U.S. Team Takes Gold in 2013 International Rocketry Challenge.

Sponsored by Raytheon, U.S. team comprised of 3 students from Georgetown, TX 4-H rocketry club placed first in sixth annual International Rocketry Challenge at Le Bourget Airport in Paris. International Rocketry Challenge serves as culmination of 3 separate competitions held annually worldwide, each of which brings aims to inspire middle and high school students to become engaged in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) by designing, building, and launching model rockets. NAM Urges Participation in second annual Manufacturing Day.

NAM asks manufacturing plants to open their facilities to visitors on this date to help expand knowledge about and improve general public's perception of manufacturing careers. BIO Official defends biofuels standard to House Committee.

BIO submitted comments to House Committee on Energy and Commerce in response to 4th white paper reviewing Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Document examines goals and achievements of RFS as part of national energy policy. According to BIO's Brent Erickson, biofuels technology is helping U.S. economy by mitigating impact of high oil costs and reducing gas prices. He also said RFS2 has further developed domestic biofuels industry, reducing dependence on foreign fuels and creating jobs. Read More

NREL Sustainability Program reaches beyond campus.

NREL's sustainability program, Sustainable NREL, engages employees in lab that minimizes use of resources – energy, materials, water – while maximizing their received value. According to Sustainable NREL Director Frank Rukavina, this program aims "to foster social and environmental responsibility and implement initiatives that will showcase laboratory as global model for sustainability." EPA Report reviews effects of development on health and environment.

Our Built and Natural Environments: A Technical Review of the Interactions among Land Use, Transportation, and Environmental Quality was announced by EPA Acting Administrator Bob Perciasepe during national Twitter Town Hall meeting. It summarizes trends in land use, buildings, travel behavior, population growth, and expansion of developed land. Discussions on environmental consequences of these are also included, as is conclusion describing ways to reduce such effects. Read More

AASHTO Marine Transportation Report identifies need for funding.

AASHTO's Waterborne Freight Transportation Bottom Line Report indicates water borne freight system is underfunded and faces serious challenges. It identifies threats to future of Marine Transportation System and action alternatives, including creation of Office of Multimodal Freight at USDOT. Also suggested is implementation of best practices for planning and investment among Federal, state, regional, and local organizations to improve and modernize waterborne freight transportation.
