IR Digital Holography lets firefighters see through flames.

A team of Italian researchers has developed an imaging technique that uses infrared digital holography to peer through chaotic conflagrations and capture potentially lifesaving and otherwise hidden details. By employing specialized lens-free technique, researchers created system that can cope with flood of radiation from environments filled with flames as well as smoke. AIA Vows to Fight Sequestration and urges action.

"Despite our extreme disappointment that sequestration was not averted," said AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey, "we are by no means giving up the fight." Continuing Resolution for funding federal agencies through current fiscal year expires March 27, and Blakey identified that as next opportunity for Congress and President Obama to "halt the crisis that our industry has highlighted for nearly two years." NAM International Economic Policy Committee Chairman, Executive Committee Member, and Ball Corporation Chairman David Hoover issued statement on the Obama Administration’s trade agenda. According to Hoover, strong and robust exports are critical to competitiveness of manufacturers in the U.S. Action is needed to ensure successful results as soon as possible in the ongoing Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations and in new talks with the European Union. HI Names Arnold Sdano as 2012 Member of the Year.

Hydraulic Institute (HI) bestowed 2012 Member of the Year award upon Arnold Sdano at 2013 Annual Meeting. Selected by HI Board of Directors for distinguishing himself by level and intensity of his involvement with HI and for advancing HI's technical work, Sdano has been active participant in HI for 21+ years and instrumental in shaping direction of future standards work within HI. BIO praises U.S. Senate for passing PAHPRA.

BIO lauds Senate for passing H.R. 307, the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Reauthorization Act (PAHPRA) by unanimous vote. According to BIO's President and CEO Jim Greenwood, "the bipartisan legislation provides needed clarity for the regulatory process for medical countermeasures at the FDA and strongly encourages the agency to work with product sponsors to develop regulatory management plans, provide technical assistance, and help solve regulatory and scientific issues." Developing Textile Wear Test Standard is open to contributions.

Interested parties are invited to join ongoing development of ASTM International standard ASTM D3181, which provides data that helps predict expected wear performance of various textiles in end-use conditions. Content includes statistical methods for test design and analysis of data as well as standard procedures for evaluation of textiles. Uses include determining comparative performance; determining suitability in different end uses, and wear effect evaluation and comparison. Read More
