NREL supports Wind for Schools project.

NREL's Wind for School project has installed 42 Southwest Windpower SkyStream 3.7 turbines so far, with goal of 5 new turbines each year for the 11 states already part of program. Eventually, 35 states are expected to participate. In addition to providing energy to help power schools, turbines help inspire next-generation scientists and engineers. Department of Energy envisions U.S. getting as much as 20% of its electricity from wind power by 2030, which would provide 500,000 wind-related jobs. Read More

Hydraulic Institute updates seal-less pump standards.

Hydraulic Institute published ANSI/HI 5.1-5.6-2010 Sealless Rotodynamic Pumps standard, which includes part names and definitions, magnetic temperature limits and motor insulation temperature limits, magnetic drive pumps mounting specifications, monitoring device information, and testing. HI also updated ANSI/HI 4.1-4.6-2010 Seal-less, Magnetically Driven Rotary Pumps standard, which covers types and nomenclature, definitions, design and applications, installation, operation, and maintenance. SAE International to host Powertrain Electric Motors Symposium.

On Dec. 1, SAE International will host 2010 Powertrain Electric Motor Symposium for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles. Since OEMs are starting to design, develop, and manufacture their own traction motors, panel will discuss how they will need to start new supplier relationships for products they have not purchased before. Event will also cover technical issues, market growth projections, and requirements and cost structures for permanent magnet motors, induction motors, and switch reluctance motors. Read More

AAMA Voluntary Specifications address organic coating requirements.

November 24, 2010

AAMA published three revised voluntary specifications: AAMA 623-10, 624-10, and 625-10, which respectively address performance requirements and test procedures for nominal-, high-, and superior-performance organic coatings on fiber reinforced thermoset profiles. Applicable to coatings used for windows, doors and similar products, standards ensure level of performance in terms of film integrity, exterior durability, and general appearance over extended periods of time. NASA tests liquid-fuel engine for commercial space vehicle.

November 24, 2010

NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center test fired liquid-fuel AJ26 engine that will power first stage of Taurus II space launch vehicle. Conducted by Orbital, Aerojet, and Stennis engineers, 10 sec test served as short-duration readiness firing to verify engine start and shutdown sequences, E-1 test stand operations, and ground-test engine controls. ASABE revises standard on mechanically laminated columns.

ANSI/ASAE EP559.1, Design Requirements and Bending Properties for Mechanically Laminated Wood Assemblies, includes updates to reflect current practices used for wood preservation, fastener substrates and coatings, laminate strength and stiffness; both allowable stress design, and load and resistance factor design formats; and lateral torsional blocking. Revision also covers updates to terminology as well as symbol consistency with other ASABE standards. Read More

FAA dedicates Recovery Act-funded fire station at LAX.

FAA dedicated state-of-the-art fire station at Los Angeles International Airport funded by nearly $11 million from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. At 27,500 sq-ft, station is twice as big as the old facility, and better accommodates size, volume, and nature of today's emergency response equipment. Station has 7 bays to house and maintain fire rescue vehicles and also provides living, training, and administration areas for 14 firefighters. Read More

AMCA approves revisions for Certified Ratings Program.

AMCA approved 2010 revisions for AMCA Publication 511 titled Certified Ratings Program - Product Rating Manual for Air Control Devices, which dictates proper presentation of data and other required technical procedures for certification of air control devices. Manual should be used in conjunction with current edition of AMCA Publication 11. Products within scope of program include air control devices used in general ventilation and air conditioning systems. Read More

IPC submits comments to SEC on conflict metals.

IPC submitted comments to U.S. SEC regarding Section 1502 of Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, Public Law 111-203, on trade of conflict minerals. IPC supports goal of Section 1502, which is to prevent human rights atrocities occurring in Democratic Republic of the Congo. In comments, IPC outlined complexities for electronics manufacturers and encouraged SEC to allow maximum time for industry to implement rules and to develop supply-chain-based due diligence processes. PTDA Business Index reveals positive outlook for 2011.

According to third quarter Quarterly Business Index, PTDA members are projecting 10% growth on top of 14% average growth expectation for 2010. Third quarter respondents experienced expansion, although at reduced rated compared to second quarter. Overall reading for third quarter was 74.6, compared to 77.0 in second quarter. Comparative review of distributor and manufacturer results show manufacturing expanded faster than distribution, with respective readings of 76.6 and 71.2. Read More

ASABE to update agricultural drawbar jacks standard.

ASABE announces approval by ISO of ISO New Work Item Proposal to update and improve ISO 12140:1998, which specifies requirements for performance and fitting of original or replacement jacks for adjusting height of drawbars of agricultural trailers and trailed equipment. Standard also includes recommendations for designers and gives requirements for testing and marking jacks. Project team will work to enhance, define, clarify, and update performance criteria within standard. Read More

As it considers steps to reduce lead (Pb)-based paint dust during renovation, repair, and painting of building exteriors, US EPA invites small businesses to participate as consultants for Small Business Advocacy Review panel. Panel will ask selected group of small entity representatives to provide advice and recommendations on behalf of their company, community, or organization to relay impacts of proposed rule on small entities involved in renovation, repair, and painting. EPA finalizes rules to foster safe carbon storage technology.

U.S. EPA finalized two rules related to the capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide. CCS technology allows carbon dioxide to be captured at stationary sources such as power plants and large industrial operations and injected underground for long-term storage in a process called geologic sequestration. Rules aim to protect drinking water and to track amount of carbon dioxide that is sequestered from facilities that carry out geologic sequestration. Read More

In FMA's Fabrinomics economic update newsletter, FMA economic analyst Dr. Chris Kuehl asserts there exists a mood of optimism in small business community. He cites National Federation of Small Business Optimism Index, which rose by 2.7 points and currently rests at 91.7. Kuehl stresses 3 factors for recovery: return of consumer demand, access to capital for businesses to meet expanded need, and semi-predictable environment for business owners to plan how to grow their businesses. RMA Vehicle Survey Findings stress need to check tire treads.

November 23, 2010

Sponsored by RMA, tire industry survey showed that nearly 11% of 6,300 vehicles had at least one bald tire, 55% of vehicles had at least one under-inflated tire, and that just 17% of vehicles had 4 properly inflated tires. RMA suggests checking tire tread depth using penny test, and by checking for wear bars that appear even with outside of tread, to know when to replace tires. Organization also recommends that tire inflation pressure be checked every month and before long trips. Read More

IREC Releases First Model Program Rules for Community Renewables.

Based on best practices, IREC's Model Program Rules for Community Renewables facilitate co-investment in local renewable power facilities. Rules consider basic issues, such as renewable system size, interconnection, eligibility, allocation of benefits, and net metering of system production.
