According to December 2010 manufacturing report from the Institute for Supply Management, U.S. manufacturing sector expanded at the fastest pace since May 2010, reinforcing signs that an upward turn in the economy is building momentum. Standards are an important part of the engine driving the manufacturing industry, increasing operational efficiency, reducing regulatory compliance and procurement costs, and avoiding duplication of effort. Catherine H. Pilarz named ASTM Chairman of the Board.

Catherine (Kitty) H. Pilarz, senior director of Mattel/Fisher-Price product safety in East Aurora, NY, has served on ASTM board of directors since 2006. She is vice chairman of new projects for ASTM Committee F15 on Consumer Products and co-chairman of Subcommittee F15.18 on Cribs, Toddler Beds, Play Yards, Bassinets, Cradles, and Changing Tables. NTSB Meeting considers airbags in general aviation aircraft.

NTSB held public Board meeting to consider safety study on airbags in general aviation aircraft. NTSB initiated study to examine effectiveness of airbags in mitigating occupant injury in survivable GA accident, to identify any unintended consequences of airbag deployments, and to develop procedures to assist investigators in documenting airbag systems in future investigations. Thomas Marsh, president of Centrotrade Minerals and Metals Inc., currently serves as vice chairman of Committee D11 on Rubber, chairman of Subcommittee D11.22 on Natural Rubber, and as secretary of Subcommittee D11.23 on Synthetic Rubbers. In his role at Centrotrade, Marsh directs day-to-day operations; provides technical, regulatory, and standards organization oversight to sister groups in Europe and Asia; and administers material specifications and contracts. Reduction in Lead Bill signed into law by President Obama.

January 12, 2011

PMI is pleased to announce that the national Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act was passed on December 17, 2010 during the lame duck session and was signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011. This bill lowers national standard for lead in faucets, pipes, and pipefittings from 8.0% to 0.25%. There is widespread support within the industry for this legislation, including members of PMI, which make up 95% of small, medium, and large plumbing manufacturers. Read More

Manufacturing Technology Consumption is up 82.7% year-to-date.

According to AMTDA (American Machine Tool Distributors' Association) and AMT, November U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $318.18 million. This figure, reported by companies participating in USMTC program, is down 17.7% from October but up 81.1% compared to November 2009. With year-to-date total of $2,792.58 million, 2010 is up 82.7% from previous year. Broadband Subscription reaches 509 million lines worldwide.

According to figures prepared by Point Topic and announced by Broadband Forum in its Global Broadband and IPTV Industry Update, year on year growth rates of 6.7% have taken broadband subscription to 508,761,837 in third quarter of 2010. Over 14.3 million lines were added in third quarter alone, representing 2.88% growth over previous quarter. In addition, total number of IPTV subscribers worldwide now stands at 41.9 million, representing growth of 7.3% in 3 months to end September. Read More

EPA and HHS announce scientific assessments on fluoride.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. EPA are announcing steps to ensure that standards and guidelines on fluoride in drinking water continue to provide maximum protection to American people to support good dental health, especially in children. HHS is proposing that the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water can be set at lowest end of current optimal range to prevent tooth decay, and EPA is initiating review of the maximum amount of fluoride allowed in drinking water.
