Released by Equipment Leasing and Finance Foundation, March 2013 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) collects leadership data and reports qualitative assessment of prevailing business conditions and expectations for future. Overall confidence in equipment finance market is 58.0. Compared to February's 58.7, new number reflects leveling optimism after 2 consecutive increases. PMA releases Business Conditons Report for March.

According to March 2013 PMA Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies expect steady business conditions during next 3 months. Report shows that 36% of participants predict economic activity will improve, while 58% believe activity will remain unchanged. Also, 46% forecast increase in orders, while 43% expect no change, and 11% predict decrease. While 42% of participants report that shipping levels are above 3 months ago, 42% report that shipping levels are the same and 16% report decrease. Read More

Initial Data shows significant gains in fuel economy for 2012.

EPA released its annual report that tracks fuel economy of vehicles sold in the U.S., underscoring major increases made in efficiency of vehicles Americans drive, reducing oil consumption and cutting carbon emissions. According to report, EPA estimates that between 2007–2012 fuel economy values increased by 16% while carbon dioxide emissions have decreased by 13%. In 2012 alone, report indicates significant one year increase of 1.4 mpg for cars and trucks. Gray-Fieldbus Foundation Scholarship Fund, which establishes perpetual $250,000 endowment fund providing scholarships to students seeking a career in the industrial automation profession. Massachusetts paves the way for more renewable energy.

March 21, 2013

Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities issued an Order calling for several changes to its model interconnection tariff for distributed generation. DPU adopted most of the consensus recommendations suggested by the Distributed Generation Working Group in its September 2012 report and red-lined tariff. IREC commends the efforts of the DPU and the DGWG, which should encourage even more renewable energy growth in Massachusetts. Read More

NIST Microscope measures nanomagnet property.

Researchers at NIST have developed microscope able to view and measure important but elusive property of nanoscale magnets used in advanced, experimental form of digital memory. Heterodyne magneto-optic microwave microscope, or H-MOMM, can measure collective dynamics of electrons’ spins in individual magnets as small as 100 nm in diameter. Instrument has already demonstrated its utility with initial results that suggest how to limit power consumption in future computer memories. Read More

Construction Materials Prices increased 1.3% in February.

According to March 14 Producer Price Index (PPI) report, USA's construction material prices rose 1.3% in February. Construction materials prices overall remain 2% higher than one year ago, and nonresidential construction materials prices rose 1.4% and 1% respectively compared to last month and year. Among factors at work, ABC's Anirban Basu named globally rising key asset and other prices due, in part, to "accelerating global economic growth and accommodative monetary policy." Read More
