Standards will reduce mercury discharges from dental offices.

October 2, 2014

EPA proposed standards under Clean Water Act to cut discharge of dental amalgam to the environment. Studies show about half the mercury that enters Publicly Owned Treatment Works comes from dental offices. Mercury can then make its way into environment in a number of ways, including discharge to water bodies. Proposed rule would require all affected dentists to cut dental amalgam discharges to level achievable through use of best available technology and other Best Management Practices. Read More

EPA releases Great Lakes Restoration Action Plan.

U.S. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy released a new Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Action Plan that lays out steps that federal agencies will take during next 5 years to protect water quality and restore the largest surface fresh water system in the world. There will be a major focus on preventing and controlling invasive species, reducing nutrient runoff that contributes to harmful and nuisance algal blooms, and restoring habitat to protect native species. SPE appoints Russell C. Broome as Managing Director.

October 2, 2014

Russell Broome began his career as a plastics engineer focused on product design, manufacturing, and project management. This led to roles in sales and marketing, as well as global business development. Most recently he worked as an engineer in a purchasing function focused on strategic sourcing for plastics at TE Connectivity. Broome is a long-term and honored service member of SPE with 20 years of volunteer leadership, ultimately serving as President of the Society in 2011–2012. Read More

BIO Paper indicates EPA RFS inaction is increasing GHG emissions.

Issued by BIO, "Estimated GHG Increase from Obama Administration Inaction on the 2014 RFS" indicates increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are likely result of EPA inaction regarding finalization of 2014 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) rules. Citing EPA's proposed reduction biofuel use, which has yet to be finalized, and increased transportation demand, BIO's Brent Erickson urged administration to finalize 2014 RFS using biofuel production-based methodology. AIA Joins Organizations to address fuel efficiency, emissions.

AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey expressed pride in AIA joining other civil aviation organizations in advancing goals that improve air transportation fuel efficiencies and assist in reaching carbon-neutral growth by 2020. Through International Coordinating Council for Aerospace Industries Associations (ICCAIA), AIA worked in partnership with others, under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), to develop meaningful CO2 standard for new civil aviation aircraft. NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA is partnering with Raymond A. Mason School of Business and Alan B. Miller Entrepreneurship Center at College of William & Mary in nearby Williamsburg, VA to obtain business and commercialization studies for NASA-developed technologies. Unmanned Systems take flight at 2015 International CES.

During the 2015 International CES®, Consumer Electronics Association will debut the Unmanned Systems Marketplace, which highlights the burgeoning technology in drones, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and other unmanned systems controlled by onboard computers or remotely from the ground. Appearing at Resources for the Future (RFF), EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy began speaking by recounting science's discovery of harm being done to Earth's ozone layer and solutions fostered by American industry's innovation. EPA Helps Five State Capitals develop green infrastructure.

EPA will provide technical assistance to help Austin, TX; Carson City, NV.; Columbus, OH; Pierre, SD; and Richmond, VA develop green infrastructure that will contribute to greener neighborhoods and increase resiliency to climate change impacts. Recipients were selected by EPA for 2014 Greening America's Capitals program via national competition. World PCB Production in 2013 estimated at $59.4 billion.

According to IPC’s World PCB Production Report for Year 2013, world market for PCBs declined estimated 2.2% in real terms in 2013, although real growth in North America was positive at 0.8%. Data show that worldwide flexible circuit market grew in 2013, while rigid PCB market declined. Report also shows China's slowing production growth and Japan's fall from second place in list of top 10 PCB-producing countries to fourth place. Thailand and Vietnam experienced highest growth in PCB production. Read More

EPA Grants aim to reduce diesel emissions at ports.

EPA announced availability of up to $5 million in grant funding to establish clean diesel projects aimed at reducing emissions from marine and inland water ports located in areas of poor air quality. This is the second grant competition to focus on reducing emissions at ports under the Diesel Emission Reduction Act. Projects may include drayage trucks, marine engines, locomotives, and cargo handling equipment at marine or inland water ports. Read More
