Air Toxic Emissions Standards apply to PVC production facilities.

February 22, 2012

With aim of improving air quality and protecting people's health in surrounding communities, U.S. EPA issued strong final standards requiring facilities that produce polyvinyl chloride and copolymers (PVC) to reduce harmful air emissions. Final standards are based on currently available technologies and will reduce emissions of air toxics, such as dioxin and vinyl chloride. Facilities, which can choose most practical control technology/technique, will also have to monitor emissions. Read More

ASTM Fences Committee to develop post anchoring standard.

ASTM International Committee F14 on Fences welcomes participation in development of proposed standard, ASTM WK36054, Guide for Anchoring Steel Fence and Gate Posts in Lieu of Concrete Footings. Standard will detail efficient method for installing drive anchor systems that stabilize fences, flagpoles, sign posts, and other vertical elements such as columns. Method will eliminate cure time for cement, reduce mess at installation site, and prevent frost jacking on concrete. Read More

Developed by Subcommittee C26.13 on Spent Fuel and High Level Waste, part of ASTM International Committee C26 on Nuclear Fuel Cycle, ASTM C1752 provides guidelines for gathering data from measurement and calculation of physical and rheological properties of radioactive solutions, slurries, and sludges. NAM Senior VP for Policy and Government Relations Aric Newhouse, in support of Sen. James Inhofe's (R-OK) "resolution of disapproval" through Congressional Review Act to repeal EPA's Utility MACT rule, said such an action "will help give manufacturers more certainty while stopping an extremely harmful regulation." ANSI approves IESO/RIA 6001-2011 standard.

ANSI has approved IESO/RIA 6001-2011 Evaluation of HVAC Interior Surfaces to Determine the Presence of Fire-Related Particulate as a Result of a Fire in a Structure. Standard uses char as primary indicator and soot as secondary indicator of fire-related particulate, and also requires quantification of char/soot concentrations to allow comparisons with control sample. It does not determine what materials have been burned or what materials have been deposited on surface. Read More

EPRI to demonstrate Utility Direct Fast Charger technology.

On Feb 23, 2012, EPRI will demonstrate first prototype 2.4 kV 45 kVA-based, solid-state, DC fast charging technology for electric vehicles, which is expected to achieve overall efficiency of 96-97%. Utility Direct Fast Charger technology will enable rapid charging of plug-in electric vehicles and can also serve as utility-owned distribution asset that can be used for other electricity delivery purposes. New Cingular Wireless Settlement resolves violations of EPCRA.

February 21, 2012

U.S. EPA announced an agreement with New Cingular Wireless to resolve violations of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act. New Cingular Wireless voluntarily disclosed reporting violations to EPA, which related to presence of sulfuric acid, diesel, and lead at 642 cellular facilities in 35 states and Puerto Rico, after performing comprehensive audit of their operations. Under settlement, New Cingular Wireless will pay civil penalty of $125,728. Read More

NAM President comments on transportation and energy legislation.

NAM's Jay Timmons urged House of Representatives members to support H.R. 7, the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act of 2012, noting provisions that expand domestic energy production. Citing job creation and access to affordable energy sources, Timmons told House members to "take a stand" for energy security and manufacturing workers.
