Equipment Leasing Index shows overall growth in new business.

ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) for August shows overall new business volume as $5.7 billion, which is up 33% from volume of same period in 2010. Volume is unchanged from previous month, and year-to-date cumulative new business volume is up 25%. All credit quality metrics showed improvement, with receivables over 30 days decreasing to 2.5% and charge-offs down as well. Credit standards relaxed, as number of lease applications approved increased to 77.6%. Read More

New Chinese 2D Bar Code has been announced by AIM Inc.

Han Xin Code 2D matrix symbology, made up of square modules arranged in overall square pattern, features finder patterns that assist in location of position, size, and inclination. In addition to capability to encode double-byte Chinese characters (GB18030), symbology can efficiently encode numeric and ASCII characters as well as octet bytes such as graphic/audio information. PMA releases Business Conditions Report for September 2011.

According to September 2011 Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies anticipate steady business conditions during next 3 months. Report shows that 54% of participants expect economic activity to remain unchanged, up from 47% in August, and 47% expect anticipate no change in incoming orders, compared to 38% last month. However, 33% percent of participants report that average daily shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago, up from 27% in August. Read More

Multiple-Hazard Risks exceed current building code coverage.

NIST researchers warn combination of seismic and wind hazards increase risk of structural damage to as much as twice level implied in current building codes, which only consider natural hazards individually. Published in Journal of Structural Engineering, Dat Duthinh, Emil Simiu, and Chiara Crosti show design limits, even taking into account that multiple hazards almost never occur simultaneously, and provide method to assess such risks using common metric of structural resistance. The MHEDA Journal Online profiles EOAT fabricator/assembler.

The MHEDA Journal Online's 3rd Quarter issue profiles Dan Lucas of Bastian Solutions, who works in robotics division and is responsible for fabrication and assembly of End of Arm Tool (EOAT). According to Lucas, he could be working on "assembly, fabrication or electrical components" depending on the day's requirements. As supporting sponsor of Solar Decathlon 2011, ASHRAE will host 2 workshops: first focusing on updates on building design standards, and second focusing on renewable energy options for homeowners. ASTM D7588, Guide for FT-IR Fingerprinting of a Non-Aqueous Liquid Paint as Supplied in the Manufacturer's Container, standardizes technique for collecting IR spectra of non-aqueous liquid paints directly out of their cans. According to members of ASTM Committees D01 and D33, this guide fosters collection of "good quality reproducible spectra of liquid paint samples straight out of the can without the need for time-consuming separation of components." QR codes and their Microsoft counterpart are becoming a part of the sales process. ASTM International Committee E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials, and Alternative Control Methods invites interested parties to join biorationals task group, which has primary purpose of defining products being marketed as biorationals. Definitions are needed to eliminate confusing terminology and, in some cases, overlap of terminology applied to same material. Asbestos Abatement Contractor sentenced to 6 years in prison.

U.S. District Court Judge Charles J. Siragusa sentenced Keith Gordon-Smith of Rochester, NY, to 6 years in prison for knowingly violating Clean Air Act and making false statements to a federal inspector. Gordon-Smith hired workers who had no training in asbestos removal and who did not know they were being exposed to asbestos while removing copper pipes. Workers were not provided with any protective clothing or respirators and wore asbestos-contaminated clothing back to their homes and families. Read More

Alternative to ASHRAE Standard 62.1 proposed.

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2010, Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, sets minimum ventilation rates and other requirements for commercial and institutional buildings. Some users of Standard 62.1 believe that ventilation rate procedure is too complicated, and 62.1 committee agrees that application of multiple-zone recirculating system equations can be complex.
