NREL Demonstrates 45.7% Efficiency for concentrator solar cell.

Regarding its 4-junction inverted metamorphic (4J IMM) solar cell, NREL announced demonstration of 45.7% conversion efficiency at 234 suns concentration. Multijunction cell is designed for operation in concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) systems where it is possible to receive 1,000+ suns of concentrated sunlight. Efficacy is enabled due to effective control and confinement of dislocations, broadband 4-layer AR coating, metamorphic tunnel junction interconnect, and GaInP top cell performance. Read More

Berry receives 2014 Lauren D. Lyman Award.

F. Clifton Berry Jr., a long-time journalist, author, and public relations professional in aerospace and defense field, has been selected to receive 2014 Lauren D. Lyman Award for outstanding achievement in aerospace communications. Berry served in U.S. Army for more than 20 years before retiring as Lieutenant Colonel in 1975. He went on to posts as editor at variety of trade publications, including Armed Forces Journal, AIR FORCE Magazine, Air Power History, and National Defense magazine. Read More

ASTM International Committee C09 celebrates its centennial.

During its latest standards development meetings, ASTM International committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates celebrated its 100th anniversary. Speakers included past and current chairmen of C09. Work of said committee has been instrumental to success of concrete, ensuring quality, durability, and sustainability while also advancing application of new technologies in concrete industry. ASTM Develops Adjunct for resin identification codes standard.

ASTM International updated adjunct for D7611, Practice for Coding Plastic Manufactured Articles for Resin Identification. Adjunct contains graphic representations of Resin Identification Code (RIC), as molded, imprinted, or raised symbol or wording used by manufacturers to imprint on plastic products or materials. Previously only available as PDF, adjunct is available in higher resolution vector format that allows files to be enlarged or reduced with no loss to image quality. Read More

IPC Applauds Passage of RAMI Act by Congress.

IPC commended Congress for its bipartisan passage of Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation (RAMI) Act and called upon President Barack Obama to sign it into law. Enactment of said legislation, which will authorize National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI), has been top policy priority for IPC and its member companies. MCAA Offers NRTL Suggestions at OSHA Stakeholder Meeting.

On October 22, 2014, MCAA representatives, along with ~100 attendees from 50 organizations, attended OSHA Stakeholder Meeting to discuss questions and options regarding OSHA's Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) program. Presenters from 10 organizations gave their reactions to OSHA proposals and interacted with attendees on ways to improve said program. Standard covers fatigue testing of medical device fine wire.

Solid, round, fine wire is often used in devices such as catheter guide wires, stents, and containment vessels. ASTM E2948, Test Method for Conducting Rotating Bending Fatigue Tests of Solid Round Fine Wire, will be used to determine fatigue life characteristics of such wire in order to assess reliability. Test method describes procedure for performance of rotating beam fatigue tests of small diameter wire at specified life in fatigue regime where strains are predominantly and nominally elastic. BIO Says EPA Must Improve Renewable Fuel Standard administration.

According to BIO, EPA delays in administering Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) generate uncertainty for advanced biofuel industry and undercut investment. BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood cited EPA's failure to issue final 2014 RFS rule and other administrative delays as misconstrued as indicative of broken program but reassured that that same program has worked to spur innovation and growth in biofuels space and subsequently reduce U.S. GHG emissions and reliance on foreign oil.
