Buildings Technology Report urges more detailed utility metering.

An interagency report by the Buildings Technology Research and Development Subcommittee of NSTC recommends systematic consideration of new metering technologies, called submetering, that can yield up-to-date, finely grained snapshots of energy and water usage in commercial and residential buildings to guide efficiency improvements. Report documents current state of submetering and provides relevant case studies and preliminary findings relating to submetering system costs and ROI. Read More

ANSI's final 2 accreditation workshops in 2011 will be held in Washington, DC. On December 8-9, Certificate Issuers' Accreditation Workshop will introduce American National Standard ASTM E2659-09, Standard Practice for Certificate Programs, and ANSI-CAP. Taking place December 14-15, Personnel Certification Accreditation Workshop will introduce international standard ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024, General requirements for bodies operating certification schemes for persons. ANSI President Meets Chinese Officials in DC and Beijing.

S. Joe Bhatia met with top officials from Chinese entities in Washington, DC and Beijing for trade-related activities aimed at fostering greater U.S.-China cooperation concerning standardization and conformity assessment. In addition to garnering renewed promises of continued cooperation, Bhatia proposed high-level U.S.-China events, to be held in 2012, focused on transparency to continue to address issues at hand. In video released by AASHTO, Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) Director John Cox describes his department's strategy for preserving highways and bridges during transportation funding crisis. Two-Minute State DOT Update, produced by AASHTO's Transportation TV, features Cox saying WYDOT has shifted focus from nominal reconstruction and improvement projects towards making primary goal preserving existing highway system "as long as possible." Draft Revisions help reach milestone in export control reform.

Draft revisions to Category VIII of U.S. Munitions List released by Obama administration constitute a major milestone in the ongoing effort to more appropriately control exports to allies of sensitive technology. Proposed revisions replace vague regulatory language with greater specificity for items remaining on USML and create new, stronger controls for items moved to the Commerce Control List - a proposal that AIA made early in the Obama administration. AIA releases Camera Link HS interface standard draft.

AIA has released Camera Link HS draft standard v1.0. After period of review by committee of industry experts, standard will be finalized and released to public in 2012. Camera Link HS supports bandwidth up to 5 times faster than Camera Link with up to 33.6 Gbps and future versions to 67.2 Gbps, packet re-transmit, plug and play operation, built-in fault tolerance with cyclical redundancy check, and cable lengths up to 300 m on fiber optic cable and 15 m on copper cable with CX4 connectors. Manufacturers' Ad Campaign in opposition of higher energy taxes.

NAM launched television ads opposing energy taxes and exposing detrimental effect they will have on manufacturing costs and jobs. Specifically, ads focus on policymakers faced with tough decisions about how to lower national debt without picking winners and losers in private sector. According to NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons, "Manufacturers use 1/3 of our nation's energy supply, so adding costly energy taxes to the mix will harm their ability to create new jobs, invest and grow." Robotics Orders up 41% through September.

North American based robotics companies are enjoying one of their best years ever. Total of 13,616 robots valued at $848.5 million were ordered in first 9 months by companies in North America. When orders to companies outside North America are included, totals are 15,683 robots valued at $968 million. Automotive OEM and component suppliers are the biggest customers, accounting for 53% of new orders. In non-automotive segments, orders are up 28% in first 9 months of 2011. Read More

Gene Haas Foundation, philanthropic arm of Haas Automation, Inc., announced another $150,000 in grant-funding to SME Education Foundation to align machinist training with needs of job seekers and employers in targeted local communities. This brings their support of foundation to nearly $700,000 in less than 5 years. Funding from Gene Haas Foundation and other partnering organizations has allowed SME Education Foundation to direct funding to areas of country where unemployment rate is at 8-12%. Read More

Manufacturing Technology Orders up 91.9% in 2011.

According to United States Manufacturing Technology Orders report, jointly compiled by AMTDA and AMT, September U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $606.56 million, up 22.9% from August and up 51.9% when compared with total of $399.32 million reported from September 2010. With year-to-date total of $4,074.00 million, 2011 is up 91.9% compared with 2010.
