Large Wind Turbine could enhance jobs, energy independence.

Built by French power-generation company Alstom and erected at National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) near Boulder, CO, Eco 100 is a 3 MW wind turbine with blades longer than a basketball court and tower the length of a football field. It is being tested at NWTC, part of U.S. Department of Energy's NREL, so it can be certified for use in the U.S. Certification will mean U.S. jobs for years to come, and what is learned during testing will contribute to target of 20% wind energy by 2030. IPC releases PCB industry results for March 2011.

According to North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were up 5.1% and bookings decreased 10.1% in March 2011 from March 2010. Compared to previous month, rigid PCB shipments increased 14.9% and bookings increased 26.0%. In March 2011, flexible circuit shipments were up 9.1% and bookings declined 7.4% from March 2010. Compared to previous month, flexible circuit shipments increased 15.0% and bookings decreased 13.2%. Book-to-bill ratios were 0.94 and 1.04, respectively. Read More

NIST's publication, Foundations for Innovation: Photovoltaic Technologies for the 21st Century, summarizes conclusions from a 2010 special workshop. During workshop, participants discussed priority challenges for the 4 dominant photovoltaic technologies and defined critical milestones on the path to solutions. Challenges range from reaching a better scientific understanding of devices themselves to developing practical engineering data for determining optimal use of photovoltaics. Read More

Durham and Southern Research Inst. install clean diesel technology.

As part of their continued efforts to improve air quality, Southern Research Institute and the Durham City Fleet Management Department partnered in the installation of emission-reducing technology on 16 heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment in use by City's Solid Waste Management, Public Works, and Water Management Departments. Selective catalytic reduction systems reduce significant amounts of NOx emissions from exhaust, resulting in positive impacts on Durham's air quality. Read More

According to policy white paper published by BIO, federal Renewable Fuel Standard provides stable market support and pricing system needed to attract private investment to advanced biofuels development. Paper was presented at Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference in Washington, DC, where executive VP of BIO's Industrial and Environmental Section Brent Erickson said standard provides "assured market" and "significant degree of price certainty" for cellulosic and advanced biofuels. NREL, Alstom Celebrate wind turbine installation.

Officials from US Department of Energy (DOE) and DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), along with officials from Alstom, commemorated successful installation and full capacity operation of 3 MW, 60 Hz Alstom ECO 100 wind turbine at NREL's National Wind Technology Center. After completion of initial analysis and testing on turbine, NREL and Alstom will continue pursuing research and development in advanced technology areas such as controls and offshore wind energy. NIST Offers Free Standards Access to first responders.

NIST Office of Law Enforcement Standards (OLES), in collaboration with NIST National Center for Standards and Certification Information, launched Internet pilot project to measure U.S. emergency and first responder communities' need for documentary standards. As part of this study, NIST will offer U.S. first responders free access to documentary standards published by ASTM International, IEEE, and the National Fire Protection Association during summer 2011. New National Terrorism Advisory System goes into effect.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced implementation of the new National Terrorism Advisory System, replacing the color-coded alert that had been in effect since 2002. NTAS alerts, defined as Elevated Threat or Imminent Threat, will provide clear, concise information on nature of potential threat, including geographic region, mode of transportation or critical infrastructure potentially affected, actions being taken to ensure public safety, and recommended steps to respond to threat. Energy Star Challenge saves power/money and combats emissions.

One year ago, US EPA challenged manufacturing industry to improve energy efficiency of their facilities by 10% or more within 5 years. Since that time, 240 manufacturing sites have responded to Energy Star Challenge for Industry, and 34 have improved their energy efficiency by requisite amounts. In total, small and large manufacturing facilities that have met this milestone have prevented nearly 119,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent. Read More

ASTM Printing Inks Standard will ensure correct visual effects.

ASTM D7680, Practice for Preparing Prints of Paste Printing Inks by a Motor-Driven Printability Tester, will be used to ensure that printing inks produce the correct visual effects and have the correct physical and chemical performance required before being used in costly manufacture of publications and packages.
