India Construction Machinery Expo to be held in February 2011.

BAUMA CONEXPO SHOW in India (bC India) will feature 508 exhibitors from over 30 countries that will showcase latest products and innovations in machinery and equipment for construction, mining, and building materials. Event will include nearly 88,000 m² of exhibition space, with 70% of registered exhibitors headquartered outside of India. It will be held between February 8-11, 2011 in Mumbai, India, with Indian Minister of Urban Development, Kamal Nath, as opening speaker. Read More

CODiE(TM) Awards were presented at a dinner held in conjunction with 2011 SIIA Information Industry Summit in New York. For first time, 2 best overall awards were presented to companies that scored highest among winners in product categories. AIM Board elects new Chairs for RFID/symbology committees.

Board of Directors of AIM announced election of George Wright IV, of Product Identification and Processing Systems, as chair of Technical Symbology Committee, which focuses on symbology design as well as printing and decoding algorithms. Wright is also active member of AIM's ADC1 TAG standards committee. Elected as Chair of RFID Experts Group (REG), Dr. Patrick King of Michelin has served as vice chair of REG for past year and was 2006 AIM Percival Award recipient. Read More

HVAC/R Industry Achievements recognized by ASHRAE.

At its 2011 Winter Conference held January 29 through February 2, 36 people will be recognized by ASHRAE for contributions to the Society and building industry. Specific honors include F. Paul Anderson Award, 50-Year Member Award, and ASHRAE Technology Awards. In addition to elevation of 13 members to Fellow ASHRAE membership grade, awards were offered for ASHRAE Student Design Project Competition. John F. James International Award and E.K. EPA Listening Sessions will help update pollution standards.

Open to the public, 5 listening sessions will be held to help EPA update Clean Air Act pollution standards to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution from fossil fuel power plants and petroleum refineries. Each listening session is scheduled to last 2 hr and will feature round table discussion among stakeholder representatives who have been identified and selected for their expertise in Clean Air Act standard-setting process. Tasked with overseeing manufacturing policy, Ron Bloom has been named Special Assistant to President for Manufacturing Policy within White House's National Economic Council. AMT President Douglas K. Woods expressed optimism that this helps in establishing national manufacturing strategy. Specifically, Woods said he is "hopeful this is recognition from the administration that job creation and competitiveness depend on a national agenda that emphasizes the importance of manufacturing." U.S. manufacturing sector has achieved 17th straight month of expansion as EASTEC 2011 draws near. EASTEC attendee surveys forecast optimism with 77% reporting that they were attending the show to see new products and 57% reporting that they are expanding into emerging technologies. Passenger Rail Progressing according to bew AASHTO study.

States Ramping Up Action on Passenger Rail study indicates state DOTs, Federal Railroad Administration, and freight railroads are working to expand national passenger rail system. States have been told to proceed on almost $4.3 billion worth of projects, and passenger rail ridership is also growing. Almost 14 million people rode on state-supported rail lines outside of northeast corridor between Oct 2009 and Sept 2010, and another 10 million rode trains between Washington, DC, and Boston. North American EBCIs firmly indicate expansion in January.

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for North American conditions points to improving environment in January. While down slightly from December's 68, index of 63.6 is near high end of readings recorded since beginning of 2010's third quarter. Intensity of change in conditions measured +0.5, up from December and November, while EBCI for North American conditions 6 months in future rose for fifth straight month. NTSB Chairman discusses future of transportation safety.

NTSB Chairman Deborah A. P. Hersman said accident investigations show need for new perspectives on safety culture, record keeping, and aging infrastructure. When she spoke to audience at Transportation Research Board conference, she discussed four investigations, highlighted several accidents, and encouraged attendees to learn from them to prevent future accidents.
