Annual PACK Solutions Challenge deems CalPoly first place winner.

Presented by PMMI Foundation, PACK Solutions Challenge competition tasked participating students attending PACK EXPO with developing one packaging solution for fictional company Innovative Pharmaceuticals Inc. and its fast-dissolving OTC product. Teammates Nick Abbatelli, Rebecca Kisch, Jeff Norton, and Patrick Salibi from CalPoly will share $4,000 scholarship prize for taking first place. Michigan State's team placed second, and Rutgers University placed third. Read More

NREL Fills Leadership Role at National Wind Technology Center.

Dr. Daniel Laird will join Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on October 12 as director of National Wind Technology Center (NWTC). Expressing excitement for joining NWTC's research team, Laird said he "looks forward to working with the wind energy and water power teams to deliver the next generation of clean, reliable, and cost-effective power generation technologies." EPA Limits Toxic Pollutants from steam electric power plants.

Based on readily available technologies used in industry, final Steam Electric Effluent Limitation Guidelines reinforce ongoing trend towards cleaner, more modern plants. Standards provide flexibility in implementation via phased-in approach. This finalized rule by U.S. EPA will reduce discharge of mercury, arsenic, lead, and selenium into America's waterways from steam electric power plants by 1.4 billion pounds annually as well as reduce water withdrawal by 57 billion gallons per year. ANSI/NEMA Standard covers strain type porcelain insulators.

NEMA published ANSI/NEMA C29.4-2015 American National Standard for Wet-Process Porcelain Insulators—Strain Type. Standard covers insulators used in the transmission and distribution of electric energy, and is used by electric power utility companies, public utilities, and manufacturers of high-voltage electrical products. In this revision, changes have been made to sampling sizes, glaze and color requirements, units of measurement, and marking and packing requirements. Read More

San Francisco 49ers tackle drone safety.

Working with the FAA, the NFL's San Francisco 49ers recently became the first professional sports franchise to record a video reminding everyone to abide by laws covering personal drone use. The video, which will be featured on the 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium scoreboard once during each home game, features Defensive Safety Eric Reid asking people to fly their unmanned aircraft safely. North American PCB Book-to-Bill Ratio reaches 5-year high.

According to IPC's North American Printed Circuit Board Statistical Program, year-over-year sales and order growth continued in August and book-to-bill ratio climbed to 1.13, its highest level in more than 5 years. Total North American PCB shipments increased 1.5% in August 2015 compared to August 2014. Year-to-date shipment growth stood at -0.1, reflecting negative sales growth rates seen earlier this year. Compared to previous month, PCB shipments were up 3.6%. Read More

On October 1, more than 230 members of the standards and conformity assessment community gathered in Washington DC for the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day 2015. Exhibition, reception, and dinner marking the occasion focused on the theme "Standards – The World’s Common Language." Festivities included presentation of the Ronald H. Tractor Supply Company to resolve Clean Air Act violations.

October 6, 2015

Settlement with Tractor Supply Company Inc. and Tractor Supply Company of Texas L.P. resolves allegations that the companies imported and sold more than 28,000 ATVs, off-highway motorcycles, and engines that did not comply with federal Clean Air Act certification and emission information labeling requirements. Under settlement, company will implement compliance plan to prevent future violations and mitigation projects to reduce air pollution. Company will also pay $775,000 civil penalty. Read More

NAM Issues Statement on conclusion of final TPP deal.

After final round of Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, NAM's Jay Timmons noted "The latest weak jobs report and the disappointing growth in the United States and globally" as indicators of "the urgent need" to open new markets for manufacturers. He said TPP agreement could reverse trends provided it "achieves the priorities that the NAM has fought hard for years to accomplish." EPA Updates Standards to increase farmer safety.

October 6, 2015

EPA announced increased protections for 2 million U.S. agricultural workers and their families. Changes to Agricultural Worker Protection Standard reduce risk of injury or illness resulting from contact with pesticides on farms and in forests, nurseries, and greenhouses. Provisions include annual safety training, prohibiting children under 18 from handling pesticides, and ensuring awareness of protections afforded under this action and necessary tools to protect against pesticide exposure. Resource Center provides transportation infrastructure options.

Through cooperative agreement, AASHTO is working with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to establish Build America Transportation Investment Center (BATIC) Institute: An AASHTO Center for Excellence. It will help state DOTs and other agencies better utilize solutions to finance transportation projects and safeguard taxpayers' investments.
