Jan T. Sehrt accepts Dick Aubin Distinguished Paper Award.

Jan T. Sehrt, Dr.-Ing., of the University of Duisburg-Essen accepted the 2011 RTAM/SME Dick Aubin Distinguished Paper Award, which recognizes innovative applications of rapid prototyping processes and techniques and honors the author for his contribution of ideas and information to the rapid technology and additive manufacturing industry. Sehrt was this year's recipient for his paper titled "Direct Integration of Radio Frequency Identification Tags Into Beam Melted Parts." Read More

EPA Seeks Input on drinking water perchlorate regulation.

U.S. EPA invites small businesses, governments, and not-for-profit organizations to participate as small entity representatives (SERs) for small business advocacy review (SBAR) Panel, which will focus on developing rule to regulate amount of perchlorate, a potentially harmful chemical, in drinking water. EPA seeks self-nominations directly from small organizations that may be subject to rule requirements. Submissions must be received by August, 26 2011. Read More

NTSB Makes Safety Recommendations to FAA.

NTSB Safety Recommendations address lengthening of oxygen mask hoses in cockpits of airplanes used in 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 121 operations (A-11-79). Also, recommendation A-11-80 suggests amending of Advisory Circular 120-80, "In-Flight Fires," to provide clear guidance to flight crews concerning type of breathing equipment to wear when combating cockpit fire, taking into consideration limitations of portable protective breathing equipment in both passenger and cargo operations. SPE Executive Director will steps down at end of 2011.

Susan Oderwald, who joined SPE as Deputy Executive Director in 2001 and became Executive Director in 2004, will be stepping down as Executive Director at the end of 2011. Oderwald called her time with SPE "very rewarding" but stated that it was time for her to "move on to new professional challenges." Russell Broome, SPE's 2011-12 President said SPE Executive Committee is grateful for Oderwald's leadership and expertise over last 11 years. Read More

NTSB-Sponsored Championships to determine top U.S. truck drivers.

August 15, 2011

Professional truck drivers from across U.S. will head to Orlando, FL for 2011 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) and National Step Van Driving Championships (NSVDC). Held August 9-13, 2011, NTDC and NSVDC challenge contestants' driving skills and knowledge of safety, equipment, and industry. Competition course recreates real world obstacles: alley dock, rear/front line stop, scales stop, right/left turn, parallel parking, and straight line driving through diminishing clearance. Statistical QA Programs assess metals testing proficiency.

ASTM Proficiency Testing Programs (PTP) on Metals enable laboratories to assess their performance in conducting test methods, within their own laboratories, when their data is compared against other laboratories that participate worldwide in same program. Wilfried Vancraen accepts RTAM Industry Achievement Award.

Wilfried "Fried" Vancrean, managing director at Materialise in Belgium, accepted RTAM Industry Achievement Award, which recognizes manufacturing professionals who have made exceptional contributions and accomplishments in any industry through application of additive manufacturing technologies. In 1990, Vancrean founded Materialise NV, one of the first rapid prototyping service bureaus in Europe, and in 2010, he launched i.materialise website, making 3D printing accessible to everyone. Ralph H. Nielsen receives H.R. "Russ" Ogden Award.

Ralph H. Nielsen, a primary expert in chemistry of zirconium extraction and purification, received 2011 H.R. "Russ" Ogden Award, which honors outstanding accomplishments in science and technology of reactive and refractory metals and alloys. A graduate of Oregon State University, Nielsen began his career at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, where he worked with Dr. W.J. Kroll on original reactive metal reduction process and developed process to produce zirconium oxide using sulfate precipitation. Read More

Standard and Poor's Downgrade ushers in greater uncertainty.

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement regarding Standard and Poor's decision to strip the U.S. of its AAA rating. According to Timmons, this downgrade by just 1 of 3 agencies is troubling news for manufacturers because higher interest rates are on the horizon. Higher borrowing costs will have ripple effect throughout entire economy. Most notably, they will hinder recovery in the housing market, which has a direct impact on manufacturing. Read More
