Baldrige needs the best of the best as examiners.

The Baldrige Performance Excellence Program is seeking exceptional individuals to serve on 2011 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Board consists of more than 500 volunteers, including 12 judges and about 60 senior examiners representing many industries and sectors. Examiners evaluate applications for the Award and prepare feedback reports to applicants that cite strengths and opportunities for improvement. Read More

NASA Presentations at AGU meeting to include hot cities, ice volcanoes.

NASA researchers will present findings on Earth and space science topics at 2010 fall meeting of American Geophysical Union, which takes place December 13-17 in San Francisco, CA. Specifically, media briefings during meeting will feature topics such as results concerning health impacts of urban heat islands, search for ice volcanoes on one of Saturn's moons, observations of solar eruptions, and earthquake risk in southern CA. President Obama presents steps to export control modernization.

President Obama presented series of initiatives at meeting of President's Export Council chaired by W. James McNerney, Jr. of The Boeing Company to speed progress of export control modernization. They included launch of process to revise U.S. Munitions List and Commerce Control List, along with results of first attempt at revising export controls on military vehicles, and proposals to eliminate commerce licensing requirements for low sensitivity, dual-use exports to close partners and allies. States use technology to cut winter costs.

To maintain high level of service without additional financial resources this winter, many states have turned to new technology and environmentally sensitive solutions. Utah DOT installed 17 HomeView Technologies® road condition monitoring cameras at remote locations, while Colorado DOT has deployed 222 snowplows equipped with Maintenance Decision Support System. Tennessee DOT will use non-corrosive, environmentally friendly substance called "Magic Salt" to help melt ice and snow. Read More

ASTM Testing Programs compare laboratory performance.

Sponsored by ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, Proficiency Testing Programs provide laboratories with statistical quality assurance tool, enabling them to compare their performance in use of ASTM methods against other laboratories. Users receive samples for each test cycle, data report forms, and test instructions. Lab then performs tests within their facility using specified ASTM methods cited in program, submits test data to ASTM, and receives final summary reports. Read More

NASA selects small business research and tech projects.

NASA is negotiating contracts with 350 small businesses that had best proposals to address critical research and technology needs for agency programs and projects. Proposals are part of NASA's Small Business Innovation Research Program and Small Business Technology Transfer program. Research areas among selected proposals include methodologies for predicting effects of aeroelasticity; advanced photovoltaic systems; and measurements of atmospheric parameters and surface topography of planets. National Institute of Standards and Technology's American Recovery and Reinvestment (NIST-ARRA) Act Measurement Science and Engineering Fellowship Program announced its third round of applications for undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, and senior research positions. MESA's European Conference has been deemed a success.

MESA International's European Plant-to-Enterprise conference, which took place in D├╝sseldorf, Germany from November 9-10, explored theme of Unlocking your Operations Potential and attracted 120 attendees from 17 countries. This event saw elections for 2010 MESA EMEA Board of Directors as well as MESA Awards announcements. Of those participating, approximately 40% were manufacturers/producers. PAC Green Den - Fast Track to Sustainable Innovation competition was conducted by The Packaging Association (PAC) November 2 at PACK EXPO International 2010. Top prize winners were MicroGreen Polymers' InCycle method for reducing cost of recycled plastics by adding gas that expands length and width of solid polymer sheets, and EcoLogic's EcoPure plastic additive that accelerates decomposition. Financial Services Sector signs cybersecurity research agreement.

Through memorandum of understanding signed on Dec. 6, 2010, NIST, the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, and the Financial Services Sector Coordinating Council agreed to work together to speed the application of research into practice for better cybersecurity for the critically important financial services sector. Outputs of this collaborative research are also expected to be applicable to health care and Smart Grid cybersecurity needs. Read More
