AEM Urges Congress to responsibly rebuild infrastructure.

In meeting with Senators at US Capitol, AEM President Dennis Slater called on Congress to rebuild America's infrastructure and actively pursue innovative approaches to finance such critical investment without increasing deficit. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Senator Mark Begich organized this meeting to let Senators and leaders from business, labor, and state government strategize about how to work together to advance infrastructure investment legislation in Congress this year. ASABE adopts 4 ISO milking machine standards.

ASABE has nationally adopted, with deviations, 4 international milking machine standards. They include ANSI/ASABE AD3918:2007, Milking machine installations -Vocabulary; ANSI/ASABE AD6690:2007, Milking machine installations - Mechanical tests; ANSI/ASABE AD5707:2007, Milking machine installations - Construction and performance; and ANSI/ASABE AD20966:2007, Automatic milking installations - Requirements and testing. Deviations recognize areas in which US practices differ from those described by ISO. Read More

North American Business Conditions Advance while gains slow.

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions topped 50 point mark for seventh consecutive month in May. While this signals continued business environment improvement, EBCI has slipped over last few months. Index measured 52.3 in May, which is down from 57.1 in April and year-to-date high of 69.6 in February. EBCI for future North American conditions also dipped in May, declining to 81.8 from 85.7. Mortars and Grouts Committee presents Award of Merit.

ASTM International Committee C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry recognized Margaret Thomson, Ph.D. with ASTM Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow. Cited reasons for this honor included Thomson's leadership and commitment to standards development for said committee, especially concerning historic mortars. In addition to being C12 member-at-large, Thomson also serves as vice chairman of Committee C07 on Lime and chairman of Subcommittee C07.06 on Physical Tests. Read More

SIA and AIA welcome proposed satellite export control amendment.

May 27, 2011

More than a decade ago, Congress passed legislation that required all commercial satellites, satellite components, associated technical data, and related ground equipment to be treated as "munitions" for export licensing purposes. SIA and AIA welcome a proposed amendment to H.R. 1540, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, that would authorize the president to remove satellites and related components from U.S. Munitions List. Ventilation Software evaluates natural cooling options for buildings.

With NIST's free Climate Suitability Tool, designers of ventilation systems for "green" commercial buildings can evaluate whether local climate is suitable for cooling prospective building with natural ventilation or if it requires hybrid system that supplies supplemental cooling capacity. Program incorporates algorithm that crunches hourly weather data, downloaded from annual datasets for U.S. localities, and uses standardized criteria for rating comfort of building occupants. Job Opportunities at Dow linked to robotics.

Dow Chemical of Midland, MI has embraced robotics and automation in the making of new solar panel roof shingles, and the company now employs people who lost their jobs when the automotive sector downsized. That is part of the story depicted in a May 11, 2011 CBS report, titled "Dow Chemical's solar-powered jobs plan." ELFA releases Monthly Leasing and Finance Index for April.

According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, overall new business volume for April was $5.1 billion, up 11% compared to same period in 2010. Compared against March volume, April volume decreased 18%. Receivables over 30 days decreased to 3.3% in April from 3.5% in March, and declined by 9% compared to same period in 2010. Charge-offs also decreased, from 1.3 % in March to 0.8 % in April. New credit application approvals increased slightly to 76% in April from revised 75% in March. Read More

ANSI seeks comments on proposed common elements of ISO MSS.

ISO Technical Management Board Joint Technical Coordination Group has released a report containing recommendations for common elements to be included across all ISO management systems standards. These elements include high-level structure, identical clause titles, consistent text and terms, and standard definitions. Partnering with University of Phoenix (UoP), The Manufacturing Institute (TMI) awarded one full-tuition undergraduate or master's degree scholarship at UoP for each of 20 qualified individuals. Scholarship, offered to those already employed in manufacturing, lets workers pursue education needed to advance their skills in 21st century manufacturing workplace.
