ASTM and ISO to cooperate on additive manufacturing standards.

ISO and ASTM International have signed an agreement to increase cooperation in developing international standards for additive manufacturing. Partner Standards Development Organization agreement provides new opportunities for the 2 organizations to adopt and jointly develop standards that serve the global marketplace. It aims to optimize stakeholder resources in development of additive manufacturing standards where both ISO and ASTM have expertise, and to shorten time to market. Read More

EPA Grants Clean Air Act Petition to improve NJ air quality.

November 2, 2011

U.S. EPA granted petition submitted by N.J. Department of Environmental Protection to limit SO2 emissions from PA power plant adversely impacting air quality in Warren, Sussex, Morris, and Hunterdon counties. To abide by this first single-source petition granted by EPA, Portland Generating Station in Northampton County, PA will have to significantly cut its SO2 emissions within 3 years. Final rule provides plant with flexibility to choose most cost-effective strategy for meeting limits. Read More

Reference Standard for Commercial Buildings was updated by DOE.

November 2, 2011

After preliminary analysis that ASHRAE/IES 2010 energy efficiency standard contains significant energy savings over 2007 standard, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued ruling establishing 2010 standard as commercial building reference standard for state building energy codes. States are required to certify, by October 18, 2013, that they have updated provisions of their commercial building code regarding energy efficiency to meet or exceed 90.1-2010. Read More

NIST measures key property of potential spintronic material.

An advanced material that could help bring about next-generation "spintronic" computers has revealed one of its fundamental secrets to scientists from Argonne National Laboratory and NIST. Custom-made material, constructed of lanthanum and strontium, might one day allow computers to use magnetic spin of electrons, in addition to their charge, for computation. Proposed ASTM Standard addresses deep foundation elements.

Proposed standard ASTM WK34326, Test Method for Integrity Testing of Concrete Deep Foundations by Thermal Profiling, will cover procedures for assessing integrity of concrete in cast-in-place deep foundation elements such as bored piles, drilled shafts, and auger cast piles. According to involved committee member Garland Likins, ASTM WK34326 "will enable the evaluation of a total concrete cross section, including the concrete outside the reinforcing cage." Read More

Light Sport Aircraft Standards cited in Federal Register.

In Federal Register, U.S. Federal Aviation Administration announced availability of ASTM International standard F2746-09, Specification for Pilot's Operating Handbook (POH) for Light Sport Airplane, and ASTM F2245-10c, Specification for Design and Performance of a Light Sport Airplane. Adam Morrison, involved with committees responsible for these standards, remarked that changes help by "reducing the time for safety enhancements to reach consumers on new production aircraft." Proposed Standards support hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

ASTM Subcommittee D03.14 on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells is developing standards designed to support quality standards for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles being developed by SAE International and ISO. They include ASTM WK34574, Test Method for Determination of Trace Hydrogen Bromide, Hydrogen Chloride, Chlorine and Organic Halides in Hydrogen Fuel by GC with ELCDC and MS; and ASTM WK23815, Test Method for Determination of Total Halocarbons Contained in Hydrogen and Other Gaseous Fuels. Via integrated planning process, U.S. EPA will help local governments dealing with difficult financial conditions identify opportunities to achieve clean water by controlling and managing releases of wastewater and stormwater runoff. ASTM D7728, Guide for Selection of ASTM Analytical Methods for Implementation of International Cyanide Management Code Guidance was developed by Subcommittee D19.06 on Methods for Analysis for Organic Substances in Water. Test methods referenced in standard control and optimize use of cyanide in gold leaching process, protect wildlife when solutions are released into open impoundment facilities, and define cyanide concentration in process solutions used to select personal protection equipment. IPC's Solder Products Value Council is actively urging tin smelters to become smelters of conflict-free minerals and recommends the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition/Global e-Sustainability Initiative Conflict-Free Smelter program. According to NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index, conditions facing the North American electroindustry improved on balance in October, climbing to 57.4 from 50 in September. Latest month was first since May in which index exceeded 50-point growth threshold. Meanwhile, October's EBCI for future North American conditions moved higher for second straight month, increasing to 63 from 58.3 one month ago. Read More

Paul Phillips, a Con-way Freight driver, was named 2011 Bendix National Truck Driving Championships Grand Champion, while Jeffrey Schlecht, a technician with Omaha Truck Center was named 2011 Technology and Maintenance Council SuperTech Grand Champion. Ricky Oliver, a Mississippi-based driver for WalMart Transportation won 2011 National Truck Driver of the Year, and Alfred LaCombe, safety director with Dupre' Logistics, won National Safety Director of the Year.
