Symposium to address multi-component geosynthetic clay liners.

Third Symposium on Current and Future Practices for the Testing of Multi-Component Geosynthetic Clay Liners will be held June 27. Major motivator for symposium is the advent of multi-component GCLs, which can be defined as GCLs with attached film, coating, or membrane that decreases hydraulic conductivity, protects clay core, or both. Topics will include mechanical testing, peel and shear behavior, hydraulic testing, durability of multi-component, field performance, and research studies. Read More

Proposed ASTM Fences Standard focuses on privacy slat specifications.

Being developed by Subcommittee F14.40 on Chain Link Fence and Wire Accessories, proposed ASTM WK36470, Specification for Privacy Slats for Chain Link Fence, aims to provide means for increased standardization of slats inserted into chain link fences. Specific focus will be given to insert slats for specific chain link mesh sizes as well as pre-woven privacy chain slat products. Manufacturers, contractors, and other interested parties are invited to join in standards development. Read More

Ship Builder, Engine Manufacturer to pay for CAA violations.

April 9, 2012

Coltec Industries Inc. and National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO), in first enforcement action under marine diesel engine air rules, will pay civil penalty of $280,000. Also, ~$500,000 is to be spent on environmental project aimed at reducing nitrogen oxide emissions from testing stack at Coltec's Beloit, WI facility. Coltec and NASSCO further agreed to attach required EPA engine labels to engines previously unlabeled or improperly labeled. Read More

AEM President urges U.S. House to pass highway bill.

April 9, 2012

In response to U.S. House of Representatives passing 90-day extension of federal surface transportation programs, AEM President Dennis Slater issued statement on behalf of U.S. equipment manufacturers and I Make America campaign. Slater expressed disappointment regarding passage of time and number of extensions since last highway bill expired. "Enough is enough," said Slater, who then demanded House act immediately to pass its highway bill and move to conference with Senate. Read More

Airflow Measurement Station Test Method Standard approved by ANS.

AMCA Standard 610-06 (R2012) - Laboratory Methods of Testing Airflow Measurement Stations for Performance Rating, was approved without significant change from 2006 version. It was reaffirmed by membership on June 24, 2011 and approved by ANS on February 3, 2012. Covering field-installed airflow measurement stations for HVAC applications, standard establishes uniform test methods for determining performance and accuracy of airflow measurement stations under varied airflow rates/conditions. EPA proposes carbon pollution standard for new power plants.

Following 2007 Supreme Court ruling, U.S. EPA proposed first Clean Air Act standard for carbon pollution from new power plants. Proposed standard reflects ongoing trend in power sector to build cleaner plants that take advantage of American-made technologies, including new, clean-burning, efficient natural gas generation. Rule also creates path forward for new technologies to be deployed at future facilities that will allow companies to burn coal while emitting less carbon pollution. Read More

ASTM Standard helps determine enamel holdout.

Manufacturers and developers of architectural coatings will be primary users of ASTM D7786, Test Method for Determining Enamel Holdout. Standard was developed by Subcommittee D01.42 on Architectural Coatings, part of ASTM Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications. According to Keith Alderfer, associate scientist, The Dow Chemical Co., and member of D01.42, enamel holdout characteristic of primer can have significant impact on appearance of finished painted system. New ASTM Subcommittee to deal with US gov't contract property.

ASTM International subcommittee (E53.20) will develop standards for management of property connected by contract with entities of the U.S. federal government. Brandon Kriner, manager of Asset Management, Harris Corp.'s Government Communications Systems Division, expressed hope in getting contractor and government entities involved in development of standards in order to "create some common ground." Jet Tunnel Fan Testing Standard approved by ANSI.

ANSI's Board of Standards Review has approved revision ANSI/AMCA 250-2012, Laboratory Methods of Testing Jet Tunnel Fans for Performance. Standard deals with determination of those technical characteristics needed to describe all aspects of performance of jet tunnel fans. It does not cover fans designed for ducted applications nor those designed solely for air circulation. Procedures relate to laboratory conditions; measurement of performance under in-situ conditions is not included. Read More

Budapest IPC Conference sees double-digit growth.

IPC's second annual Conference on Electronics Assembly: Soldering, Assembly and Inspection, held in Budapest, Hungary saw an increase of 21% in attendees and 44% increase in exhibitors over its inaugural event last year. Event included half-day workshops conducted by EMS experts Bob Willis, and Lars Wallin, IPC's European representative.
