BIO announces plenary session topics for Pacific Rim Summit.

BIO announced that plenary speakers for 2010 Pacific Rim Summit on Industrial Biotech and Bioenergy will discuss future drop-in transportation and aviation biofuels, potential advances in algae and marine biotechnology, and efforts to commercialize renewable chemicals. STEM Education Partnership enhanced via quality teachers.

In 2010, 237 Gateway Academies, created in partnership between SME Education Foundation and Project Lead The Way (PLTW), were held and reached over 4,800 students in 34 states. Glen H. Pearson, SME Education Foundation president, said working with PLTW strengthened science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum. PLTW-trained teachers have been able to encourage students to consider STEM-based careers, fostering favorable global economic competition. Read More

ASTM announces publication on bearing steel technologies.

Available from ASTM International, STP 1524, Bearing Steel Technologies, 8th Volume includes 13 international peer-reviewed papers and recent research from bearing steelmakers, rolling bearing producers, and research and development institutes. Some topics include material and heat treatment design considerations, microstructure behavior in rolling contact, fatigue life prediction methodologies, and corrosion-resistant steel, and hydrogen effects in bearing steels. IEEE Homeland Security Conference to address counterfeiting.

To take place on November 8-10 in Waltham, MA, 2010 IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security will cover detection and prevention of counterfeiting. Vivek Pathak, in his paper "Preventing Counterfeiting through Authenticated Product Labels," will discuss how cryptography-based counterfeit detection method identifies counterfeit products and can pinpoint their source in supply chain. EPA's Clean Air Act passes the 40 year mark.

As part of activities commemorating U.S. EPA's 40th anniversary, agency is highlighting progress made under 40 years of the Clean Air Act at conference in Washington, D.C. From 1990 through 2008, emissions of 6 common pollutants are down 41%, while gross domestic product has grown 64%. Lead levels in the air are 92% lower than in 1980, and according to preliminary EPA analysis, in 2010, CAA fine particles and ozone programs will prevent more than 160,000 premature deaths. ANSI, ANAB/ACLASS provide joint ENERGY STAR® accreditation.

ANSI and ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB/ACLASS) have launched joint program to provide dual accreditation from each organization's ENERGY STAR accreditation program. While ANAB/ACLASS program accredits to ENERGY STAR's computer specification test methods requirement, ANSI's program assesses applicant certification bodies against requirements in EPA's Conditions and Criteria for Recognition of Certification Bodies for ENERGY STAR Program; ISO/IEC Guide 65; and IAF-GD 5-2006. Developed by Subcommittee F04.25 on Spinal Devices, ASTM F2790, Practice for Static and Dynamic Characterization of Motion Preserving Lumbar Total Facet Prostheses could be applied to all motion-preserving devices for posterior of spine, not just total facet prostheses. ASTM International Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials, and Applications approved ASTM D7539, Practice for Using a Test Chamber for Humidity Conditioning of Test Panels of Pavement Marking Paints. Under jurisdiction of Subcommittee D01.44 on Traffic Coatings, this standard covers test chamber used by transportation departments and similar agencies to specify and test dry speed of waterborne pavement marking paints at elevated relative humidity. Manufacturing Technology Consumption up 58.9% in 2010.

According to the American Machine Tool Distributors' Association and AMT, July U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $266.08 million. This total was up 10.1% from June and up 72.6% from total of $154.13 million reported for July 2009. With year-to-date total of $1,473.79 million, 2010 is up 58.9% compared with 2009. August issue of GAWDA Edge features article entitled "Welding Rodeo Round-Up," which explains how one distributor shaped nation's original Welding Rodeo. Don Anderson, welding instructor at Bellingham Technical College, came up with idea for 2-day welding sculpture competition featuring 80 professional and amateur welders. FAA announces additional Recovery Act airport grants.

FAA announced that 5 additional airport projects have been selected for funding, paid for with $9 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. According to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, earlier ARRA projects came in under budget and these savings can now be applied to other projects. Projects will take place at Yeager Airport, MBS International Airport, Killeen Skylark Field, Burlington International Airport, and Avi Suquilla Airport. Read More

Data requested of 9 natural gas service companies is integral to scientific study, underway by EPA, that aims to determine whether hydraulic fracturing has any impact on drinking water and public health of Americans living in vicinity of hydraulic fracturing wells.
