NEMA's EBCI for February surges to 6 year high.

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index for current North American conditions jumped sharply in February, rising more than 18 points to 72.5, its highest level in more than 6 years. Survey's measure of degree of change in current North American conditions rose to highest mark in almost 2 years, soaring to +0.7 in February from +0.1 in January. Meanwhile, EBCI for future North American conditions, though remaining firmly positive, retreated slightly in February. Read More

ASABE adopts, with deviations, international standard on pick-up balers.

ASABE document, ANSI/ASABE AD4254-11:2010, Agricultural machinery-Safety-Part 11: Pick-up balers, was adopted to clarify the North American position related to baler guarding and pick-ups. It further harmonizes national and international standardization to facilitate manufacturing, safety advancements, and product marketing worldwide, while recognizing areas North American practices differ from those described in ISO 4254-11:2010, Agricultural machinery-Safety-Part 11: Pick-up balers. NAM Urges Senators to support Export-Import Bank amendment.

NAM President and CEO urged senators to support amendment offered by Senators Cantwell (D-WA), Johnson (D-SD), Graham (R-SC), and Shelby (R-AL), which will reauthorize Export-Import Bank (Ex-Im) and increase its lending limit. To support its critical role in helping manufacturers' export to new markets and keep up with global competition, Timmons noted that Ex-Im supports near 290,000 export-related jobs and that over 85% of its transactions directly benefit small business exporters. ASTM Concrete Committee names Steven E. Parker as chairman.

ASTM International Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates has named Steven E. Parker, North American sales and marketing manager at CHRYSO Inc., Rockwall, TX, as its new chairman. A member of ASTM since 1993, Parker is also chairman of Subcommittee C09.95 on Coordination. Prior to assuming his role with CHRYSO in 2008, Parker was VP/general manager at Trinity Materials Inc. in Ferris, TX, and VP of aggregate development and technical services at RMC Mid-Atlantic LLC in Greenville, SC. Statement by AIA shows supports for Cantwell-Graham amendment.

According to AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey, Export-Import Bank "runs the risk of losing its important ability to help American companies export" without passage of Cantwell-Graham amendment. This bipartisan amendment would reauthorize Export-Import Bank through September 30, 2015 and increase its lending authority cap, allowing it to continue its financing efforts which directly support 290,000+ U.S. jobs and could contribute towards deficit reduction. As President of The Manufacturing Institute, Emily DeRocco focused on addressing critical skills gap and building an educated and skilled workforce to fill American manufacturing jobs. During her tenure, NAM-Endorsed Manufacturing Skills Certification System was developed and deployed. In 2008, DeRocco chartered first national Education Council to manufacturers, and most recently, DeRocco was named to Higher Ed Working Group of President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Incandescent Lamp Shipments increased in Q4 2011.

March 19, 2012

NEMA's indexes for incandescent and CFL lamp shipments increased by 29.4% and 3.6%, respectively, during Q4 2011 compared to Q3 2011. While incandescent lamp shipments posted year-over-year gain of 41%, CFLs declined 6.6%. Calendar year comparison also showed shipments of CFLs decreased by 6.6% and that incandescent lamp shipments rose 16.4% during 2011. Incandescent lamps increased its share of combined incandescent-CFL market, with reading of 82.8%, while share of CFLs decreased to 17.2%. Read More
