NEMA commends House and Senate for passage of 3 FTAs.

NEMA welcomed passage by U.S. House and Senate of implementing legislation for free trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia, and Panama. U.S. electrical equipment and medical imaging equipment manufacturers exported more than $1.4 billion worth of goods to South Korea, Colombia, and Panama in 2010, combined. Most customs tariffs on these goods will be dropped to zero immediately upon on effective date of agreements, while rest will be eliminated progressively in coming years. Read More

FAA Breaks Ground on new air traffic control tower in Cleveland.

October 20, 2011

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt broke ground on $69 million air traffic control tower and Terminal Radar Approach Control facility at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Replacing tower dating back to 1988, new 324 ft tall tower will purportedly provide controllers with updated technology and better view of operations. Facility construction is scheduled to be completed in 2014 and expected to generate nearly 100 new construction jobs. Read More

Federal Engagement in Standards Activities is subject of new report.

National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Subcommittee on Standards (SoS) released report on federal engagement in standards activities. As coordinator of private sector-led standards and conformity assessment system in U.S., ANSI submitted comments to NSTC SoS in March 2011. Report affirms ANSI input document, which asserted standards and conformity assessment activities are linked to all facets of national economy and vital to continued global competitiveness of U.S. industry. Washington and Florida honored for best transportation projects.

During America's Transportation Awards competition, Washington State DOT claimed People's Choice Award for its Operation I-5 Partnership Project and Florida DOT was chosen as Grand Prize winner for its Interstate 10/Interstate 95 interchange rebuild known as "The Big I" project. AASHTO presented $10,000 cash prizes to both winning transportation departments, which will be used to support charity or academic scholarship program of their choice. Read More

EPA marks 25th anniversary of EPCRA.

Passed in 1986 as part of reauthorization for Superfund, Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act has played a significant role in protecting people's health and the environment by providing communities and emergency planners with area-specific information on toxic chemical releases. Under EPCRA, EPA collects information on toxic releases through Toxic Release Inventory program, a public database containing information regarding industrial releases of over 600 toxic chemicals. SME Education Foundation and Siemens PLM Software announced an in-kind software grant valued at $538,500 to Academy of Engineering at River Ridge High School in New Port Richey, FL. Grant was made through Siemens PLM Software's GO PLM(TM) program, which supports more than 1 million students annually at more than 11,000 global institutions. NEMA sent letters to U.S. government interagency committee, chaired by Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), to raise concerns about market access barriers faced by NEMA member companies in foreign countries. Students of University of Florida - Gainesville, Justin Simmons, Kent "Max" Kolegue, Colleen Watson, and Natasha Najdovski received first prize in PMMI U Student Packaging Solutions Contest, sponsored by B&R Industrial Automation Corp. First-place team shares $4,000 in scholarship funds while second- and third-place teams, from California Polytechnic Institute and Purdue University at Calumet, respectively, receive $2,000 scholarship for second place and $1,000 for third place. ASTM E2775, Practice for Guided Wave Testing of Above Ground Steel Pipework Using Piezoelectric Effect Transduction, is under jurisdiction of Subcommittee E07.10 on Specialized NDT Methods, part of ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing. Guided wave testing is among the most difficult forms of nondestructive tests and its success can be dependent on test operator.
