ASTM Committee approves deck structure fire test response standard.

March 21, 2012

Developed by Subcommittee E05.14 on External Fire Exposures, ASTM E2726/E2726M, Test Method for Evaluating the Fire-Test-Response of Deck Structures to Burning Brands, will assist building code officials, manufacturers, and home owners in assessing fire performance of decking materials. Test simulates deck exposed to burning embers on upper horizontal surface. ASTM E2726/E2726M is in response to the growing urban wildland fire concern in many states. Read More

ASTM Standard covers use of LF RFID transponders in livestock.

ASTM WK27546, Test Method for Acquisition Distance of Low Frequency RFID Transponders, is designed to measure distance at which low frequency RFID transceiver successfully interrogates low frequency RFID transponder. Proposed standard will allow end users to test set of tags to determine overall performance prior to placing LF RFID tag in an animal. Initial test will generate bench mark that the LF RFID technology end-user can expect in real-world applications. Read More

FAA to increase efficiency and reduce aircraft emissions.

Acting Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Huerta and aviation partners kicked off effort to make air traffic control more efficient, help airlines improve on-time performance, and reduce emissions from aircraft flying into and out of Northern California airports. As part of NextGen modernization program, Metroplex initiative is based on Performance-Based Navigation, which allows shorter, more direct routes that reduce flight time and fuel consumption, resulting in fewer carbon emissions. Workshop Agreement on Clean Cookstoves unanimously approved.

March 21, 2012

According to World Health Organization, exposure to smoke from traditional cookstoves and open fires causes 2 million premature deaths annually. Partnership for Clean Indoor Air and Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves organized International Workshop on cookstoves, and ANSI served as secretariat. During conference, more than 80 stakeholders representing more than 20 countries worked toward facilitating widespread use of clean, efficient, and safe cookstove technology through standardization. Revised Handbook addresses electronics assembly and soldering.

Covering 14 topics in 289 pages, IPC-AJ-820A Assembly and Joining Handbook addresses all aspects involved in creating a PCB, from handling to design to component selection and soldering. Book gives users basic data such as terms and definitions as well as technical information. It also includes equations for designers as well as techniques for tin whisker mitigation. Construction Unemployment dips to 17.1% in February.

Despite loss of 13,000 construction jobs in February, industry's unemployment rate dipped to 17.1%, down from 17.7% in January, according to U.S. Labor Department's March 9 employment report. Nation's construction industry has added 65,000 jobs, or 1.2% since February 2011, when unemployment rate stood at 21.8%. Both residential and nonresidential building construction sectors added 2,000 jobs in February for year over year increases of 2.3% and 1.3%, respectively. Read More

EPA issues 2011 fuel economy trends report.

According to EPA's annual report, "Light-Duty Automotive Technology, Carbon Dioxide Emissions, and Fuel Economy Trends: 1975 Through 2011," average fuel efficiency for new cars and light duty trucks has increased while CO2 emissions continue to decrease for seventh consecutive year. For 2010, average real world CO2 emissions from new vehicles were 394 g of CO2/mile and average fuel economy value was 22.6 mpg. EPA projects improvement in 2011 to 391 g of CO2/mile and 22.8 mpg. Lisa P. Jackson announces Anacostia River Revitalization Fund.

Administrator Lisa P. Jackson and David O'Neill of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation joined Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton of the District of Columbia to announce creation of The Anacostia River Revitalization Fund. The fund, which will invest $1 million in restoration activities this year, with total goal of investing $5 million over next 3 years, will be used protect and restore Anacostia River and to create national model for watershed conservation. Taco Van Der Maten has been elected chairman of Committee F40.

Taco van der Maten, product manager, X-ray fluorescence, at PANalytical in Almelo, Netherlands, was elected chairman of ASTM International Committee F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials. Member of ASTM International since 2006, van der Maten also contributes to Committee D20 on Plastics. Within Committee F40, he leads task group responsible for update of ASTM F2617. Van der Maten's career began in 1985 at Heineken in Zoeterwoude, Netherlands. Read More

NEMA's EBCI for February surges to 6 year high.

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index for current North American conditions jumped sharply in February, rising more than 18 points to 72.5, its highest level in more than 6 years. Survey's measure of degree of change in current North American conditions rose to highest mark in almost 2 years, soaring to +0.7 in February from +0.1 in January. Meanwhile, EBCI for future North American conditions, though remaining firmly positive, retreated slightly in February. Read More

ASABE adopts, with deviations, international standard on pick-up balers.

ASABE document, ANSI/ASABE AD4254-11:2010, Agricultural machinery-Safety-Part 11: Pick-up balers, was adopted to clarify the North American position related to baler guarding and pick-ups. It further harmonizes national and international standardization to facilitate manufacturing, safety advancements, and product marketing worldwide, while recognizing areas North American practices differ from those described in ISO 4254-11:2010, Agricultural machinery-Safety-Part 11: Pick-up balers. NAM Urges Senators to support Export-Import Bank amendment.

NAM President and CEO urged senators to support amendment offered by Senators Cantwell (D-WA), Johnson (D-SD), Graham (R-SC), and Shelby (R-AL), which will reauthorize Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im) and increase its lending limit. To support its critical role in helping manufacturers' export to new markets and keep up with global competition, Timmons noted that Ex-Im supports near 290,000 export-related jobs and that over 85% of its transactions directly benefit small business exporters.
