AIA presents first Wright-Curtiss Legacy Award.

AIA presented its Wright-Curtiss Legacy Award to U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga) in recognition of his longtime support of the aerospace and defense industry. Sen. Chambliss serves on Senate Armed Services Committee, is vice chairman of Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and co-chaired Senate Aerospace Caucus. ICCAIA Supports HAAPS Consortium seeking alternatives to Halon.

According to its chairman Marion C. Blakey, International Coordinating Council of Aerospace Industries Association (ICCAIA) supports international aerospace community in seeking to replace Halon as aircraft fire extinguishing agent. This follows formation of Halon Alternatives for Aircraft Propulsion Systems (HAAPS) consortium and is in preparation for imposed ban on new production of Halon by international protocol regarding substances that deplete Earth's ozone layer. BIO extended its deadline for Rosalind Franklin Award for Leadership in Industrial Biotechnology, which honors one outstanding woman in industrial biotechnology and bioprocessing field. DOT and FAA propose new rules for small UAS.

FAA has proposed framework of regulations that would allow routine use of certain small unmanned aircraft systems in today's aviation system, while maintaining flexibility to accommodate future technological innovations. Proposal offers safety rules for UAS under 55 lb conducting non-recreational operations. Rule would limit flights to daylight and visual-line-of-sight operations. FAA dedicates new airport traffic control tower.

FAA has dedicated new $16.4 million airport traffic control tower at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. Tower is equipped with latest radar, communications, and weather technology, enabling air traffic controllers to continue to provide the safest, most efficient service. Facility comprises 117 ft tall airport traffic control tower topped by 525 sq-ft tower cab, and 7,200 sq-ft single-story base building that houses training rooms, administrative offices, and equipment rooms. Proposed Ozone Rule could be most expensive in U.S. history.

Update of study conducted by National Economic Research Associates (NERA) Economic Consulting and commissioned by National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) reveals that revising ozone standard from 75 ppb to 65 ppb, as proposed by EPA, could reduce GDP by $140 billion/day and carry compliance price tag of $1.1 trillion. BIO strongly supports FDA Safety over Sequestration Act.

BIO applauds Representatives Leonard Lance (R-NJ) and Anna Eshoo (D-CA) for introducing the FDA Safety Over Sequestration Act, which would exempt privately paid user fees paid to FDA from any future operation of sequestration. BIO firmly believes that preventing FDA user fees from becoming subject to future periods of sequestration is critical to protecting patients and supporting public health, and calls on Congress to quickly consider and pass this vital legislation. BIO applauded Senators Tom Carper and Pat Toomey for introducing COMPETE Act, which will spur biotech capital formation and stimulate innovative research and development. U.S. Construction Equipment Exports drop 13% in 2014.

March 3, 2015

Exports of U.S.-made construction equipment ended 2014 with a 13.2% drop compared to 2013, with a total $17.26 billion shipped to global markets. Business to Europe, South America, and Australia/Oceania was hit the hardest, according to AEM, citing U.S. Department of Commerce data it uses in global markets reports for members. Top countries buying the most U.S.-made construction machinery during 2014 (by dollar volume) were Canada, Mexico, Australia, Brazil, and South Africa. Read More

AMCA soliciting volunteers to author new standard.

AMCA is seeking volunteers to form document-creation committee to author new AMCA standard that will introduce Fan Efficiency Ratio. FER metric is a ratio of the actual fan efficiency to baseline fan efficiency, both calculated at given airflow and pressure point. Standard will introduce FER as energy efficiency metric for fans designed to encourage responsible use and drive significant and quantifiable energy savings through codes, rebate programs, and federal regulations. ELFA Economic Activity Survey shows rise in January 2015.

ELFA Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) for January 2015 shows overall new business volume at $6.7 billion, which is 12% up from January 2014 and 48% down from December. Receivables over 30 days were 1.1%, up from 1% in December and same period in 2014, while charge-offs were unchanged for tenth consecutive month at 0.2%. Also unchanged from December, credit approvals totaled 78.6%. Separately, MCI-EFI for February is 66.3 in slight rise from January's of 66.1. Read More
