Conference will address protecting health data.

NIST Computer Security Guide draft is available for comment.

NIST has published, for public comment, draft update to Computer Security Incident Handling Guide (NIST Special Publication 800-61, Revision 2), which is intended for organizations managing their responses to incidents such as hacking attacks. Reflecting changes in threats and incidents, revision will help established and newly formed teams to create incident response policy and plan. NIST requests comments by March 16, 2012. Read More

ASTM Committee seeks input on hydrophobic standard revisions.

ASTM International Committee E21 on Space Simulation and Applications of Space Technology is requesting input on upcoming revisions for ASTM F21 Test Method for Hydrophobic Surface Films by the Atomizer Test, and ASTM F22, Test Method for Hydrophobic Surface Films by the Water-Break Test. While not quantitative, these methods are used to verify that surfaces are sufficiently free of hydrophobic contaminants to proceed to application of primer, plating, adhesives, or conversion coatings. ASTM Committee at work on polyethylene pipe standards.

ASTM International Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems is currently working on series of proposed new standards for polyethylene pipe fittings. Standards will enable pipeline and piping project development using uniform fittings dimensions from every fabricator. Experienced engineers with pressure vessel design and FEA modeling background on non-linear visco-elastic materials who can contribute computational resources are particularly encouraged to join in development of proposed standards. AEM calls on Congress to pass highway bills.

On behalf of U.S. equipment manufacturers and I Make America's nearly 20,000 grassroots supporters nationwide, AEM President Dennis Slater issued statement urging congressional leaders to pass highway bills H.R. 7 and MAP-21. According to Slater, House and Senate leadership and conferees will need to put partisanship aside and work together to quickly achieve an agreement on a comprehensive, fully funded highway bill to send to President Obama before stopgap extension expires. Jane Weissman receives REW Policy Leadership Award.

Jane Weissman, Executive Director of IREC, received 2012 Renewable Energy World's Policy Leadership Award, which recognizes significant contribution to field of renewable energy. Jane's renewable energy career started in 1985 as director of Massachusetts Photovoltaic Center. In 1991, her work with national solar industry and utilities led to creation of PV-COMPACT. As executive director of IREC, she oversees operation of regulatory, policy, credentialing, and workforce development activities. Read More

Air Toxic Emissions Standards apply to PVC production facilities.

February 22, 2012

With aim of improving air quality and protecting people's health in surrounding communities, U.S. EPA issued strong final standards requiring facilities that produce polyvinyl chloride and copolymers (PVC) to reduce harmful air emissions. Final standards are based on currently available technologies and will reduce emissions of air toxics, such as dioxin and vinyl chloride. Facilities, which can choose most practical control technology/technique, will also have to monitor emissions. Read More

ASTM International Committee F14 on Fences welcomes participation in development of proposed standard, ASTM WK36054, Guide for Anchoring Steel Fence and Gate Posts in Lieu of Concrete Footings. Standard will detail efficient method for installing drive anchor systems that stabilize fences, flagpoles, sign posts, and other vertical elements such as columns. Manufacturers Applaud Inhofe Resolution on Utility MACT rule.

NAM Senior VP for Policy and Government Relations Aric Newhouse, in support of Sen. James Inhofe's (R-OK) "resolution of disapproval" through Congressional Review Act to repeal EPA's Utility MACT rule, said such an action "will help give manufacturers more certainty while stopping an extremely harmful regulation." Inhofe also called for "all-of-the-above energy policy," which should be aimed at keeping manufacturing competitive and include clean coal as well as Keystone XL pipeline. Read More
