EPA to develop regulation for perchlorate.

February 3, 2011

U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson announced agency's decision to move forward with development of regulation for perchlorate to protect Americans from potential health impacts. Perchlorate is both a naturally occurring and man-made chemical, and scientific research indicates that it may impact normal function of the thyroid. In a separate action, agency is moving towards establishing a drinking water standard to address group of up to 16 toxic chemicals that may pose risks to human health. Read More

Virtualization Security Guidelines released by NIST.

NIST has issued final version of NIST SP 800-125, Guide to Security for Full Virtualization Technologies. In addition to describing security concerns associated with full virtualization technologies for server and desktop virtualization, it provides recommendations for addressing said concerns. Guide is intended for system administrators, security program managers, security engineers, and anyone else involved in designing, deploying, or maintaining full virtualization technologies. Virginia Congressman Robert Wittman (R-VA) received NAM Award for Manufacturing Legislative Excellence in recognition of his consistent support of manufacturers and their employees across the United States. Award was presented at an event sponsored by NAM member, Colonial Circuits, Inc. Harry Hertz, director of Baldrige Performance Excellence Program at NIST, has been named Honorary Fellow of American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). Specifically, Hertz is being recognized "for his role in establishing healthcare as an official category of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and for his career dedication to performance excellence." ISO Standard supports advancements in nanotechnology.

Authored by ISO Technical Committee 229, ISO 10808:2010 outlines requirements for the characterization of airborne nanoparticles in inhalation exposure chambers for the purpose of inhalation toxicity studies. Standard takes into account particular characteristics of nanoparticles, including particle mass, size distribution, concentration, and composition, and is anticipated to encourage the use of consistent characterization methods by researchers worldwide. Nonresidential Fixed Investment ends higher.

According to Jan 28 GDP report by U.S. Commerce Department, nonresidential fixed investment increased 4.4% in fourth quarter of 2010 following 10% increase in the third quarter. For the year, nonresidential fixed investment was up 5.5%, following a 17.1% drop in 2009. Residential fixed investment increased 3.4% in the fourth quarter, marking the first increase since the third quarter of 2009. Personal consumption expenditures grew 4.4% in fourth quarter as expenditures in goods jumped 10.1%. Read More

ANSI Issues Reminder to ASDs for compliance form submissions.

ANSI-Accredited Standard Developers (ASDs) are reminded that 2011 ASD procedural compliance form must be completed and submitted to ANSI by March 31, 2011. After reviewing 2010 edition of ANSI Essential Requirements: Due process requirements for American National Standards, ASDs should complete ANSI Procedural Compliance Form, which was recently forwarded via email to primary contact for each ANSI ASD. Announcement made at ASHRAE's 2011 Winter Conference proclaimed that more than 30% energy savings can be achieved using ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2010, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings versus 2004 version. PCB Industry Shows Gains in December 2010 according to report.

According to IPC President and CEO Denny McGuirk, IPC's December findings from North American PCB Statistical Program show "a good month for the North American PCB industry, with sales growth rates in the double digits." He noted that while orders are slowing for rigid PCBs, flex orders and sales are "up significantly." This monthly survey of North American PCB industry tracks bookings and shipments from US and Canadian facilities in order to provide indicators of regional demand. Read More

EPA announced it will accept public input on whether to include vapor intrusion threats as component for incorporating hazardous waste sites on National Priorities List of Superfund sites. NAM Official approves of OSHA withdrawal of MSD proposal.

NAM VP of Human Resources Policy Joe Trauger said manufacturers are pleased with OSHA's temporary withdrawal of its proposed additional reporting column for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) on employer injury and illness logs. "With the unemployment rate still unacceptably high, we urge OSHA to continue to demonstrate that it is curbing the unnecessary regulations that are holding back job growth by permanently withdrawing this ill-conceived proposed rule," Trauger added. ODVA to form special interest group for rail transport.

ODVA announced that it will form special interest group (SIG) to evolve ODVA technologies for rail transport, including on-board train controls, monitoring, signaling, and demand-response.
