Moisture Conditioning Standard looks at compacted asphalt.

ASTM International Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials is working on ASTM WK32764, Practice for Moisture Conditioning Compacted Asphalt Mixture Samples by Using Hydrostatic Pore Pressure. This proposed moisture conditioning method for compacted asphalt samples is time-efficient and allows for simulation of field conditions. Testing device described in ASTM WK32764 emulates action of vehicle tire on wet pavement via generated pore pressure inside compacted asphalt sample. Read More

Jerry Olson wins Cherry Award from IEEE.

Jerry Olson, a physicist from NREL who was a pioneer in multi-junction solar cells for use in outer space and on Earth has received the prestigious Cherry Award, which is named in honor of William R. Cherry, a founder of the photovoltaic community. Olson opened the door for multi-junction solar cells by showing that a top cell of GaInP and a bottom cell of GaAs can capture and convert photons more efficiently into electricity than previous attempts at using other materials. ANSI Chosen as Accreditor for Health Information Technology Certifications.

Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) selected ANSI as ONC-Approved Accreditor for Permanent Certification Program for Health Information Technology. Program seeks to enhance certification of health information technology in U.S. by increasing comprehensiveness, transparency, reliability, and efficiency of current processes used for certification of EHR technology. Transportation Plan addresses gridlock and air pollution in Los Angeles.

Released by Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation and Environmental Defense Fund, "Vision Los Angeles" is a consensus action plan designed to improve transportation access and mobility, and make housing and transportation more affordable, while improving air quality and reducing greenhouse gas pollution. Analysis of plan by transportation consulting firm found that improving transit as proposed in document would lead to greater access to tens of thousands of jobs throughout County. Read More

ASTM Standard provides reference materials for kinetic parameters.

Users of standards involving kinetic parameters need reference materials to qualify individual laboratories and to validate procedures and software. Developed by Subcommittee E27.02 on Thermal Stability and Condensed Phases, ASTM E2781 will provide such parameters to accommodate apparatus configurations and kinetic models. Kinetic parameters, such as activation energy and pre-exponential factor, are used to estimate lifetime of products and to assess thermal safety of high-energy chemicals. Read More

Proposed ASTM Standard covers relative weights of body armor.

Proposed standard, ASTM WK31929, Test Method for Areal Density Measurement of an Armour Panel, will provide consistent way of comparing the relative weights of different body armor designs used in production of protective vests for law enforcement and correction personnel. Once approved, standard will allow manufacturers to accurately document their armor designs and give purchasing agents and end users a better understanding of relative weights when they are making purchasing decisions. Feds Launch Action Plan to protect people from radon.

US EPA joined forces with several other agencies and institutions to help save lives and create healthier home and school environments. Plan brings together commitments that help to reduce exposure to radon and protect health by leveraging and advancing existing state, local, and national programs. According to EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, Federal Radon Action Plan will raise awareness about radon threat in homes as well as take steps to mitigate said hazard. Read More

Commerce Department requests comments on cybersecurity report.

Department of Commerce's Internet Policy Task Force issued Federal Register Notice requesting comments on the report it published entitled "Cybersecurity, Innovations and the Internet Economy." Report proposes voluntary codes of conduct to strengthen cybersecurity of companies that rely on Internet to do business, but are not part of critical infrastructure sector. Conducted jointly by PTDA and Cleveland Research Company, PTDA Business Index indicated that 1Q2011 was the fourth consecutive quarter for business growth among PTDA members. With a reading of 85.5, first quarter results show that the power transmission/motion control industry expanded at a faster pace compared with 4Q2010 when the index was at 73.4. Read More

Metalforming Companies anticipate steady business conditions.

According to June 2011 PMA Business Conditions Report, 25% of participants forecast an improvement in economic activity during next 3 months, up from 23% in May, and 50% predict that activity will remain unchanged, compared to 55% last month. About 25% report that activity will decline, up from 22% in May. Metalforming companies also expect little change in incoming orders during next 3 months, with 30% predicting an increase in orders, 44% anticipating no change, and 26% predicting decrease. Read More
