ASTM Standard addresses agricultural raw materials in construction.

Proposed ASTM WK30419 standard may foster greater use of agricultural raw materials, which consist of ligno-cellulosic fibers, similar to wood fibers and particles. With standard, companies that want to bring agricultural fiber products to market will have a way of documenting performance and reliability. Alternative building industries will use standard to improve quality and distribution, and regulators can use standard to help with approvals and safety of alternative materials. Read More

International Petrochemical Conference opens with growth forecast.

At NPRA's 36th International Petrochemical Conference, Charles T. Drevna said, "For the world's petrochemical producers, the overall progress toward economic recovery brings a renewed demand for products and signals revitalized prospects for growth." Drevna added that natural gas reserves in U.S. could grow petrochemical industry, manufacturing in general, and American economy. Electroindustry Business Confidence Index points to continued growth.

Senior executives at NEMA member companies reported that, on balance, business conditions facing their firms improved for fifth consecutive month in March. Electroindustry Business Confidence Index for current North American conditions measured 60.9. However, concerns over disruptions emanating from events in Japan and the Middle East contributed to decline in level of index from 69.6 a month ago. Also, survey's measure of intensity of change slipped to +0.3 from +0.6 in February. Read More

NEMA welcomes Rogers-Carnahan legislation.

NEMA supports introduction of Smart Technologies for Communities Act by Congressmen Russ Carnahan (D-MO) and Mike Rogers (R-MI). Introduced as HR 995, legislation would direct U.S. DOT to create a competitive program that would allow local governments and teams of regional governments to receive grants to support deployment and operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems technologies, which help reduce congestion and improve safety on highways and arterial roads. Solar Tracking Algorithm serves diverse applications.

NREL Senior Scientist Ibrahim Reda and NREL programming expert Afshin Andreas developed a Solar Position Algorithm (SPA) to calculate sun's position with low uncertainty of ±0.0003° at vertex, which is more than 30 times more precise than uncertainty levels for all other algorithms used in solar energy applications. Algorithm and its software are helping solar power manufacturers build more precise trackers, and it also has implications for cellular telephone and agriculture industries. Read More

ASTM Standard helps determine open time for latex paint.

Developed by Subcommittee D01.42 on Architectural Coatings, ASTM D7488 provides means of determining the time available in which paint can be worked into previously painted area. Open time is a key performance property for coatings, particularly for brush applications. According to Carol Hawkins, a scientist with Dow Chemical Co., and chairman of D01.42, as we move away from using solvents in coatings, it is important to develop a test method that formulators can use to determine open time. Attendees of first UK event took 2-day, high-level program of MES/MOM Business Functions courses geared for executives, manufacturing/operations, IT personnel, and sales professionals. Two-day ASTM International training courses will cover ASTM E1527, Practice for Environmental Site Assessments: Phase I Environmental Site Assessment Process; and ASTM E1528, Practice for Environmental Site Assessments: Transaction Screen Process. Developed by ASTM Committee E50 on Environmental Assessment, Risk Management, and Corrective Action, training courses will also detail U.S. EPA rule on All Appropriate Inquiry. Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments course will cover ASTM E1527, which is the national standard for conducting Phase I assessments and includes historical records research of subject property; site reconnaissance; and documentation of findings and report preparation. ASTM E1903 focuses on planning and performance of Phase II investigations, and various approaches used to generate additional information regarding identification of potential contaminants associated with RECs. NREL Fellow Honored for outstanding solar research.

Dr. Arthur J. Nozik, senior research fellow at U.S. Department of Energy's NREL, will be awarded Gustavus John Esselen Award for Chemistry in the Public Interest. Award honors Nozik's solar research, including exploration of future generation concepts for lower cost and more efficient solar conversion. He has published more than 250+ papers and book chapters on basic research in photoelectrochemistry, solid state physics, semiconductor nanoscience, and related interdisciplinary science. Read More

February 2011 PCB Industry Results show many areas of growth.

For February 2011, IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program showed rigid PCB shipments up 11.4% percent and bookings down 7.3% from February 2010. Respective year to date values were up 7.7% and down 7.5%. Book-to-bill ratio dipped to 0.94. Compared to February 2010, respective flexible circuit shipment and booking values were up 8.3% and 36.3%, and respective year-to-date values were up 9.4% and 19.7%. Its goal is to identify frameworks for determining economic impact of any disclosure or breach of protected patient data. Proposed standard ASTM WK31972, Test Method for Mechanical and Electrical Testing of Insulating Links for Lifting Equipment, incorporates design proof test to verify that insulating link between hook and load line on cranes meets minimum specifications for which manufacturer has designed it.
