FABTECH Speaker Examines Reshoring as means to more jobs.

September 2, 2011

Harry Moser, Reshoring Initiative founder, will discuss how bringing manufacturing back to U.S. would have a more positive impact on unemployment than anything in Federal Government's 2012 Budget Plan. Specifically, he says it could lower national unemployment rate from 9% to 4%. Moser will lead a session explaining true costs of offshoring and value of reshoring. Manufacturers Pledge to Increase Internships to train students.

President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, in partnership with NAM and other business groups, announced that nearly 50 businesses have pledged to double or increase number of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) internships available to students. NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons called this increase "critical to economic growth and job creation." NAM and the Manufacturing Institute have continually advocated STEM programs and training to build skilled workforce. Read More

Manufacturers pleased with Keystone XL Pipeline study.

According to statement made by Chip Yost, NAM VP for Energy and Resources, manufacturers are pleased that State Department issued final Environmental Impact Study on the Keystone XL pipeline. He stated "The country is one step closer to construction of the pipeline, which will create thousands of jobs, generate economic growth and establish energy stability." Motion Control Market Recovery continues in 2nd quarter 2011.

According to MCA statistics, motion control market was slightly down in second quarter 2011 and is largely consistent with measures of manufacturing sector performance for the period. For the market as a whole, orders in second quarter 2011 were up 23.8% year-over-year for all product markets that MCA monitors. When compared to Q1 2011, second quarter market results showed improvement with shipments growing 4.0%. Growth was evident across most product categories. Read More

Organizing committee for Pipe and Tube Nashville 2012 is seeking papers and roundtable participants for "Optimizing Operations through Continuous Improvement" conference, taking place June 26-28. For papers, committee is accepting any topic concerning tube or pipe production and fabrication. Roundtable discussion topics are bending; TIG vs. multi-cathode, TIG vs. TIG-plasma, and TIG vs. laser welding; roll tooling design; and methods of inline annealing following tube mill welding. EPA announces schedule for dioxin assessment.

U.S. EPA announced that it plans to complete the non-cancer portion of its Reanalysis of Key Issues Related to Dioxin Toxicity and Response to NAS Comments, and post the final non-cancer assessment to the Integrated Risk Information System by the end of January 2012. After completing non-cancer portion, EPA will finalize the cancer portion as quickly as possible. Decision to split assessment into 2 portions follows release by Science Advisory Board of its final review report on EPA's Reanalysis. Read More

Machine Vision Market posts healthy results in second quarter.

According to the Quarterly Machine Vision Sales Tracking Report of the AIA, machine vision sales grew 16% in North America in the second quarter of 2011. Report recorded robust sales across almost all major machine vision supplier markets, including cameras, lighting, optics, software, application-specific machine vision systems, and smart cameras. It also found that machine vision industry continues to expect sales to stay at current levels or to increase in next 6 months. Read More

To address hazards posed by water-damaged electrical equipment in Hurricane Irene's aftermath, NEMA is offering complimentary copies of Guidelines for Handling Water-Damaged Electrical Equipment to electrical distributors, contractors, inspectors, and residents in water-damaged regions. Document provides advice on safe handling of electrical equipment that has been exposed to water and also outlines which items will require complete replacement and which can be reconditioned. NFPA Education and Technology Foundation has awarded a major research grant to Dr. Brian Steward and the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department at Iowa State University. The project entitled Dielectric Spectroscope Sensor Development for Hydraulic Fluid Contaminant Detection, focuses on developing new technology for low-cost, on-board, real-time fluid power sensors.
