IREC announces changes in regulatory team.

Under continued leadership of IREC Regulatory Director Sara Baldwin Auck, IREC will be represented in state and federal regulatory matters by current key regulatory team members Sky Stanfield and Erica McConnell, both of whom moved from the law firm of Keyes, Fox and Wiedman, LLP, to the environmental, land use and government law firm Shute, Mihaly & Weinberger, LLP. W3C MathML 3.0 approved as ISO/IEC International Standard.

October 12, 2015

World Wide Web Consortium, together with Joint Technical Committee JTC 1, Information Technology of the International Organization for Standardization, and the International Electrotechnical Commission, announced approval of MathML Version 3.0 2nd Edition as an ISO/IEC International Standard (ISO/IEC 40314:2015). MathML is the markup language used in software and development tools for statistical, engineering, scientific, computational, and academic expressions of math on the Web. Read More

Chicago to host ASLA 2015 Annual Meeting and EXPO.

Scheduled for November 6–9, ASLA 2015 Annual Meeting and EXPO is expected to draw 6,000 attendees and almost 500 exhibitors. Available for download and in hard copy ANSI/NEMA C29.5-2015 American National Standard for Wet-Process Porcelain Insulators—Low- and Medium-Voltage Types covers low- and medium- voltage line-type insulators made of wet-process porcelain and used in transmission and distribution of electrical energy. BIO addresses data exclusivity provisions within TPP.

In statement, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood said BIO is disappointed in reports from Atlanta that suggest Trade Ministers have failed to include 12 years of data exclusivity for biologics in Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. BIO believes that 12 years of data exclusivity is a prerequisite to attract investment required to continue medical innovation and develop new biological cures and therapies. Failure of Asian-Pacific partners to agree to similar length of protection is short-sighted. Read More

NEMA welcomes House action on energy legislation.

October 9, 2015

NEMA welcomed passage of HR 8, the North American Energy Security and Infrastructure Act of 2015, by the House Energy and Commerce Committee by a vote of 32-20. Legislation includes NEMA-supported language which directs Department of Energy to develop a plan to establish a Strategic Transformer Reserve to store large power transformers in strategically located facilities. Bill also includes clarifications to the Energy Policy and Conservation Act. Read More

According to show owner and producer PMMI, preliminary data for the 20th anniversary of PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2015 and co-located Pharma EXPO shows 4% increase in attendance over record PACK EXPO Las Vegas set in 2013. Event welcomed nearly 29,000 attendees who came to see 2,006 exhibiting companies in 844,510 net square feet of exhibit space. FAA issues grant for replacement airport in North Dakota.

October 8, 2015

FAA announced $27 million Airport Improvement Program grant to the City of Williston, ND to purchase land to build a new airport and meet growing aviation demand by replacing Sloulin Field International Airport. Oil drilling operations have increased Williston’s population as well as passenger traffic, corporate aviation activity, and cargo operations at Sloulin Field. Expected to open in 2018, new airport will be called Williston Basin International with XWA as 3-letter airport identifier. FAA proposes $1.9 million civil penalty against SkyPan Intl.

October 8, 2015

FAA announces largest civil penalty it has proposed against a UAS operator for endangering the safety of U.S. airspace. FAA alleges that between March 21, 2012, and Dec. 15, 2014, SkyPan International, Inc. conducted 65 unauthorized operations in some of the most congested airspace and heavily populated cities, violating airspace regulations and various operating rules. Of those, 43 flew in highly restricted New York Class B airspace. These operations were illegal and not without risk. Read More

NEMA published ANSI/NEMA C29.3-2015 American National Standard for Wet-Process Porcelain Insulators—Spool Type. Standard covers insulators used in the transmission and distribution of electric energy and is used by electric power utility companies, public utilities, and manufacturers of high-voltage electrical products. NTSB Issues Second Update on British Airways engine fire.

October 8, 2015

NTSB released investigative update regarding September 8, 2015 engine fire experienced by British Airways flight 2276, a Boeing 777, during takeoff at McCarran International Airport. Investigators disassembled and documented GE90 engine at GE facility in Evandale, OH. Examination revealed one portion of stage 8-10 spool in high-pressure compressor (HPC) section failed; fracture initiated in HPC stage 8 disk web. NTSB will continue metallurgical evaluations of disk and fracture features. Read More
