BIO hires Fritz Bittenbender to handle regulatory issues.

BIO has hired Fritz Bittenbender to serve as Vice President, Alliance Development and State Government Relations. Bittenbender will spearhead BIO's engagement in and support of state-level legislative and regulatory issues while promoting responsible development of bioscience industry and better understanding of policy issues critical to the industry. He will also lead BIO's engagement with stakeholder organizations, including patient and disease advocacy groups. Read More

AEM Statement addresses rejection of Keystone pipeline.

AEM has expressed disappointment in Obama administration's announcement that it will not approve Keystone XL pipeline. AEM joined other construction and business groups in an industry call to action letter that urged administration to approve pipeline, citing opportunity to create more than 120,000 jobs in construction and manufacturing industries and ability for completed pipeline to help provide stable supply of energy to North American consumers. Revised "ANSI Z136.3 Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care" publication defines parameters of safe laser use in clinical, hospital, dentistry, and veterinary facilities. Revision includes new guidelines and information on wavelengths employed in medical environments, duties of laser safety officers involved with rented or borrowed laser equipment, audit requirements and procedures, and clinically relevant terminology. ASTM WK35250, Practice for Fiber-Reinforced Concrete for Making and Curing Test Specimens in the Laboratory and Field, will provide proper direction and ensure adequate documentation to aid in interpretation, understanding, and reduction of variance in test results for fiber-reinforced concrete. ANSI February Caucus will feature DoD's Greg Saunders.

ANSI Caucus Luncheon on February 3 in Washington, DC will feature Greg Saunders, director of Defense Standardization Program (DSPO) at U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), who will discuss highlights of DSPO in relation to standards. In his current role, Saunders is responsible for policies and procedures governing development and use of many specifications, standards, lists, and descriptions. NTSB Completes Data Collection for E-AB aircraft safety study.

January 25, 2012

Throughout 2011, NTSB conducted study of Experimental Amateur-Built (E-AB) aircraft. In addition to using information gathered during its accident investigations, NTSB has been working with FAA, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), and individual owners/builders. NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P Hersman expressed hopes that this study, scheduled to be completed in spring of 2012, will "result in a real and immediate safety payoff" for those who fly E-AB aircraft. LaHood and Huerta break ground for new runway.

January 25, 2012

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Acting Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Huerta helped break ground for $791 million runway expansion at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Project will extend, shift, and lengthen Runway 9R/27L from 5,276 to 8,000 ft. When construction activity peaks next year, project will contribute more than $1 million per day to local economy. It will also generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs by the time runway opens in fall 2014. Read More

IPC Data Exchange Standards aid environmental compliance.

With proliferation of regulations focused on materials in products, IPC is expanding its data exchange standards. IPC 2-18g Declaration of Batteries and Battery Materials and IPC 2-18j Declaration of Chemical Analysis Lab Reports Task Groups will begin development of standards that aid in exchange of information on batteries and lab reports, respectively. Vacuum Cleaner Committee Task Group is open to interested parties.

Interested parties are invited to join Task Group F11.50.13 on the Development of ASTM Standard Test Methods for the Measurement of Battery-Powered Vacuum Cleaner Performance. According to F11 chairman Ray Mayginnes, task group will develop standards for characteristics such as cleaning, air performance, battery life, filtration, and sound. Willem De Vos comes to SPE after serving as CEO of Vitalo Group, a global supplier of plastic packaging and thermoformed products. Previously he managed compounding and processing units of Recticel, an international producer of polyurethane automotive components. A member of SPE, Mr. De Vos served as chair-elect of European Thermoforming Division. Air Filtration Device Committee holds testing program.

Air Filtration Device Standards Development Committee (AFD) of IESO will continue its research efforts by conducting 3-day (March 15-17) testing program of HEPA-filtered negative air type or collection machines. Goal is to gather data to complete development of ANSI/IESO Standard for field evaluation of portable HEPA-equipped air filtration devices. BSA Conference Table Registration opens February 1st.
