ASTM E2905/E2905M, Practice for Examination of Mill and Kiln Girth Gear Teeth — Electromagnetic Methods, provides effective method for gear examination using eddy current array. Developed by Subcommittee E07.07 on Electromagnetic Method, part of ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing, standard addresses need to detect surface breaking flaws electronically and to accurately size any surface breaking cracks found on cast and forged mill girth gear and pinion teeth. ASTM Parasailing Standard addresses weather conditions.

Because weather, particularly gusty wind, has been a variable in parasailing accidents, ASTM subcommittee F24.65 on Parasailing has developed ASTM F2993, Guide for Monitoring Weather Conditions for Safe Parasail Operation. Standard is a step in the right direction to keep parasail operators alert and to monitor weather in a proper fashion. Once insurance industry is aware of ASTM F2993, companies will most likely adjust their policies to reference the standard. Read More

ASTM Committee presents Award of Merit to Dr. Carlton Slough.

Carlton G. Slough, Ph.D., senior applications chemist at TA Instruments, has received the ASTM International Award of Merit from Committee E37 on Thermal Measurements. A member of ASTM International since 2005, Slough was honored for his outstanding leadership and contributions as recording secretary of Committee E37. He has also provided significant technical and literary contributions to the development of E37 standards ASTM E2551 and ASTM E2716. Read More

ASTM Award of Merit honors Dr. Warren Haggard's efforts.

Warren Haggard, Ph.D., professor and Herff chair of excellence in biomedical engineering at the University of Memphis in Memphis, TN, received ASTM International Award of Merit from Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices. The Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow was given to Haggard in recognition for his "outstanding leadership and high productivity in fostering the development and promulgation of surgical implant standards." EPMA elects new president during annual General Assembly.

On May 3, European Powder Metallurgy Association held 24th annual General Assembly in Munich, during which Philippe Gundermann was elected as President of Association. Retiring President, Ingo Cremer, provided review of last 6 yrs of service, while Jonathan Wroe, EPMA Executive Director, gave update on EPMA's activities over past 12 months. Also, EPMA Council was re-elected with inclusion of Dr. Rainer Link; Jody Turin, as representative for HIP sector; and Peter Kjeldsteen as Treasurer. Read More

PT/MC Industry continues to forecast growth.

The 1Q13 PTDA Business Index produced a reading of 61.1, which represents substantial increase over last quarter’s reading of 50.7, indicating that the power transmission/motion control industry expanded for 12th consecutive quarter. However, 1Q2013 index is significantly lower when compared against same quarter in previous years.
