NREL's Research Support Facility earns second LEED® Platinum.

Research Support Facility on campus of NREL in Golden, CO has earned its second LEED® Platinum designation for new construction from U.S. Green Building Council. LEED designation was awarded to 138,000 sq-ft RSF Expansion project, which added third wing to main office building. Between finish of initial RSF and start of expansion wing, NREL's Advanced Commercial Buildings Research team worked with design-build team and identified strategies to reduce energy use in RSF expansion by additional 17%. Louisiana Generating ordered to resolve Clean Air Act violations.

December 4, 2012

U.S. EPA and Department of Justice announced Louisiana Generating agreed to settlement at its Big Cajun II coal-fired power plant in New Roads, LA that will eliminate 27,300+ tons of harmful emissions per year. Settlement will require Louisiana Generating to spend ~$250 million to reduce air pollution as well as pay $3.5 million civil fine and spend $10.5 million on environmental mitigation. Reductions will be achieved via pollution controls, natural gas conversion, and emission caps. Read More

Plastics Technical Conference will take place in Lyon, France.

Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) has selected Lyon, France for future site of EUROTEC® 2013, which will take place July 4–5 at Lyon’s Cité Congress Exhibition Centre. Conference will feature 200+ original, peer-reviewed presentations on such topics as automotive, composites, extrusion, injection molding, and thermoforming. EPA recommends new recreational water quality criteria.

Pursuant to U.S. District Court order and as required by Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health Act of 2000, EPA recommended new recreational water quality criteria that will help protect people during visits to beaches and waters. Science-based criteria helps states improve public health protection by addressing broader range of illness symptoms, providing more protective recommendations for coastal waters, encouraging early alerts to beachgoers, and promoting rapid water testing. Incandescent Lamp Shipments Index shows resilient third quarter.

December 4, 2012

NEMA's index for A-line incandescent lamps increased 20.2% during Q3 2012, while compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) index registered 3.3% decline compared to previous quarter. Halogen A-line lamp shipments increased 83.3% on quarterly basis, and their share increased 1.5 percentage points to 4% of combined market. CFLs posted 20.6% share (4.1 point decline from previous quarter), while share of incandescent lamps increased to 75.4%. Read More

David Shea to be recognized for communications excellence.

With 50+ years of experience as public relations practitioner, David J. Shea has been selected to receive 2012 Lauren D. Lyman Award for outstanding achievement in aerospace communications. This prize goes to journalists or public relations professionals in aviation who exhibit its namesake's standard of excellence. EPA appoints heads of Science Advisory Committees.

U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson has appointed 2 engineers to serve as Chairs of 2 independent Federal Advisory Committees, EPA Science Advisory Board and Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee. Dr. David Allen, an internationally recognized engineer specializing in air quality, will serve as SAB Chair, while Dr. H. Christopher Frey, an environmental engineer expert in quantitative methods for dealing with variability and uncertainty, will serve as CASAC Chair. Each will serve 2-year term. Read More

BIO Thanks Senators for stance on military biofuel producers.

BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood thanked Senators Kay Hagan, Tim Johnson and co-sponsors for amending language in National Defense Authorization Act of 2013 that blocked Department of Defense's (DoD) participation in public-private partnerships to produce advanced biofuels. Greenwood said military leaders, recognizing that building domestic advanced biofuels industry to produce cost-competitive fuels is national security priority, responded by proposing public-private partnerships.
