ASTM Committee approves standard for developing steel sheets.

In quest for lighter, more crash-resistant and fuel-efficient vehicles, automobile and steel industries are developing steel sheets that have higher alloy content, and thus more complex hardening mechanisms, than sheets currently being used. Sheets are covered by new ASTM International standard, ASTM A1079, Specification for Steel Sheet, Complex Phase, Dual Phase, and Transformation-Induced Plasticity, Zinc-Coated or Zinc-Iron Alloy-Coated by the Hot-Dip Process. NTSB Seeks Comments on final rules for appeals procedures.

October 18, 2012

NTSB issued set of rules addressing review of aviation enforcement cases. Included in new final rule and interim final rule, changes allow appeals to federal district court, apply federal rules of evidence and civil procedure to NTSB proceedings, and allow parties to move to dismiss complaint if FAA fails to disclose its enforcement investigative report. Although interim final rule is effective immediately, NTSB requests public comment concerning changes by December 17. Researchers say spider's silk can be used to manipulate light.

Research shows that natural silk could be an eco-friendly alternative to traditional ways of manipulating light. During OSA Annual Meeting, Frontiers in Optics 2012, biomedical engineer Fiorenzo Omenetto of Tufts University will discuss use of silk's optical properties for implantable sensors and other biology-technology interfaces. Physicist Nolwenn Huby at CNRS Institut de Physiques de Rennes in France will talk about use of natural spider silk to guide light through photonic chips. Read More

NASA, IHMC Develop Robotic Exoskeleton for use in space, on Earth.

NASA and The Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) of Pensacola, FL have jointly developed X1 robotic exoskeleton. Derived from NASA's Robonaut 2 project, X1 consists of 57 lb robot that humans could wear over their bodies to assist or inhibit leg joint movement. In inhibit mode, device would be used in space as exercise machine. On Earth, robot could be used to help individuals walk for first time. Currently, X1 is in R/D phase. Read More

EPA awards $30 million for clean diesel projects.

U.S. EPA is awarding $30 million for clean diesel projects as part of its ongoing campaign to reduce harmful diesel exhaust that can lead to asthma attacks and premature deaths. Diesel Emission Reduction Program, also known as DERA, is designed to replace, retrofit, or repower 11 million older diesel-powered engines that continue to emit high levels of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, including those found in marine vessels, locomotives, trucks, and buses. Test Standard addresses controlled volume metering pumps.

Hydraulic Institute has released ANSI/HI 7.6 - 2012 Controlled-Volume Metering Pumps for Test standard for testing of positive displacement reciprocating controlled-volume metering pumps. Standard provides uniform procedures for performance testing and for recording of test results. It covers functional testing of production units, rate of flow and mechanical integrity at speed and pressure specified, and verification of performance to manufacturer's specifications. EPA awards $1.2 million to improve indoor air quality.

October 18, 2012

EPA will provide combined $1.2 million in funding to 32 state and local governments, tribes, and non-profit organizations for IAQ projects, which will better protect health of Americans in classrooms, communities, and homes. Education projects, training, and outreach efforts will help reduce environmental health risks of indoor air contaminants such as asthma triggers. Projects will also increase number of homes tested and mitigated for radon as well as those built with radon-resistant features. Read More

PTDA announced dates and locations for its 2013 events. These include University of Industrial Distribution (March 10–13) in Indianapolis, IN; Spring Leaders Conference/Leadership Development Conference (March 21–23) in San Antonio, TX; Hannover Fair (April 8–12) in Hannover, Germany; PTDA Canadian Conference (June 6–8) in Toronto, Ontario; EPTDA Convention (Sept 18–20) in Venice, Italy; and PTDA Industry Summit (Oct 3–5) in Palm Desert, CA. Events are also scheduled for 2014 and 2015. Read More
