IMTS 2012 to show car being built live.

Emerging Technology Center at IMTS, taking place Sept 10-15, 2012, will feature a Local Motors car built live on show floor, as part of Collaborative Manufacturing section. Designs for Local Motors cars come from open source design community, and company plans to build its distribution through micro factory retailing. Additional features in ETC will include Additive Technology, and MTConnect®, the open-source communications and interconnectivity standard for manufacturing equipment and devices. Read More

Chinese-American Cabinet Secretary to give keynote at BIO China.

BIO announced Elaine L. Chao, 24th U.S. Secretary of Labor, will provide keynote address at BIO China International Conference, which will be held October 12-13 in Shanghai. Featuring key opinion leaders discussing policy and business issues, event aims to bring together biotechnology and pharmaceutical leaders to explore business opportunities with life science companies in China. Chao is first American woman of Asian descent to be appointed to a President's Cabinet in U.S. history. Read More

Papers invited for geosynthetic clay liner symposium.

Scheduled for June 29, 2012, Third Symposium on Current and Future Practices for the Testing of Multi-Component Geosynthetic Clay Liners will cover mechanical testing, peel and shear behavior, hydraulic testing, durability of multi-components, field performance, and research studies. It is the task of D35's Subcommittee D35.04 on Geosynthetic Clay Liners to identify proper tests for these newer multi-component GCLs, either by adopting/modifying existing test methods or developing new procedures. Weathering/Durability Standard covers radiometer calibration.

Standard ASTM G207, Test Method for Indoor Transfer of Calibration from Reference to Field Pyranometers, facilitates calibration of solar sensors used in accelerated testing under simulated sunlight and outdoor weathering tests as well as performance monitoring of solar energy conversion systems. Developed by Subcommittee G03.09 on Radiometry, standard targets manufacturers of solar radiometers and testing laboratories for solar energy, materials, and durability testing as primary users. NASA Begins Commercial Partnership with Alliant Techsystems.

NASA and Alliant Techsystems (ATK) of Salt Lake City, UT have agreed to collaborate on development of Liberty Launch System as part of Commercial Crew Development Round 2 activities. Unfunded Space Act Agreement, through Commercial Crew Program, outlines milestones and also allows NASA and ATK to review and discuss Liberty system requirements; safety/certification plans; computational models of rocket stage performance; and avionics architecture designs. AASHTO Applauds Senate Support of transportation investment.

September 22, 2011

AASHTO commended Senate transportation appropriations subcommittee for approving draft fiscal 2012 appropriations bill that would maintain current funding levels for highways and transit. As AASHTO's executive director, John Horsley called this "another critical step in the right direction." He also encouraged full Senate Appropriations Committee to approve this legislation and also urged Senate to pass bill "as soon as possible." Read More

NEMA Division to increase medical imaging technology exports.

NEMA's Medical Imaging and Technology Alliance has been awarded $207,140 grant from Commerce Department's International Trade Administration Market Development Cooperator Program. Award will increase exports and expand patient access to diagnostic medical imaging, radiation therapy, and radiopharmaceuticals in emerging markets. Agreement will also promote harmonization of international standards, reduce unnecessary regulation, and enhance global competitiveness of MITA member companies. Read More

ASTM Committee sponsors workshop on New Sensor Technologies.

Scheduled for Nov 16, 2011, workshop on New Sensor Technologies will provide forum to promote discourse and disseminate advances in sensor technology as it applies to fatigue, fracture, and mechanical testing, as well as present limitations of existing sensor technology. ANSI specified as accreditation body for food handlers.

Under amendment to California's Health and Safety Code, training providers issuing personnel certificates to food safety handlers in the state must be accredited by ANSI under ANSI Certificate Accreditation Program. Beginning Jan 1, 2012, food handlers may obtain food handler card only from training providers that meet ASTM E2659-09, Standard Practice for Certificate Programs. Cards allow handlers to demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to proper food handling procedures. Read More

Developed by Subcommittee E05.22 on Surface Burning, ASTM E2768 Test Method for Extended Duration Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials (30 Min. Tunnel Test) provides a more detailed and complete description of a test protocol that has been used for more than 40 years in code requirements and specifications for fire-retardant-treated wood. This test is now also used in some codes for building products that are not wood. Read More

NREL Earns Federal Award for sustainable IT practices.

In recognition of its efforts to help federal government improve its sustainable practices, U.S. Department of Energy's NREL earned 2011 Platinum-level Award from Federal Electronics Challenge (FEC). This achievement was earned by tracking lifecycle data for electronic equipment, retiring old CRT monitors, and replacing them with LCDs; ensuring environmentally friendly disposal of electronics; and reviewing/revising NREL policies to make lab IT environment more energy efficient. IPC Study forecasts growth to resume in 2012.

According to IPC's 2010-2011 Industry Analysis and Forecast for PCB Industry in North America, volume of PCB production remains flat, but sales of PCBs by North American manufacturers returned to strong growth in 2010. Sales of rigid PCBs were up 18%, while sales of flexible circuits grew 16% in 2010. A representative sample of 40 North American PCB manufacturers participated in survey, with $2.3 billion in total sales, accounting for approximately 55% of North American market. Read More

Economic Study Shows R&D Tax Credit has significant impact.

Ernst & Young's "The R&D Credit: An effective policy for promoting research spending," released by R&D Credit Coalition, shows federal research and development (R&D) credit significantly and positively impacts U.S. economy by increasing amount of research spending, jobs, and wages. In total, overall policy - existing credit plus strengthened alternative simplified credit - is estimated to increase annual private research spending by $15 billion (short-term) and $33 billion (long-term).
