ANSI Accredits ICOR Education Programs under ANSI-CAP.

ANSI announced accreditation of International Consortium for Organizational Resilience (ICOR) under ANSI Certificate Accreditation Program (ANSI-CAP). According to Frank Vargo, NAM VP for International Economic Affairs, House passage of the Generalized System of Preferences bill is a positive step toward advancing U.S. competitiveness and trade leadership. It also moves closer to passing 3 pending free trade agreements with Colombia, Korea, and Panama, which will provide boost to manufacturers and create jobs. NIST Physicist to receive Junior BEC Award 2011.

Ian Spielman, NIST physicist and fellow of the Joint Quantum Institute, was selected to receive Junior BEC Award 2011 for "the first experimental realization of synthetic magnetic fields and spin-orbit couplings in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates." Technique pioneered by Spielman and his colleagues paves way for using electrically neutral atoms to explore complex natural phenomena involving charged particles in magnetic fields and may also contribute to new form of quantum computing. World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and Joint Technical Committee JTC 1, Information Technology, of ISO and IEC formally approved package of W3C Web Services technologies as ISO/IEC International Standards. According to W3C CEO Jeff Jaffe, "This is good news for ensuring that people can use the Web anywhere, on any device." Package included 8 specifications, including SOAP 1.2 along with Addressing 1.0 and Policy 1.5, which are foundation specifications for message-based service technology. Read More

NIST Scientists create hydrogen storage material.

NIST scientists have come up with new approach to problem of safely storing hydrogen in future fuel-cell-powered cars. Their idea consists of molecular scale "veins" of iron permeating grains of magnesium like a network of capillaries. According to NIST materials scientist Leo Bendersky, combination of lightweight magnesium laced with iron could rapidly absorb and release sufficient quantities of hydrogen so that grains made from the two metals could form fuel tank for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
