ASTM Fellow Receives Award for work on roofing standards.

Justin Henshell of Henshell and Buccellato Consulting Architects in NJ has been presented with William C. Cullen Award for his contributions to international standards for roofing and waterproofing. Henshell, who joined the organization in 1976, remains active member of both Committee D08 and Committee C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units. He specializes in moisture-related issues in building enclosures, including roofing, waterproofing, and masonry walls. Read More

LSO Workshop offers solutions to real-world safety issues.

Held July 27-29, 2010 and hosted by Ken Barat, 6th Annual LSO Workshop provided presentations on topics not found in standard laser safety training and solutions to real-world safety issues. Event included opening presentation by Professor Charles Townes; panel discussions, which allowed attendees to raise questions and examine best practices; mini-workshop sessions on laser hazard software; and opportunities for networking, including tour of the Advanced Light Source. EPA and DOT propose new fuel economy labels.

U.S. DOT and U.S. EPA are jointly proposing changes to fuel economy labels consumers see on window of new vehicles in dealer showrooms. One label features letter grade to communicate vehicle's overall fuel economy and greenhouse gas emission performance. Second proposed label retains current label's focus on MPG and annual fuel costs, while adding comparison information on fuel economy and emissions. Both include information on fuel consumption, tailpipe CO2 emissions, and smog-related emissions. Read More

FAA celebrates completion of SFO Recovery Act projects.

FAA marked completion of $14.5 million in runway projects funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 that will ensure continued safety for flights at San Francisco International Airport. In addition to leveling out 2 runways that tend to settle over time because of ground conditions, work included paving both runways with asphalt concrete, reconstructing sections of runways, upgrading lighting systems with energy-efficient LED lighting, and re-painting runway markings. John R. Logar receives Peter D. Hedgecock Award.

ASTM International Committee E10 on Nuclear Technology and Applications has presented John R. Logar with Peter D. Hedgecock Award for his outstanding contributions to development of radiation processing standards. Logar is manager of Sterilization, Science and Technology at Ethicon Inc., a Johnson and Johnson company, in Somerville, N.J. Logar's professional work focuses on sterilization of medical devices, which includes radiation processing and dosimetry. Read More

IPC releases PCB industry results for July 2010.

According to IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were up 23.9% while bookings increased 34.4% in July 2010 from July 2009. Flexible circuit shipments in July 2010 were up 38.2%, and bookings were up 28.8% compared to July 2009. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments in July 2010 increased 25.2% from July 2009, as orders booked increased 33.9% from July 2009. Combined industry book-to-bill ratio in July 2010 was 1.11. Read More

ASA Members continue with small growth in July.

For third consecutive month, ASA members reported 3.3% improvement in per-workday revenues during month of July in 2010 compared to July 2009. Year-to-date values for plumbing, heating and pipe, valve, and fitting distributors are still behind last year by 0.2% and 17.4% compared to 2008. As there was one less workday in July and year-to-date 2010 than in 2009, raw monthly revenues for industry members were down 1.5% for month, 1.0% year-to-date, and 17.4% compared to 2 years ago. FDA to consider genetically engineered salmon.

U.S. FDA announced that it will convene its Veterinary Medicine Advisory Committee to consider salmon that has been genetically engineered to reach its market weight in half the time of conventionally raised salmon. At meeting, Committee will hear from independent experts about product's safety, effectiveness, and environmental benefits. It will also collect public testimony and examine 14 years of scientific evidence about salmon before deciding whether or not to recommend regulatory approval. Read More

Industrial Controls Demand maintains gain in second quarter.

NEMA's Primary Industrial Controls Index increased 6.4% in second quarter of 2010 versus first quarter and registered 4 consecutive quarter-to-quarter increases. Currently 24.8% above its level last year, this gain represents largest since late 1992. Primary Industrial Controls and Adjustable Speed Drives Index posted 1.7% quarter-to-quarter rate of growth during 2010Q2 and increased nearly 24% on year-over-year basis. Read More

ASME renewed Precision Custom Components' certification to manufacture pressure vessels. Specifically under Section VIII of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Divisions 1, 2, and 3, they will retain U, U2, U3, and R stamps for another 3 years. PCC is one of 3 domestic and 14 international companies to receive this certification to manufacturer large, 10,000+ psi pressure vessels.
