China Delegation visits ASTM headquarters.

A group from the China Association of Machinery Industry for Environmental Protection visited ASTM headquarters for a training session on Dec. 15. Delegation, which included representatives from manufacturers of environmental monitoring and sampling equipment located throughout China, learned about ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality and its Subcommittee D22.03 on Ambient Atmospheres and Source Emissions. As delegate from Kosovo Standardization Agency (AKS), Astrit Hasani visited ASTM headquarters from December 2–4, 2014 for orientation and training. Hasani is head of quality infrastructure division of Ministry of Trade and Industry in republic of Kosovo, and ASTM signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) with AKS in 2013. Read More

EPA's Actions to Restrict PFOA yield health benefits.

January 21, 2015

To further agency and industry achievements, U.S. EPA proposed measures to ensure that perfluorinated chemicals that have been phased out do not re-enter the marketplace without review. Action builds on several EPA has taken since 2006, when reaching agreement with companies to phase-out chemicals by the end of 2015. Participating companies are on track to phase-out these toxic chemicals and have successfully developed over 150 alternatives. Read More

Administration takes steps forward on climate action plan.

January 20, 2015

Obama Administration is announcing new goal to cut methane emissions from oil and gas sector by 40–45% from 2012 levels by 2025, and a set of actions to put U.S. on path to achieve this ambitious goal. EPA will initiate a rulemaking effort to set standards for methane and VOC emissions from new and modified oil and gas production sources, and natural gas processing and transmission sources. In developing these standards, EPA will work with industry, states, tribes, and other stakeholders. Read More

Routine monitoring for presence of ferrous and nonferrous wear particles in gearboxes is a crucial function for machinery across wide range of industries. ASTM International standard, D7917, Inductive Wear Debris Sensors in Gearbox and Drivetrain Applications, provides practices for selection, application, and use of inductive type metal debris sensors that are used to indicate presence of such debris in gearbox applications. In conjunction with Dubai Municipality's Dubai Central Laboratory, ASTM supported the 2nd Annual Quality Assurance for Sustainable Construction Materials Conference, held Dec 10-11. ASTM provided keynote address, "The Role of ASTM International in Improving Quality Standards," to the 180 attendees. While in Dubai, ASTM staff also visited the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company to present information about ASTM's new self-guided online training courses on ASTM test methods for petroleum. Read More

EPA Releases Report on 2013 toxic chemical waste releases.

January 19, 2015

According to annual U.S. EPA Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) report, most toxic chemical waste managed at industrial facilities in USA was not released into environment in 2013. Report shows approximately 22 billion pounds (84%) of 26 billion pounds of toxic chemical waste were managed via such preferred practices as recycling. Of 4 billion pounds disposed of or otherwise released to environment, 66% went to land, 19% to air, and 5% to water. Remaining 10% was transferred to other facilities. Read More

EPA aims to reduce methane and ozone-forming pollution.

As part of Obama Administration’s commitment to addressing climate change, EPA has outlined series of steps it plans to take to address methane and smog-forming VOC emissions from oil and gas industry. Agency’s commonsense strategy will reduce methane pollution from new sources, reduce ozone-forming pollutants from existing sources in areas that do not meet federal ozone health standards, and build on work that states and industry are doing to address emissions from existing sources elsewhere. Proposed Standards to highlight uses of activated carbon.

Proposed standard, WK47401, Test Method for Xylenol Orange Dye Test, describes relative adsorption rate of unused or reactivated carbons by adsorption of xylenol orange from aqueous solution. Standard will cover activated carbons that are used for treatment of drinking water as well as those used to produce consumer products or treat wastewater. Proposed standard WK47421 will describe how laser light scattering technique can determine particle size distribution of fine mesh activated carbon. Read More

Proposed ASTM Standard covers biodegradable hydraulic fluid.

Proposed ASTM standard WK31234, Specification for Biodegradable, Low Aquatic Toxicity Hydraulic Fluids, intends to make it easier to ensure that proper hydraulic fluids are being used at environmentally sensitive job sites. Biodegradable fluids have been found to perform differently than traditional mineral oils, creating a need for separate performance classifications. Fluids to be covered by ASTM WK31234 are used in industrial/mobile hydraulic applications. Read More

ASTM F3070, Guide for Evaluating Area Search Dog Crews or Teams, will define knowledge, skills, and abilities required for dog crew or team to perform area search. Search and rescue dog teams are currently tested to different levels yet similar terminology is used to describe abilities of dogs. Using F3070 will help in developing testing paradigms that better identify core competencies and unify various search and rescue organizations under terminology that is based on single national standard. Metallic-Coated Steel Sheet Standard adds thickness tolerances.

Revisions to ASTM International standard A924/A924M, Specification for General Requirements for Steel Sheet, Metallic-Coated by the Hot-Dip Process, will increase its flexibility. Along with primary changes of addition of heavy thickness tolerances to Table 2 and Table S1.1, changes include increase in thickness covered by Table 13 to 0.250 in. Such changes ensure standard covers heavier gauge zinc coated products that might provide alternatives to batch hot-dip coating of finished parts. Read More

To address issues raised by various parties during 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, U.S. EPA proposes amending requirements under National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan (NCP). Proposed Subpart J revisions deal with product toxicity and efficacy test methodologies, toxicity and efficacy criteria, human health and safety information requirements, area planning requirements for chemical and biological agent use authorization, and dispersant monitoring requirements.
