Tesoro to pay $1.1 million to resolve CAA violations.

U.S. EPA announced that Tesoro Corporation, Tesoro Refining and Marketing Company LLC, and Tesoro Alaska Company have agreed to pay a $1.1 million penalty to resolve claims that Tesoro failed to comply with requirements under the Clean Air Act at 4 of its refining facilities that produce conventional gasoline. In its complaint, EPA alleged that Tesoro failed to comply with recordkeeping, reporting, sampling, and testing requirements at its facilities in UT, ND, WA, and AK. Read More

Linear Fluorescent Lamp Shipments surge during first quarter.

June 5, 2013

NEMA’s T5 and T8 linear fluorescent lamp indexes surged upward 6.3 and 15.7% on year-over-year basis, respectively, during 2013Q1. T8 index value of 120.2 was the second highest in the history of the series, while index reading of 173.9 for T5 lamps was the highest since 2011. Index for T12 lamp shipments continued to diminish, posting decrease of 38.9% year-over-year, and settling at 36.5 for the quarter. T8 lamps increased in market share by 2.2 percentage points, reaching 75%.

Micro-Bunny Sculpture shows promise of material for 3D shaping.

Published in Optical Materials Express, "Formation of three-dimensional carbon microstructures via two-photon microfabrication and microtransfer molding," presents results from Japanese scientists who used micro-sculpting techniques and new resin to create bacterium-sized sculptures. Material can be molded into complex, conductive 3D structures with features that are a few micrometers across, enabling creation of conductive materials in complex shapes at microscopic or cellular level.
