Barbara Goodstein receives Edward A. Groobert Award.

ELFA has awarded Barbara Goodstein, Partner at Mayer Brown LLP, the Edward A. Groobert Award for Legal Excellence in recognition of her significant contributions to the equipment leasing and finance industry and the association's Legal Committee. Goodstein is currently a member of ELFA’s Legal Committee Subcommittee on Air, Rail and Marine. She served as a member of association’s Legal Committee from 2002–2004 and as a member of ELFA Board of Directors from 2004–2007. Read More

FAA Commits to New Agreements with TCCA and EASA.

October 1, 2015

On September 15, FAA signed agreements with international regulatory partners European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Transport Canada (TCCA) allowing these authorities to rely on each other's regulatory systems. In addition to eliminating duplicate processes, said agreements will accelerate installation of safety enhancing equipment on aircraft and conserve time and expense for both industry and regulatory authorities. Research could lead to laser-powered lightning rods.

Team of researchers has demonstrated new techniques that bring lasers as lighting rods closer to reality. When powerful laser beam shoots through air, it leaves thin trail of hot, ionized particles. Because this stream of plasma conducts electricity, it could be used to channel away damaging lightning bolts. Jenya Papeer, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, will present the work on October 22, 2015 at Frontiers in Optics, The Optical Society’s annual meeting and conference. Read More

Monthly Confidence Index eases in September.

According to September 2015 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry, confidence is 61.1, easing from sharp rise in the August index of 67.4. When asked to assess their business conditions over next 4 months, 22.2% of executives responding said they believe business conditions will improve, a decrease from 36.4% in August. Also, 29.6% of respondents believe demand for leases and loans to fund capex will increase over next 4 months, down from 40.9% in August. Read More

IPC Hand Soldering Competition will appear at productronica 2015.

In cooperation with productronica 2015, IPC will present Hand Soldering Competition in Hall A2 at stand 405. Competitors will demonstrate soldering skills from November 10–13 in competition for 1st place (€300), 2nd place (€200), and 3rd place (€100) prizes as well as their spot at IPC Hand Soldering World Championship at IPC APEX EXPO® in Las Vegas, NV (March 15–17, 2016). NEMA Industrial Controls Indexes decrease in second quarter.

NEMA’s Primary Industrial Controls index showed 2.5% decrease in second quarter of 2015 compared to previous quarter. Index was down 2.4% compared to same period 1 year ago. A broader measure of shipments, NEMA’s Primary Industrial Controls and Adjustable Speed Drives Index, posted 1% percent decrease in second quarter compared to first. By contrast, index saw a 4% year-over-year increase. Read More

ELFA releases survey of economic activity for August.

According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25), overall new business volume for August was $6.9 billion, down 7% from August 2014. Volume was down 18% from $8.4 billion in July. Year to date, cumulative new business volume increased 6% compared to 2014. Receivables over 30 days were 0.99%, down slightly from 1.01% the previous month. Charge-offs were 0.22%, up from 0.19 the previous month, and credit approvals totaled 79.3% in August, up from 78.6% in July. Read More

ANSI Seeks Comments regarding ISO activity on Next-Gen toilets.

Together with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), ANSI plans to submit 2 proposals to ISO on sustainable non-sewered sanitation systems (next-generation toilets) as practical solution for sanitation-related death and disease in developing nations. Plans include developing international workshop agreement (IWA), which would serve as basis for international standard developed through ISO project committee. ASHRAE Standard helps determine office equipment heat gain.

ASHRAE/ANSI Standard 203-2014, Method of Test for Determining Heat Gain of Office Equipment Used in Buildings, prescribes methods of test to determine the range and average operating heat gains of electrical equipment for use in cooling load calculations. Standard applies to plug-load type electrical equipment, such as computers, monitors, printers, and projectors, which are estimated to use between 20–50% of building's energy. Read More

FAA Opens Arctic to commercial small unmanned aircraft.

September 30, 2015

While aboard Westward Wind on September 12, FAA Alaskan Region inspector Jay Skaggs helped ensure first FAA-approved commercial flights by unmanned aircraft was conducted safely. Westward Wind, which carried 4 Insitu Scan Eagle UAS to perform marine mammal and ice surveys, captured UAS after successful 36 min flight. This flight represents efforts by people from FAA, ConocoPhillips, Insitu, and other agencies who worked for months to open up Arctic for commercial UAS operations. Read More

Organized by SPE Composites Division, 15th Automotive Composites Conference and Exhibition (ACCE) spoke to auto industry's growing interest in composite materials. VMA to hold expanded valve basics course.

VMA's next Valve Basics Seminar & Exhibits will be held Oct 21–23 at the Hyatt Regency San Antonio-Riverwalk. The 101 portion of the course (Oct 21–22) consists of lessons that guide attendees through world of valves and systems they help control. New this year is the addition of a third day of programming (Oct 23), which features intermediate-level courses on topics such as standards, materials, packings and fugitive emissions, critical service applications, and valve repair. EPA Adds Evaluations to detect potential defeat devices.

In its letter sent to vehicle manufacturers, U.S. EPA said it is adding evaluations designed to look for potential defeat devices to its confirmatory testing. This comes after EPA sent Notice of Violation of the Clean Air Act to Volkswagen AG, Audi AG, and Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. alleging that 4-cylinder Volkswagen and Audi diesel cars (model years 2009–2015) include software, known as a "defeat device," that circumvents EPA emissions standards. EPA Finalizes Rule to modernize Clean Water Act reporting.

September 30, 2015

EPA-finalized rule modernizes Clean Water Act reporting for municipalities, industries, and other facilities. It requires regulated entities and state and federal regulators to use existing, available information technology to electronically report data required by National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program instead of filing written paper reports. According to EPA estimates, full implementation in 46 states and Virgin Islands Territory will save ~$22.6 million each year. Read More
