RIA Launches Certified Robot Integrator program.

March 5, 2012

RIA is taking applications from integrators interested in becoming certified. JR Automation's Scot Lindemann named RIA's experience handling confidential data as well as association's development of American National Robot Safety Standard and safety training as justifications for RIA undertaking certification. Curtis Richardson of Spirit Aerosystems called program "a convenient tool" to help identify established integrators as well as those who meet "basic but very critical" criteria. Read More

NEMA Publishes 3 Major Guidelines for conduit and cable fittings.

NEMA has published ANSI/NEMA FB 1 Fittings, Cast Metal Boxes and Conduit Bodies for Conduit, Electrical Metallic Tubing, and Cable; NEMA FB 2.10 Selection and Installation Guidelines for Fittings for use with Non-Flexible Conduit or Tubing (Rigid Metal Conduit, Intermediate Metallic Conduit, and Electrical Metallic Tubing); and NEMA FB 2.20 Selection and Installation Guidelines for Fittings for use with Flexible Electrical Conduit and Cable. U.S. Construction Machinery Exports gain 43% in 2011.

March 2, 2012

According to AEM, U.S. construction equipment exports increased 43% in 2011 compared to previous year, reaching total of $23.5 billion. Top 10 countries in terms of buying U.S.-made construction machinery in 2011 were Canada, Australia, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, China, Colombia, South Africa, Russia, and Peru. AEM and its "I Make America" campaign have pushed for export-friendly policies that create and sustain American jobs. Examples of such policies includes free trade agreements. Read More

IPC elects new officers and members to Board of Directors.

Nominating and Governance Committee of IPC Board of Directors presented 9 candidates for election at IPC Annual Meeting. Stephen Pudles, CEO of Spectral Response LLC, was elected Chairman, while Marc Peo, President of Heller Industries was chosen for Vice Chairman, and Joseph O'Neil, President of Hunter Technology Corporation, was picked for Secretary/Treasurer. Six board directors include Michael Carano, Robert Neves, Tony Zhou, Robert Black, Jr., Rex Rozario, and Don Schroeder. Read More

FAA increase efficiency and reduce emissions in GA and NC airports.

March 2, 2012

As part of FAA's NextGen modernization program, the Metroplex initiative, includes optimization of airspace procedures and aims to improve flow of air traffic into and out of all airports in Atlanta and Charlotte metropolitan areas. Collaborative regional partnership includes FAA, National Air Traffic Controllers Association, Delta Air Lines, US Airways, and Atlanta and Charlotte-area airports. NEMA endorses legislation to spur energy storage technologies.

March 2, 2012

On behalf of its Energy Storage Council, NEMA applauded Rep. Chris Gibson (R-NY) and Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) for introducing legislation to promote adoption of energy storage technologies. HR 4096 would offer 20% investment tax credit to energy storage used in connection with power grid, with no project eligible to receive more than $40 million. To promote efficiency and distributed generation in commercial/residential markets, bill offers 30% credit for on-site application of energy storage. Read More

FAA proposes to raise airline pilot qualification standards.

March 1, 2012

FAA proposed to raise qualifications for first officers who fly for U.S passenger and cargo airlines. Consistent with mandate in Airline Safety and FAA Extension Act of 2010, proposed rule would require first officers - also known as co-pilots - to hold Airline Transport Pilot certificate, requiring 1,500 hours of pilot flight time. Proposal would also require first officers to have an aircraft type rating, which involves additional training and testing specific to airplanes they fly. Read More

PCB Industry Results have been released for January 2012.

According to January findings from IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program, combined industry shipments for rigid PCBs and flexible circuits in January 2012 decreased 3.5% from January 2011, while orders booked increased 6.2%. Combined flex and rigid industry book-to-bill ratio in January 2012 continued to rise, and stands at 1.01. Sharon Starr, IPC market research director, said "Both rigid PCB and flexible circuit sales followed normal seasonal patterns." Read More

Energy Star Leaders achieve Obama's energy efficiency goal.

Nearly half of the organizations recognized as Energy Star Leaders have improved energy efficiency of their building portfolios by 20% or more. EPA's Energy Star program has helped 90 organizations achieve goal by providing energy management strategy, which includes focus on ongoing performance measurement and whole-building improvement. Energy Star Leaders have cumulatively saved more than $150 million on utility bills and prevented GHG emissions equal to electricity use of nearly 95,000 homes. Read More

PMA Business Conditions Report predicts spike in next 3 months.

February 29, 2012

According to February 2012 Business Conditions Report, 51% of participants expect economic activity to improve during next 3 months, up from 41% in January, while only 4% report that activity will decline. Metalforming companies also anticipate slight improvement in incoming orders, with 56% forecasting increase in orders, up from 51% in January. In addition, 45% of participants report that shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago, up from 30% in January. Read More
