PMA elects P.J. Thompson as 2012 Chairman of the Board.

PMA announced that P.J. Thompson, president of Trans-Matic Manufacturing Company, Holland, MI, has been elected 2012 chairman of the PMA board of directors. During his term, Thompson will work with PMA to expand association's educational offerings to include training in business-management fundamentals. He has pledged to focus on providing mid-level managers with training and experiences that will empower them to lead metalforming companies to new competitive heights on global stage. Read More

ASHRAE Technology Awards recognize outstanding achievements by members who have successfully applied innovative building design. Winning projects included Mountain Equipment Co-op, IKEA Brossard Distribution Center, Université de Sherbrooke, Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, Thermal Energy Corporation-Thermal Energy Storage, and Arena Marcel Dutil. Sustainable Purchasing Webinar highlighted interagency efforts.

Led by US EPA's Alison Kinn Bennett and US GSA's Brennan Conaway, ANSI hosted one-hour webinar related to environmentally preferable purchasing. Webinar enabled standards developing organizations, product manufacturers, and others to hear about interagency efforts with regards to developing guidelines for product standards and ecolabels for greening federal procurement. Arnold, RPh, received Max Seales Yonker Member of the Year Award, honoring the ISPE Member who made the most significant contribution to Society during past year. Shinichi Osada and Jane Brown received Richard B. Purdy Distinguished Achievement Award, honoring ISPE Members who have made significant, long-term contributions to Society. Manufacturers disappointed with Super Committee failure.

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement after Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction announced it could not agree on deficit reduction plan. According to Timmons, Committee's failure to reach agreement is at best a missed opportunity to put the fiscal house in order and represents a serious step back from goal of creating pro-growth environment that fosters job creation and investment. Monthly Leasing and Finance Index shows increase in Oct.

ELFA Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25), reporting economic activity for equipment finance sector, showed overall new business volume for October 2011 up 22% from same period in 2010, down 16% from previous month, and up 25% year-to-date. Receivables over 30 days dropped to 2.2%, and charge-offs declined to 0.7%. While number of lease applications approved decreased to 76.3%, 59% of participating organizations reported submitting more transactions for approval. Read More

Proposed ASTM Plastics Standard covers polyurethane gel tests.

Proposed standard ASTM WK34781, Practice for Gel Tests for Polyurethane Non-Foam Formulations, will provide polyurethane raw material suppliers, customers, and developers with practice for setting up gel tests to determine material reactivity. As noted by David Mullen, a member of subcommittee responsible for this standard, "having some idea of the time it takes adhesives to bond and coatings to set helps to determine their suitability for different applications." PTDA Foundation Surpasses fund drive goal for 2011.

Support for PTDA Foundation's fundraising efforts during 2011, including annual golf outing, came to nearly $240,000, which marks 6% increase from 2010 levels. Of note, 16 early contributors jump started 2011 campaign with contributions totalling $58,650 in late 2010. Contributors included 212 companies from within power transmission/motion control industry, of which 83 gave for 4 consecutive years, 38 who increased contributions over 2010 their levels, and 29 new contributors. Report predicts strong growth in 2012 purchases and pinpoints planned spending in categories that include equipment type, plant size, and geographic regions.
