Revenue-Neutral Transportation Proposal moves beyond gas tax.

On July 27 at 2:00 pm EST, Jack Schenendorf and AEM will introduce and discuss their proposal for a transportation funding solution to fill the gap left by current gas tax, without adding to the federal debt or deficit. They will be joined by AEM board members and manufacturing business executives from CNH Construction Equipment Inc. and Terex Corporation who will discuss their support of the proposal and the need for infrastructure investment. FABTECH 2011 Attendance is expected to be largest ever.

In Chicago, IL from November 14-17, FABTECH 2011 is projected to host 32,000 attendees with unlimited opportunities for them to network, learn, and see latest metal fabrication products and technologies. FABTECH show manager John Catalano stated that "Registration is up and we are on track to fill nearly a half million net square feet of exhibit space with more than 1,200 exhibitors." Proposed ASTM Standard covers methane hazard mitigation.

Developed by Subcommittee E50.02 on Real Estate Assessment and Management, ASTM WK32621 will enable users to determine whether or not a real estate site has a methane hazard that needs to be mitigated. According to John Sepich, president of Brownfield Subslab and chairman of task group developing ASTM WK32621, proposed standard should allow cost savings where no mitigation is necessary and should address extraordinary mitigation measures where the hazard is severe. Posted by NIST, latest internationally recommended values of fundamental constants of nature show strengthening electromagnetic force, weakening gravity, and more clearly defined sizing for smallest quantum of energy. CODATA task group is preparing full report on 2010 adjustments which will include recommendations for future measurements. Plan to adopt fully constant-based System of Units (SI) is being voted upon this October by General Conference on Weights and Measures. Read More

ASHRAE Seeks to Clearly Define energy use intensity.

ASHRAE is working to define one clear, logical metric to move building industry towards producing net zero energy buildings by 2030. Forum seeking input on energy target initiative was held at ASHRAE's 2011 Annual Conference in Montreal. Also, ASHRAE developed public policy brief asking Congress to foster collaboration among U.S. Department of Energy, NIST, U.S. EPA, and ASHRAE to establish single objective definition of energy use intensity (EUI) for design of commercial buildings. Plant Operators talk acetylene with Welding and Gases Today.

When the supply of calcium carbide unexpectedly came under strain this spring, gases and welding distributors' emergency planning was put to the test. To handle the challenge of supply and avoid an acetylene shortage, many distributors looked to import calcium carbide from overseas. Developed by Subcommittee D01.53 on Coil Coated Metal, ASTM WK30920 will address test panel preparation and rating specifically for corrosion testing of building projects. Standardization of test panel configurations and ratings would allow benchmark comparisons across broad range of products that includes substrates, pretreatments, and coatings. Once approved, producers can use standard to develop new products, and users can employ it to verify and compare product performance. Read More

ASTM Standard addresses calibration of rotational rheometers.

Developed by Subcommittee E37.08 on Rheology, proposed ASTM WK33687 will help standardize calibration of rotational rheometers to obtain accurate normal force measurements, and will be used by both producers and end users of rotational rheometers. Normal force measurements provide an indication of the normal stresses generated in a material undergoing deformation and can be used to characterize material viscoelasticity as well as for quality control. NIST Test measures key properties of polymer thin films.

Researchers at NIST have demonstrated a measurement technique that determines 3 fundamental mechanical properties of near-nanoscale films. The technique, which highlights the challenge of making mechanical measurements on an object with at least one dimension comparable to the size of a virus, should enable better design and engineering for a variety of thin-film technologies, particularly reverse-osmosis membranes for water purification. Long Nanotube Arrays may help measure terahertz laser power.

NIST researchers have found dense arrays of extra-long carbon nanotubes absorb nearly all light of long wavelengths, making them promising coatings for prototype detectors for measuring terahertz laser power. Called VANTA (vertically aligned carbon nanotube array), coating exhibits several desirable properties: it's easy to handle, is dark and reflects almost no light, and absorbs and releases heat quickly compared to other black coatings.
