ASHRAE Proposals approved by International Code Council.

International building codes will incorporate requirements from HVAC inspection and maintenance standard 180-2008 (ANSI/ASHRAE/ACCA) and match requirements from Standard 90.1 under several proposals recently approved by ICC membership. Approved proposed changes regarding ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2010 include adding requirements for areas under skylights, modifying equipment efficiency requirements for heat rejection/transfer equipment, and modifying piping insulation requirements. MEPs Agree to Drop Priority Substances due to IPC lobbying.

November 12, 2010

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) agreed to drop demands for list of priority substances for new restrictions under RoHS Directive. Pleased by this news, IPC President Dennis McGuirk said that "European lawmakers have acknowledged calls by IPC and others for a scientifically based Directive." MEPs also dropped demand for revised RoHS Directive to contain ban on nanosilver in favor of future priority review. Also, compromise was reached on open-scope issue. Read More

A&WMA calls for abstracts for annual conference/exhibition.

A&WMA is accepting abstracts for its 104th Annual Conference & Exhibition (ACE) until Friday, December 3, 2011. Including undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral student paper and poster submissions, papers are being sought in categories of local and regional issues impacting Florida, air and environmental management, resource conservation and waste management, and environmental education and training. Project 2020 prize winner on display at Pack Expo.

Package of the Future competition, a key component of DuPont-sponsored Project 2020: The Consumer Experience, featured Dissolving SoapStix as its grand prize winner. Prototype of winning design, submitted by Bailey Brand Consulting, was on display in The Brand Zone at PACK EXPO International 2010. Nine other creative concepts were included in display, which provided insight into types of packaging consumers might see on retail shelves in 10 years. Read More

SAE and ASTM Partnership allows electronic content distribution.

SAE International can now sell electronic versions of select ASTM International books, in their entirety and as individual chapters, due to newly formed strategic partnership. SAE International Editorial Director Kevin Jost and ASTM International VP of Publications and Marketing John Pace indicated this partnership will benefit customers of both associations. While agreement currently covers 5 titles, more content will be added in the future. Read More

NIST's TIP seeks comments on potential funding areas. .

In two Federal Register notices, Technology Innovation Program of NIST asks for public comments on 6 NIST-prepared white papers outlining potential areas for research grants and, separately, requests detailed suggestions of critical national needs and associated technical needs for future TIP funding competitions. Draft white papers cover topics in 5 areas of critical national need, including water, manufacturing, energy, civil infrastructure, and healthcare. Read More

EPA and Border Patrol to enforce Clean Air Act regarding imports.

U.S. EPA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are collaborating to ensure all imported vehicles and engines comply with Clean Air Act requirements. As primary federal agency responsible for monitoring imports to U.S., CBP has officers identify shipments, with particular focus on companies that have previously violated the Clean Air Act, and put them on hold for inspection. Working closely with special team of CBP officers, EPA investigators inspect vehicles and engines. Read More

Standards support Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

In recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, ANSI takes a look at standards that support lung health. ISO/TR 22305 establishes tolerance for checks of the carbon monoxide yields declared by cigarette manufacturers, while BSR/ASTM D5075-200x standard covers sampling and analysis of nicotine and 3-ethenylpyridine in indoor air for determining secondhand smoke exposure. Additionally, IEC 60601-2-44 Ed. 3.0 b defines basic safety and essential performance of CT scanners. Read More

NIST Researchers/Collaborators awarded 7 patents in past year.

Patents awarded to NIST researchers/collaborators within past year include portable LED-illuminated radiance source; method for reducing hysteresis losses in gadolinium alloys in room-temperature magnetic refrigeration processes; and covalently immobilized fluorinated carboxylic acid stationary phase for LC. Other patents apply to microfluidic flow manipulation device, magneto-optical trap ion source, microfluidics for portable applications, and portable optical neutron detector. Read More

PMMI, American Meat Institute engage in packaging survey.

To identify ways to increase packaging recovery rate, PMMI and American Meat Institute (AMI) announced they will conduct a survey about packaging in meat industry. Results will be compiled and form basis for strategic document to be released in 2011. Through this effort, packaging issues will be prioritized based on practicality as well as potential for positive environmental impact. This initiative marks first major undertaking by AMI and PMMI since their announced partnership. Read More

Hormel accepts 2010 PMT Packaging Line of the Year award.

PMT Magazine presented its 2010 Packaging Line of the Year award to Hormel Foods' Progressive Processing, LLC facility in Dubuque, Iowa, for its HormelĀ® CompleatsĀ® line. Facility uses non-irrigated landscaping; controlled lighting, heating, and cooling; heat- and water-recovery processes; and more than 36% recycled construction materials. Multipond scaling system replaces hand-filling ingredients, while Raque line tracks containers throughout system and can seal 240 microwave meals/min. Read More

Bob Majewski, President and COO of Sumerel Tire Service was elected President, while Eddie Burleson, General Manager of Central Marketing was elected Vice President. American National Standards Institute (ANSI) announced its new Washington, DC headquarters opened its doors at 1899 L Street, NW. Expanded conference room facilities and technological upgrades enable ANSI to increase its meeting capabilities as well as its educational programming. ANSI highlights current alternative energy initiatives.

Scientists at Helios project are working to mimic photosynthesis, with goal of harnessing sun's energy to replace fossil fuels, and turn CO2 into ethanol or another alcohol for use in cars. It is joint initiative between University of California, Berkeley, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, part of ANSI member U.S. DoE. ANSI is also convening standards-needs assessment workshop in 2011 to address electric vehicles, while IEC General Meeting in October covered various energy issues. Read More

EPA sets requirements for greenhouse gas reporting.

EPA has finalized greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting requirements for petroleum and natural gas industries as part of Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program. Data collected will help identify cost effective ways to minimize loss of methane, which is potent GHG and component of natural gas. Beginning in 2011, petroleum and natural gas facilities that emit more than 25,000 metric tons of CO2/yr must monitor and report emissions to EPA. ASABE withdraws tractor auxiliary PTO driveline standard.

November 10, 2010

ASABE has withdrawn standard ASAE S333.2, Agricultural Tractor Auxiliary Power Take-Off Drives since it is no longer applicable to modern agricultural and compact utility tractors and machinery, which operate at 2,000 rpm. Used in its place is ASAE S431.1, 2000-RPM Front and Mid PTO for Lawn and Garden Ride-on Tractors. Copies of withdrawn S333.2 standard are still available through ASABE for historical reference. SAE International's 2010 Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress, led by Oshkosh Corporation, was held October 5-6 at Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, IL. It featured interactive panel discussions and technical sessions, as well as National Research Council Report: Assessment of Fuel Economy Technologies for Medium and Heavy Duty Vehicles, presented by Dr. Andrew Brown, Jr. of Delphi Corp. PMI meets with Congressional staff on 2 key issues.

During its 2nd-annual Legislative Advocacy Day, PMI met with key staff on Capitol Hill from 15 states to discuss importance of plumbing manufacturing industry and urge bipartisan support of passage of The Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act and Clean Energy Jobs and Oil Company Accountability Act of 2010, which includes HomeStar/WaterSense consumer rebate provisions.
