IMTS 2012 reports strong exhibit space sales.

Show management for IMTS (International Manufacturing Technology Show) 2012 reports that 1,030+ exhibitors have contracted 1,116,000+ ft² of exhibit space. These numbers are up 5% and 10.3, respectively, from IMTS 2010. Show will run from September 10-15 in Chicago, IL and is themed "Be There," a call to action for 82,000+ industrial decision makers from 119+ countries who will be in attendance to get ideas and find answers to their manufacturing problems and challenges. Industry Support enhances World of Asphalt 2012 experience.

More than 20 U.S. and worldwide industry organizations, including U.S. government agencies, are lending their support to 2012 World of Asphalt Show and Conference, enhancing networking and education opportunities for both attendees and exhibitors. Among overseas organizations supporting the show are Venezuela's CAVEDREPA, Mexico's Asociacion Mexicana del Asfalto, and Mongolian Road Association. NREL is helping Virgin Islands cut fuel use.

January 12, 2012

Like many islands, U.S. Virgin Islands are almost 100% dependent on imported oil for electricity. But USVI Gov. John P. de Jongh Jr., working with NREL and U.S. Department of Interior, has vowed to transform energy use dramatically. NREL has helped USVI to map renewable energy potential, and to determine how to get to a 60% reduction by 2025. Recipe to achieve reduction includes 2% biomass, 3% landfill gas, 3% solar, 6% wind, 8% waste-to-energy, and 38% energy efficiency. Read More

U.S. Construction Unemployment jumps to 16% in December.

January 11, 2012

Despite addition of 17,000 jobs in December, construction industry unemployment rate jumped to 16% last month, an increase from 13.1% in November, but down from 20.7% same time last year. For all of 2011, construction industry added 46,000 jobs, representing best industry performance since January 2007. According to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, increase in construction unemployment is primarily associated with seasonal factors and should not be interpreted as evidence of industry decline. Manufacturing Technology Orders up 73.9% from 2010.

According to AMTDA and AMT, November U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $430.17 million, which was down 6.9% from October but up 26.6% when compared to total of $339.68 million reported for November 2010. With year-to-date total of $4,956.51 million, 2011 is up 73.9% compared with 2010. Order slowdown in metal cutting equipment was countered by acceleration in fabricating sector and contributed to an increase over 2010 of nearly 75%. Read More

Manufacturing Employment improves in December.

January 10, 2012

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment rate fell from revised 8.7% in November to 8.5% in December. In addition, nonfarm payrolls increased by 200,000, exceeding expectations which had predicted rise of 150,000. Manufacturing employment jumped by 23,000 net new workers in December, nearly mirroring increase found in recent ADP report. In 2011, U.S. economy added 1.64 million new jobs, surpassing 940,000 net new workers created in 2010. Read More

IPC Standard covers Surface Mount Placement Characterization.

To help determine best placement equipment setup to meet needs for speed, capability, and accuracy, IPC released IPC-9850 Rev A, Surface Mount Placement Characterization, making it easier to quantify performance of placement equipment. New method calculates Expanded Measurement Uncertainty, which combines all measurement uncertainty of system. Individual factors included in EMU are gage repeatability and reproducibility variance, non-linearity, resolution, hysteresis, and artifact uncertainty. Read More
