 by replacing referenced ISO standards with equivalent ASABE national adoptions as referenced. Read More

EPA to hold fifth annual Energy Star Battle of the Buildings.

During 2014 Energy Star Battle of the Buildings: Team Challenge, more than 5,500 buildings nationwide are going head-to-head to reduce their energy use. In support of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan, which calls for businesses to cut in half the amount of energy they waste over the next 20 years, competition specifically targets wasted energy in commercial buildings, and will motivate businesses to improve energy efficiency, reduce harmful carbon pollution, and save money. Agricultural Drawbar Jacks Standard has been adopted by ASABE.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) announced adoption of ASABE/ISO 12140:2013, Agricultural machinery — Agricultural trailers and trailed equipment — Drawbar jacks, as well as withdrawal of corresponding standard ASAE S485.3, Implement Mounted, Screw-Type Jacks, on which the ISO 12140:2013 is based.
