BIO Applauds MLP Parity Act and thanks House, Senate sponsors.

According to BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood, Master Limited Partnership (MLP) Parity Act "will level the playing field between renewable fuels and fossil fuels in tax policy that shapes private investment decisions." Greenwood went on to commend inclusion of renewable chemicals, "for the first time establishing tax parity for this growing sector," and commented how this legislation will help drive employment and economic growth while reducing foreign oil dependence. Sediment Control Products Standard is under development.

ASTM WK11340, Test Method for Determination of Sediment Control Product’s Ability to Reduce Soil Loss Associated with Rainfall-Induced Erosion, will provide performance-based data of sediment control devices to regulating entities, specifiers, consumers and manufacturers. This proposed standard will offer means to calculate support practice factor (P factor), which would indicate how well sediment control device traps or filters sediment. Read More

ASTM Standard specifies plastic lumber use requirements.

ASTM D7568, Specification for Polyethylene-Based Structural-Grade Plastic Lumber for Outdoor Applications, presents all requirements needed so that plastic lumber materials can be appropriately specified for uses, such as main and secondary framing members, in which improved mechanical properties are essential. Standard applies to solid, rectangular SGPL products in which polyethylene resin (non cross-linked) is continuous phase and represents at least 50% of product by weight. NEMA Supports Reintroduction of energy efficiency bill.

At an event on Capitol Hill, NEMA joined national businesses and labor and environmental organizations in welcoming reintroduction of Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2013. NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis congratulated Senators Shaheen and Portman "for continuing this vital bipartisan effort" and said this proposal's significance could not be underestimated as it tackles market barriers to energy efficiency investment. Cement Manufacturer agrees to reduce harmful air emissions.

U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced that CEMEX, Inc., owner and operator of a Portland cement manufacturing facility in Lyons, CO, has agreed to operate advanced pollution controls on its kiln and pay $1 million civil penalty to resolve alleged violations of the Clean Air Act. Complaint filed against CEMEX alleged that between 1997–2000, company unlawfully made modifications at its plant that resulted in significant net increases of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions. April 2013 Business Conditions Report shows dip in manufacturing.

PMA's April 2013 Business Conditions Report shows 16% of 136 participating metalforming companies expect decline in economic activity over next 3 months. Also, 21% of participants predict decrease in orders, while 22% reported decreased average daily shipping levels in April; 44% said shipping was same as 3 months ago. Up from March 2013 and April 2012, 14% of companies reported employees on short time or layoff. Read More
