EPA affirms national air quality standards for carbon monoxide.

August 16, 2011

After careful review of the science, U.S. EPA is affirming current national air quality standards for CO. Science shows that current standards protect public health, including that of those who are most susceptible, and also protect the environment. To protect against unhealthy concentrations of CO, EPA is also revising air monitoring requirements. Changes will require more focused monitoring network with CO monitors placed near roads in 52 urban areas with populations of 1 million or more. Read More

Denny McGuirk resigns as president of IPC.

After 12 years as president and CEO of IPC, Dennis P. McGuirk has resigned to accept a new position as president and CEO of SEMI, a global industry association serving the manufacturing supply chains for the microelectronic, display, and photovoltaic industries. When McGuirk joined IPC in 2000, the organization had 2,500 members with less than 25% located outside of the U.S. Today, IPC has more than 3,000 members of which 38% are located outside the U.S. Read More

AMCA revises Certified Ratings Program Operating Manual.

AMCA has revised its publication 11-03 (R2008) (Rev. 1/11), to Certified Ratings Program Operating Manual- AMCA 11-03 (R2008) (Rev. 5/11). CRP provides the buyer, user, and specifier assurance that the manufacturer's published performance ratings of air system components are reliable and accurate. Revision includes definition for "public" in section 5.1. When used with the availability of a product line catalog, public shall mean users and specifiers only. Read More

ASHRAE Assists Students via tuition scholarships.

ASHRAE is awarding over $74,000 in scholarship money for 2011-2012 school year in order to help support future generations of engineers. William Murphy, PhD, PE, and Chair of Scholarship Trustees, said "We hope that this early exposure to the industry will lead to employment opportunities in the field during and after college. EPA Seeks Input on drinking water perchlorate regulation.

U.S. EPA invites small businesses, governments, and not-for-profit organizations to participate as small entity representatives (SERs) for small business advocacy review (SBAR) Panel, which will focus on developing rule to regulate amount of perchlorate, a potentially harmful chemical, in drinking water. NTSB Makes Safety Recommendations to FAA.

NTSB Safety Recommendations address lengthening of oxygen mask hoses in cockpits of airplanes used in 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 121 operations (A-11-79). Also, recommendation A-11-80 suggests amending of Advisory Circular 120-80, "In-Flight Fires," to provide clear guidance to flight crews concerning type of breathing equipment to wear when combating cockpit fire, taking into consideration limitations of portable protective breathing equipment in both passenger and cargo operations. SPE Executive Director will steps down at end of 2011.

Susan Oderwald, who joined SPE as Deputy Executive Director in 2001 and became Executive Director in 2004, will be stepping down as Executive Director at the end of 2011. Oderwald called her time with SPE "very rewarding" but stated that it was time for her to "move on to new professional challenges." NTSB-Sponsored Championships to determine top U.S. truck drivers.

Professional truck drivers from across U.S. will head to Orlando, FL for 2011 National Truck Driving Championships (NTDC) and National Step Van Driving Championships (NSVDC). Held August 9-13, 2011, NTDC and NSVDC challenge contestants' driving skills and knowledge of safety, equipment, and industry. Competition course recreates real world obstacles: alley dock, rear/front line stop, scales stop, right/left turn, parallel parking, and straight line driving through diminishing clearance. Ralph H. Nielsen receives H.R. "Russ" Ogden Award.

Ralph H. Nielsen, a primary expert in chemistry of zirconium extraction and purification, received 2011 H.R. "Russ" Ogden Award, which honors outstanding accomplishments in science and technology of reactive and refractory metals and alloys. A graduate of Oregon State University, Nielsen began his career at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, where he worked with Dr. W.J. Kroll on original reactive metal reduction process and developed process to produce zirconium oxide using sulfate precipitation. Read More
