NFPA Innovation Award recognizes Jude Hueber.

Presented to individual engineers or technicians to recognize innovative use of fluid power, 2012 NFPA Innovation Award went to Jude Hueber for innovative hydraulic hybrid vehicle design performed for Lightning Hybrids, LLC. Hybrid drive system integrates components from various manufacturers with sophisticated software that controls speed of fixed displacement pumps and accumulator pressures to optimize efficiency for lighter shuttle buses and delivery vehicles. Taking place in Baltimore, MD form June 2–4, 2013 Society of Manufacturing Engineers Annual Conference will focus on sharing information, driving innovation in manufacturing, and preparing advanced manufacturing workforce. ASTM Committee develops standard for nitric acid extraction.

ASTM WK42045, Practice for Nitric Acid-Extraction of Elements from Ores and Related Metallurgical Materials Using Closed Vessel Microwave Heating, will be used to protect water used for drinking, recreational, and agricultural purposes from environmental impacts. According to one member of subcommittee responsible for its development, proposed standard will be used by laboratories to dissolve samples for metals analysis and comparison with other testing method solutions. ASTM Standard addresses orthopedic implant labeling.

ASTM F2943, Guide for Presentation of End User Labeling Information for Orthopedic Implants Used in Joint Arthroplasty, presents a universal label format of content and relative location of information necessary for final implant selection within implant's overall package labeling. Guide identifies high priority label content and indicates specific section of implant's labeling where this crucial information is to be placed. NFPA publishes standard on pneumatic fluid power.

ISO 6358-2:2013 Pneumatic fluid power – Determination of flow-rate characteristics of components – Part 2: Alternative test methods specifies discharge test and charge test as alternative methods for testing pneumatic fluid power components that use compressible fluids. It does not apply to components whose flow coefficient is unstable during use. In addition, document does not apply to components that exchange energy with fluid during flow-rate measurement. Student Teams Recognized for solar, Li-ion car designs.

Representing 28 Colorado schools, 97 teams comprised of students designed, built, and raced their solar- and lithium ion-powered vehicles for competitions hosted by U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Trophies were awarded for fastest Li-ion and solar powered model cars as well as lithium-ion and solar design technology, craftsmanship and innovation. Additionally, Spirit Award was bestowed for good sportsmanship. Read More
