ASTM elects Daniel S. Janikowski to board of directors.

Daniel S. Janikowski, technical manager at Plymouth Tube Co., has been elected to serve 3-year term on ASTM International board of directors. An ASTM fellow and Award of Merit recipient, Janikowski, who joined ASTM International in 1989, currently serves as chairman of Subcommittee A01.10 on Stainless and Alloy Steel Tubular Products. At Plymouth Tube Co., Janikowski assists customers with materials selection, specifications, testing, and analysis for power plant heat transfer applications. Read More

AAMA Standard addresses performance testing of handle sets.

AAMA 903-12, Voluntary Standard for Performance Testing of Handle Sets used with Multipoint Hardware on Side-Hinged Doors, establishes test procedures and performance criteria for evaluating lever handle sets as a standalone hardware item. Standard references AAMA 907-12, Voluntary Specification for Corrosion Resistant Coating on Carbon Steel Components, which covers requirements for coatings on carbon steels used for hardware components in window, door, and skylight applications. PMA to host 20th annual conference for automotive suppliers.

On April 30-May 1, 2013, PMA will celebrate its 20th annual Automotive Parts Suppliers Council meeting. Highlights include an automotive forecast panel, moderated by Dave Andrea of the Original Equipment Suppliers Association; a presentation on capacity constraints, by Laurie Harbour of Harbour Results; a supply chain panel, moderated by Advanced Purchasing Dynamics; a special luncheon for women in the automotive industry; and a networking reception and luncheon. FAA to review Boeing 787 design and production.

In light of a series of recent events, FAA will conduct a comprehensive review of the Boeing 787 critical systems, including design, manufacture, and assembly. Purpose of review is to validate work conducted during certification process and further ensure that aircraft meets FAA’s high level of safety. Team of FAA and Boeing engineers and inspectors will conduct joint review, with emphasis on aircraft’s electrical power and distribution system. Papers are invited for symposium on Thermal and Oxidative Stability of Biodiesel Blended D975 and D7467 Compliant Fuels: Excluding S5000 Grade Fuels. In addition to fuel quality/stability issues after refinery and pipeline distribution, topics include test methods for qualitatively and quantitatively defining biodiesel blended fuels instability; impact of fuel additives on instability of biodiesel blended fuel products; and stakeholder evidence of fuel instability and associated problems. JILA Physicists achieve evaporative cooling of molecules.

Physicists from JILA, joint institute of NIST and University of Colorado (CU) Boulder, have chilled gas of molecules to very low temperatures by adapting familiar process by which hot cup of coffee cools. Specifically, researchers developed magnetic trap and technique to achieve evaporative cooling of hydroxyl molecules. This demonstration, reported in December 20, 2012 issue of Nature, marks first time evaporative cooling has been achieved with molecules. Read More

Launch of 2013 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) application process enables U.S. organizations in 3 business sectors – manufacturing, small business, and service – to join those in health care, education, and nonprofit in applying for 2013 Baldrige Award. Applicants receive evaluation of entire organization and performance management system, resulting in report outlining strengths and opportunities for improvement. Submission deadline for Step 1 materials is February 19. Read More
