NASA releases book about psychology of human spaceflight.

Titled "Psychology of Space Exploration: Contemporary Research in Historical Perspective," NASA's collection of essays from space psychologists examines psychological factors that affect astronauts during space travel. Psychologists place recent research in historical context by looking at changes in space missions and psychosocial science over past 50 years. Different coping skills and sensibilities are now necessary to communicate across cultural boundaries and deal with interpersonal conflicts. Read More

BIO says biofuels tax compromise is a good first step.

BIO has sent a letter to Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), and John Thune (R-S.D.) thanking them for supportive, stable policies for advanced biofuels in the announced deal on immediate repeal of the Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit. However, BIO is concerned that the inclusion of annual caps on the cellulosic production tax credit will result in additional investor uncertainty that could limit effectiveness of program in attracting project financing. ANSI Calls for Nominations for 3-year PCAC terms.

Nominations of national experts in fields of personnel certification, accreditation, and policy development are being sought for ANSI's Personnel Certification Accreditation Committee (PCAC). Duties include creating recommended policies/procedures for PCAP, determining accreditation status of certification bodies, and providing input and advice to ANSI staff regarding operational issues. Nominations must be received by August 16, 2011 and are for 3-year terms that begin January 1, 2012. Read More

Energy Star Requirements updated for dishwashers and furnaces.

July 20, 2011

Effective Jan 20, 2012, residential dishwashers meeting new Energy Star requirements will be 10-30% more energy efficient than conventional models and about 8% more efficient than dishwashers that met previous Energy Star requirement. Furnaces that meet new requirements for southern half of U.S. will be up to 12% more energy efficient than baseline units, while qualified furnaces in northern half of U.S. including Canada will be up to 16% more energy efficient than baseline models. Winners of America's Transportation Awards, held at annual meeting of Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, included projects that reduced congestion, shortened project delivery times, improved access to rural communities, and increased commuting safety. AIA welcomes administration's proposed rule to relieve low-risk technology exports of burdensome and unnecessary restrictions. Rule proposes that after appropriate interagency review and consensus, technologies with low or no military or intelligence sensitivity will be moved off of U.S. Munitions List to Commerce Control List. Inc. in Talladega, AL, received ASTM Award of Merit and title of fellow from ASTM International Committee C11 on Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems. Seto of Belcan Engineering Corp. has been honored with ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow for his outstanding contributions to Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and for his work as chairman of Subcommittee D02.J0 on Aviation Fuels. ASTM D7615/D7615M, Practice for Open-Hole Fatigue Response of Polymer Matrix Composite Laminates, provides guidance for development of open-hole fatigue data for material specifications, R/D, material design allowables, and quality assurance. CFL Index Continues Retreat at beginning of 2011.

In Q1 of 2011, NEMA compact fluorescent (CFL) lamps index declined for fourth consecutive quarter. Registered reading of 180.8 marks decline of 16.8% on year-over-year basis. Incandescent lamp shipments showed increase of 6.4% over previous quarter, and first quarter reading of 57.0 remained unchanged from same period of previous year. Incandescent lamps remained dominant, while CFLs gave back market share gained over last 3 years by decreasing to 21.0%. Read More

Study of E-AB Aircraft Safety seeks pilot, builder input.

NTSB study of accidents involving Experimental Amateur-Built (E-AB) aircraft will evaluate safety of this growing segment of general aviation. In support of this project, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) will host Web-based survey for E-AB aircraft owners. PMI President Jack Krecek has selected Tim Doyle of Amerikam, Inc. as co-chair of PMI's Member Service Committee to serve alongside existing co-chair Rick Reles. As quality assurance manager and ISO management representative for Amerikam, Doyle oversees development, implementation, and maintenance of the quality management system.
