PACK EXPO 2012 to highlight pharmaceutical packaging.

Demand for pharmaceutical packaging in U.S. is forecast to increase 5.3% annually through 2014. PACK EXPO International 2012, scheduled for Oct 28-31, will feature Pharmaceutical Pavilion with latest advances in cartoning and labeling, filling and inspection systems as well as blister packaging, flexible pouches, tubes, and closures. EPA awards more than $1 million to college teams.

EPA awarded more than $1 million in grants to 15 university/college teams who participated in 8th Annual National Sustainable Design Expo. EPA's People, Prosperity and the Planet competition featured more than 300 college innovators showcasing sustainable projects designed to protect environment, encourage economic growth, and use natural resources more efficiently. Each winning team will receive up to $90,000 to further develop design, apply it to real world applications, or move it to market. Read More

ANSI invites all members to recommend qualified candidates for 2013 ANSI Board of Directors, which is responsible for management and control of activities, property, and affairs of ANSI, including strategic direction of Institute, annual budget, and responsibilities of Board and Institute Committees and Councils. NYC Recognizes ANSI Accreditation in new licensing requirements.

May 8, 2012

City of New York recognized ANSI's Accreditation Program for Personnel Certification Bodies as part of licensing and testing requirements for all crane operators in NYC. New license applicants, as of May 1, 2012, must obtain certification from specified group of crane operator certification bodies, demonstrating they have passed written and practical exams that reliably test for adequate knowledge and experience using appropriate crane model. SME Foundation supports students' humanitarian efforts.

On June 19th, group of 15 pre-engineering students from Calera High School, Calera, AL, will be "Children Changing the World," traveling to Clinic of the Angels in the Honduran Cloud Forest. Accompanied by technology education instructor, Brian Copes and Adam D. Williams, Certified-Prosthetics, and owner of Next Step, Inc., team will teach locals how to build 2 basic utility vehicles, and help Williams fit 15 local amputees with prosthetic legs that he helped students learn to design and build. NIST Researchers develop way to generate superluminal pulses.

May 7, 2012

Researchers at NIST have developed technique called 4-wave mixing, which reshapes parts of light pulses and advances them ahead of where they would have been had they been left to travel unaltered through vacuum. In experiment, pulses' peaks arrived 50 nanoseconds faster than light traveling through vacuum. New method could be used to improve timing of communications signals and to investigate propagation of quantum correlations. Read More

Hess to Resolve Clean Air Act Violations at NJ refinery.

May 4, 2012

As announced by U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice, Hess Corporation has agreed to pay $850,000 civil penalty and spend over $45 million in new pollution controls to resolve Clean Air Act violations at its Port Reading, NJ refinery. Controls required by settlement are estimated to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx) by 181 tons per year and result in additional reductions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Read More

Open Source Simulation Software analyzes geomagnetically induced currents.

May 4, 2012

In joint effort, North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Department of Energy (DOE), and EPRI developed simulation tool for electric industry to analyze geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) on their systems. This software, which is open-source code, is capable of performing N-phase modeling; analysis is not limited to 3-phase systems. Functionality lets users dynamically change circuit parameters and modify input, enabling long-term (hours or days) analysis of GMDs. Read More

Communications Protocol enables secure, wireless biometric data acquisition.

NIST researchers developed and published protocol for communicating with biometric sensors over wired and wireless networks that uses some technologies that underpin Web. WS-Biometric Devices (WS-BD) protocol lets desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones access sensors that capture biometric data using Web services. Using 950 automated test cases and 8,300 individual verification points, HART DDL/EDDL Host Test Suite v2.0 enables suppliers and developers of host products to test compliance of HART implementation. Suite includes Encoded Test DDs that are updated to align with current Test Specifications; test report spreadsheets for documenting test results; preliminary DD Host Test and Registration Procedure; improved Xmtr-MV v2.5; and other ancillary files needed to facilitate HART DDL/EDDL host testing.
