BIO Joins CA's LCFS Advisory Panel to advance biotechnology.

California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) encourages deployment of technology for advanced biofuels and biomass developed by California's industrial biotechnology community. BIO, along with several of its member companies, will offer input on progress and potential adjustments to LCFS as member of California Air Resources Board LCFS Advisory Panel. Sensor Technology Presentations are sought for ASTM workshop.

Scheduled for November 16, 2011, New Sensor Technologies and Issues with Existing Technologies for Fatigue, Fracture, and Mechanical Testing will identify and explore new sensor technologies that can be used with these types of test methods so that they may be included in relevant ASTM standards. Robotics Industry to present Engelberger Awards.

The Engelberger Robotics Award, named after Joseph F. Engelberger, known throughout the world as "the father of robotics," will be presented during dinner ceremony on March 22 at Automate 2011/42nd International Symposium on Robotics. Åke Lindqvist will receive 2011 Engelberger Award for Leadership, while Henrik Christensen will receive 2011 Engelberger Award for Education. North American Robotics Companies post best year since 2007.

Strong growth in 2010 was reported by North American-based robotics companies, which posted best year since 2007 according to statistics released by RIA. North American robot suppliers reported orders of 13,174 robots valued at $845.6 million from North American-based companies, increases of 39% in units and 49% in dollars. When orders from customers outside North America are included, totals are 15,860 robots valued at $993.2 million for gains of 52% in units and 58% in dollars. Read More

ASTM Leather Committee approves wet blue/wet white standard.

February 11, 2011

Wet blue and wet white are intermediate products used by tanneries that process natural hides and skins into leather. Natural fats and oils need to be largely removed from wet blue and wet white for leather processing to be done properly, but no standard had previously existed to evaluate effectiveness of such removal. ASTM International Committee D31 on Leather has developed such a standard, ASTM D7674, Test Method for Hexane/Petroleum Ether Extract in Wet Blue and Wet White. Read More

Developed by Subcommittee F25.07 on General Requirements, ASTM F2876, Practice for Thermal Rating and Installation of Internal Combustion Engine Packages for Use in Hazardous Locations in Marine Applications will help prevent fire and explosions on decks of tank vessels used to transport hazardous products.
