Developed in cooperation with Mid-Atlantic Advisory Council, partner schools, and industry professionals, Introduction to Mechanical Components Certificate test is based on an industry recognized skill standard for packaging-related industrial maintenance and mechatronics. With it, the industry and its educational outlets can measure student and personnel knowledge against nationally recognized standard. Blue Ribbon at PAC Green Den goes to plastic processing.

PAC Green Den - Fast Track to Sustainable Innovation competition was conducted by The Packaging Association (PAC) November 2 at PACK EXPO International 2010. Top prize winners were MicroGreen Polymers' InCycle method for reducing cost of recycled plastics by adding gas that expands length and width of solid polymer sheets, and EcoLogic's EcoPure plastic additive that accelerates decomposition. CONEXPO Russia at CTT 2011 sees strong exhibit space sales.

CONEXPO Russia at CTT 2011, to be held May 31 through June 4 in Moscow, is experiencing exhibit space sales which exceed those of last year's show. Indoor space sales have doubled, while outdoor space has surpassed 2010 show to the point of near capacity. While available, exhibit applications are being accepted on first come, first served basis. Financial Services Sector signs cybersecurity research agreement.

Through memorandum of understanding signed on Dec. 6, 2010, NIST, the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, and the Financial Services Sector Coordinating Council agreed to work together to speed the application of research into practice for better cybersecurity for the critically important financial services sector. Outputs of this collaborative research are also expected to be applicable to health care and Smart Grid cybersecurity needs. Read More

ODVA to publish new specifications for CIP networks.

ODVA announced that it will be publishing new editions of specifications for ODVA networks, updating EtherNet/IP(TM), DeviceNet(TM), CompoNet(TM), and ControlNet(TM) technologies, as well as CIP Safety(TM) extension to EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet networks. Of the 44 specific enhancements to these technologies, ODVA's addition of QuickConnect(TM) functionality and IP Address Conflict Detection to The EtherNet/IP Specification will be of significant interest to end users. NVLAP recognized by ENERGY STAR® as accrediting body.

ENERGY STARĀ®, a program of EPA and Department of Energy to promote energy efficiency, has recognized NIST's National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program as an accrediting body. This recognition enables NVLAP to accredit independent labs as having the technical capability necessary to test products to determine whether they meet ENERGY STAR requirements. NVLAP accreditation will be a necessary first step for a laboratory's test data to be accepted under enhanced ENERGY STAR program. Read More

T5/T8/T12 Lamp Q3 Shipment Report shows general increase.

December 9, 2010

NEMA shipment indexes for linear fluorescent T5, T8, and T12 lamps increased during 2010 Q3. While T5 lamps showed largest rate of growth at 6.6%, T8s and T12s registered respective gains of 0.6% and 0.1. Growing 48.7% from 1 year ago, T5 index has reached 163.4. Also, year-over-year increase in T8 shipments of 6.8% nudged index to 102.7, while 70.1 index value for T12 lamps represented decline of 8.8%. Despite annual decline, share of T12 lamps increased over 4 percentage points during Q3. Read More

Federal Buildings Personnel Training Act passes Congress.

U.S. House of Representatives has passed S 3250 Federal Buildings Personnel Training Act of 2010, which includes provisions backed by NEMA. S 3250 instructs General Services Administration to develop core competencies for federal building managers to ensure that buildings are safely maintained and operated at maximum performance levels. Act will help increase energy efficiency of federal government, as mandated through executive order by President Obama on Oct 5, 2009. Read More

Metal Halide Lamp Shipments remain solid during 2010 Q3.

December 9, 2010

Shipments of metal halide high intensity discharge (HID) lamps grew 4.6% to 87.1 during 2010 Q3, and index showed year-over-year growth of 5.7%. Conversely, sodium vapor HID lamp shipments fell 10.4% during quarter to 82.1. Mercury vapor lamps carved out 5.4% share of HID lamp market, showing 1.3% increase over previous quarter. Market shares for metal halide lamps rose to 63.3% of total shipments while that of sodium vapor lamps contracted to 31.3%. Read More

NAM Official comments on proposed tax relief compromise.

Agreement between President Obama and Congressional Republicans on tax relief includes provisions such as tax relief for small businesses, 100% expensing, estate tax reform, preferential tax rates for investment income, and R&D tax credit. In response, NAM's John Engler said R&D credit and other business extenders are key to manufacturers' competitiveness and ability to create jobs. Engler also said 100% expensing provision will encourage investment and create demand for machinery and equipment. Read More

ASTM Subcommittee ponders steam cleaning product test methods.

ASTM subcommittee F11.40 on Steam Products, part of ASTM International Committee F11 on Vacuum Cleaners, will be developing test methods to measure performance and durability of hard surface cleaning products that employ steam. As F11.40 Chairman, Kenneth M. Lee expressed desire to "draw manufacturers and general interest groups together under the ASTM consensus forum to develop fair and unbiased standards for evaluating steam cleaning products." Voluntary Standards cover clothing chemical/impact performance.

ANSI member and accredited standards developer International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) released ANSI/ISEA 103-2010, which addresses protective apparel for workers who come into contact with chemicals. Specifically, it establishes performance, labeling, and certification requirements. New from ASTM International, ASTM F1952-10 addresses impact protection as well as performance criteria for chin bars on full-face requirements for downhill mountain bike helmets. Read More
