Paint Waste Disposal Standard helps artists, educators.

ASTM International standard ASTM D7355, Guide for Artists' Paint Waste Disposal in Smaller Commercial or Educational Settings, was developed in response to needs for better environmental practices for art studios. Through ASTM D7355, commercial artists and art teachers in small school systems would have way to deal with waste from artist paints in environmentally friendly manner. ASTM Standard covers caulk and sealant burning characteristics.

Developed by Subcommittee E05.22 on Surface Burning, ASTM E2690, Practice for Specimen Preparation and Mounting of Caulks and Sealants to Assess Surface Burning Characteristics will primarily be used by fire test laboratories, caulk and sealant manufacturers, and code officials. ASTM E2690 resulted from ongoing effort to address materials that are not easily assessed using ASTM E84, Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials. Read More

PTDA selects Ann Arnott for Executive Vice President.

PTDA Board of Directors unanimously selected Ann Arnott, currently PTDA's VP of programs and services, to succeed Mary Sue Lyon as next Executive Vice President of PTDA, effective Jan 1, 2011. Arnott is integral in managing development and execution of PTDA's strategic plan through association's volunteer committees, task forces, and work groups. She also provides oversight for association's events, including the Industry Summit, Canadian Conference, and Leadership Development Conference. Read More

EPA Administrator and NAS President announce NRC study.

December 2, 2010

At event recognizing EPA's 40th anniversary, EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson and National Academy of Sciences President Ralph Cicerone announced that EPA has commissioned National Research Council study that will help agency build upon its expertise in protecting human health and the environment. Agency has asked NRC to develop the Green Book, a groundbreaking effort to incorporate sustainability into the way the agency approaches environmental protection. Read More

North American Electroindustry Business Conditions improve in November.

December 2, 2010

Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions climbed 14.5 points in November, rising to 62.5 from 48 one month ago. Meanwhile, EBCI for North American conditions 6 months in the future rose for third month in a row. Index reached 75, its highest mark since May 2010, and is up a cumulative 21 points since August 2010. According to index, 54% of panelists expect to see better conditions by May 2011, compared to only 4% expecting worse conditions. Read More

Portable Traffic Signal Specification is subject of NEMA committee.

December 2, 2010

NEMA 3-TS Transportation Section formed technical committee that will plan and draft performance standard specification for portable traffic signal systems. NEMA TS 5 will adapt specifications in NEMA TS 2 Traffic Controller Assemblies with NTCIP Requirements and NEMA TS 4 Hardware Standards for DMS with NTCIP Requirements. Common applications include one-lane work zones where traffic may flow only in one direction at any given time. Read More

NTSB publishes agenda for child passenger safety forum.

December 2, 2010

Scheduled for Dec. 9, 2010, Child Passenger Safety in the Air and in Automobiles forum will be chaired by NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman. Three panels will address subjects such as safety risks to children when flying in airplanes or riding in automobiles; best practices for protecting children when traveling; child seat, seat belt, and vehicle design improvements; and identification of effective interventions for increasing use of child seats and seat belts. Social Responsibility Guidance cannot be used as certification standard.

ISO and International Accreditation Forum (IAF) stated that ISO 26000 is not able to be and may not be used for certification. Additionally, both organizations indicated they would take action against claims of certification to said standard. ISO 26000 provides guidance on what social responsibility is and how organizations can operate in socially responsible manner. However, it is not management system standard and does not contain requirements for audits or certifications. Read More

Demand for Lighting Equipment rises slightly during 2010 Q3.

NEMA's Lighting Systems Index (LSI) ticked 0.9% higher on quarter-to-quarter basis during 2010 Q3 and showed 5.6% gain on year-over-year basis. Although LSI has trended higher since hitting cyclical and all-time low during 2009 Q2, aggregate lighting equipment demand remains low. Regarding underlying mix of lighting systems products, growth was seen across all 5 groups. However, only fluorescent ballast shipments registered substantial increase in demand from one year ago. ISO Standards announced for safety-related parts of control systems.

ASABE announces 4 international standards that provide guidelines for design and assessment of safety-related electrical and electronic systems on tractors used in agriculture and forestry. ISO 25119 series adopts risk-based design approach while providing means of specifying performance levels for safety-related functions. Intended to reduce specific risks under all operating conditions, standards provide requirements for entire lifecycle of control system, from design through decommissioning. Read More

EPA screens 1,000 chemicals for toxicity using ToxCast. .

Integrating advances in molecular biology, chemistry, and computer science, ToxCast screening program determines how chemical exposures impact the human body and how chemicals most likely lead to health effects. When fully implemented, ToxCast will be able to screen thousands of chemicals in fast, cost-effective tests that provide relevant information. Front-End Loader Safety Standard has been revised by ASABE.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) completed its revision to front-end loader safety standard ANSI/ASAE S355.4, Safety Practices for Agricultural Front-End Loaders. Specifically, revisions clarify normal operation and travel of loader, loader arm position during transport, and travel locks. References for document were also revised. Read More
