EPA Releases Reports on dioxin emitted during BP spill.

US EPA released 2 reports concerning dioxins emitted during controlled burns of oil during Deepwater Horizon BP spill. Summarizing EPA sampling effort, first report indicates dioxins were created from burning of oil on ocean water but at levels similar to emissions from residential woodstoves and forest fires. Second report indicates increased cancer risk due to exposure to dioxin release was less than 1 in 1,000,000. Read More

WFD Mandate for Aging Aircraft increases operational safety.

To address aging aircraft issues, FAA finalized rule is designed to protect commercial planes from structural damage as they age. Rule requires aircraft manufacturers and certification applicants to establish number of flight cycles or hours plane can operate and be free from widespread fatigue damage (WFD) without additional inspections for fatigue. Regulation applies to airliners with takeoff weight of 75,000 lb and heavier. It also applies to all future transport designs. Read More

ASHRAE awards NIST grant to study IAQ in retail stores.

Research on improving ventilation and indoor air quality in big box retail stores has begun under project awarded by ASHRAE and funded with $1.5 million grant from NIST as part of 2009 Recovery Act Measurement Science and Engineering Research Grants Program. Building measurements will take place in at least 16 buildings. Half of the buildings will be located in hot and humid climate of central Texas, while the other half in the cold and dry climate of central Pennsylvania. Read More

FAA proposes Safety Management Systems for airlines.

To take U.S. aviation system to next level of safety, FAA has proposed to require Safety Management Systems for most commercial airlines. Systems provide business processes and management tools to examine data from everyday operations, isolate trends that may be precursors to incidents/accidents, and develop and carry out appropriate risk mitigation strategies. They are a formal approach to managing safety through safety policy, safety risk management, safety assurance, and safety promotion. Read More

SME announces certification for green manufacturing specialists.

SME has partnered with Purdue University Technical Assistance Program (TAP) to create Green Manufacturing Specialist Certificate Program. Training program was developed by Purdue TAP, while SME has developed outcome assessment. SME Green Specialist Outcome Assessment can be used to measure knowledge and identify areas to focus training, which can be provided by Purdue or with online tools such as SME Tooling U. Practitioners can then sit for exam to earn certificate. Read More

NEMA honored electroindustry leaders at its annual conference. Honorees included Joel A. Spira of Lutron Electronics, who received 2010 Bernard H. Falk Award for important contribution to industry through technology, marketing, education, and public affairs. Steel Tube Institute announces Product Certification Program.

STINA announced that it is establishing an industry-wide, structural steel tubing Product Certification Program designed to provide assurance that the HSS certified by STINA has been produced to, and tested to meet, ASTM standards. Intertek, a product testing and certification company, is helping to develop criteria and procedures for program and will administer evaluation and product testing required for producing companies to earn certification. Steel Tube Institute establishes product certification program.

November 16, 2010

Steel Tube Institute of North America is establishing HSS Product Certification Program that will assure product specifiers and users that HSS they use in U.S. and Canada meets ASTM standards. To be administered by Intertek, program will be governed by Certification Program Procedural Guide, being developed by STINA's HSS Committee. Companies must undergo quality control audit by Intertek to qualify for HSS certification, and then have facilities evaluated twice annually. Read More

Power Transmission/Motion Control products show increase in sales.

November 15, 2010

According to September 2010 sales data released by PTDA in its Market Outlook Report, sales of power transmission/motion control products by U.S. and Canadian manufacturers grew for second consecutive month. In U.S., year-to-date sales are up 11.9% over same period in 2009. In Canada, sales are 13.0% ahead of 2009. Confidence in market by U.S. manufacturers rose from 4.8 in August to 4.9 on scale of 1-10, while Canadian manufacturers' confidence decreased slightly from 5.2 in August to 5.1. Read More

Fabtech 2010 sees increase in attendees and exhibit space.

On Nov 2-4, some 22,000 people visited Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta for 2010 FABTECH exposition and conference, an increase of 12% from 2006 Atlanta show. Filling nearly 371,000 sq ft of booth space, show included 1,138 exhibitors, an increase of 23% from first show in Atlanta. ASHRAE Proposals approved by International Code Council.

International building codes will incorporate requirements from HVAC inspection and maintenance standard 180-2008 (ANSI/ASHRAE/ACCA) and match requirements from Standard 90.1 under several proposals recently approved by ICC membership. Approved proposed changes regarding ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2010 include adding requirements for areas under skylights, modifying equipment efficiency requirements for heat rejection/transfer equipment, and modifying piping insulation requirements. MEPs Agree to Drop Priority Substances due to IPC lobbying.

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) agreed to drop demands for list of priority substances for new restrictions under RoHS Directive. Pleased by this news, IPC President Dennis McGuirk said that "European lawmakers have acknowledged calls by IPC and others for a scientifically based Directive." MEPs also dropped demand for revised RoHS Directive to contain ban on nanosilver in favor of future priority review. Also, compromise was reached on open-scope issue. Read More
