Air Toxics Standards Timeline set for boilers, incinerators.

June 28, 2011

As part of filing with U.S. Court of Appeals for DC Circuit, U.S. EPA set schedule for issuing updated air toxics standards for boilers and specific solid waste incinerators. Agency will propose standards to be reconsidered by end of October 2011 to ensure they are based on best available data and public has ample opportunity to provide additional input and information. Urban Waters Federal Partnership (UWFP) seeks to stimulate regional and local economies, create local jobs, improve quality of life, and protect Americans' health by revitalizing urban waterways in under-served communities. As federal union comprised of 11 agencies, UWFP will focus initial efforts on 7 pilot locations. ASHRAE Standard 188P, Prevention of Legionellosis Associated with Building Water Systems, specifies requirements to prevent legionellosis associated with building water systems. Open for public review until July 25, this proposed standard practice helps facility managers and owners understand how to apply available information on Legionella effectively in order to prevent cases of legionellosis associated with building water systems. ASTM Standard helps detect chemical weapon agent breakdown.

ASTM International Committee E54 on Homeland Security Applications developed single-laboratory validated standard ASTM E2787, Test Method for Determination of Thiodiglycol in Soil Using Pressurized Fluid Extraction Followed by Single Reaction Monitoring Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). In wake of chemical weapon attack, ASTM E2787 could be used to detect chemical weapon agent breakdown product to identify agent and ensure proper cleanup of involved area. Read More

ASTM WK32336 plastic piping standard provides minimum requirements for PVC gasketed sanitary and storm drainage sewer basins and fittings. For specific application, users need to have confidence that the product they are purchasing meets minimum requirements for watertightness and structural integrity. Products must also maintain sufficient manufacturing tolerances to enable proper and easy connection of these fabricated units to pipelines. Read More

Intel Foundation funds STEM infused Gateway Academy.

SME Education Foundation has provided funding to LEED (Linking Education and Economic Development) for 5 Gateway Academy summer camps being held in the Sacramento Region thanks to $20,000 gift from Intel Foundation. Gateway Academy summer camp introduces 6th-8th grade students to drafting and graphic design, and allows them to use real lab equipment in team environment, build robotic vehicles and gliders, and learn about eco-design, manufacturing, and alternative energy. Proposed change to ASHRAE Standard encourages efficient fan design.

Open for advisory public review until July 10, 2011, proposed addendum u to ASNI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2010, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, would add reference to Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) International's Standard 205-10, Energy Efficiency Classification for Fans. This would require fan efficiency requirements to be classified based on fan efficiency grades. Read More

U.S. EPA has identified 7 case studies to help inform the assessment of potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water resources. Two of the 7 sites were selected as prospective case studies where EPA will monitor key aspects of hydraulic fracturing process throughout lifecycle of well. ASTM A1062, Specification for Steel Castings Sampling, covers inspection requirements agreed upon by purchaser and producer of steel castings for sample castings prior to production of order. According to Albert Melilli, independent consulting metallurgical engineer and member of Committee A01.18, standard is notable for simplicity in facilitating purchaser and user agreement on sampling plan. Three R&D 100 Awards were earned by NREL for solar research.

Technique to turn silicon into ink, faster solar cell assessment method, and more efficient furnace for heating solar cells, all developed by U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), were named among this year's most significant innovations by R&D Magazine. Proposed Tetrad Testing Standard addresses sensory analysis.

ASTM International Committee E18 on Sensory Evaluation is developing ASTM WK32980, Test Methods for Sensory Analysis - Tetrad Test, which would allow companies to make more informed decisions about potential product changes. This proposed standard specifically addresses problems that occur when resources are not available for proper size test needed to reliably detect differences.
