AMT Comments on successful test/demonstration of MTConnect.

MTConnect®, open-source standard for collecting and communicating real-time information from manufacturing processes and factory floor equipment, has been successfully demonstrated and tested by manufacturing researchers at NIST. AMT President Douglas Woods called this "a giant step forward in resolving manufacturing interoperability issues." Woods also stressed imperative nature of seamless communications amongst disparate pieces of manufacturing technology equipment and devices. Read More

Proposed Concrete Standard characterizes drying behavior.

Developed by Subcommittee C09.66 on Concrete’s Resistance to Fluid Penetration, part of Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, ASTM WK37029 will be used by ready-mix concrete producers to characterize drying behavior of new and existing concrete mixture proportions. Purpose of standard is to provide information on mass loss versus time (drying) behavior of initially saturated concrete specimen exposed to 1-dimensional drying in controlled temperature and relative humidity environment. Manufacturing Technology Orders level off for April.

According to data reported by companies participating in USMTO program, April U.S. Manufacturing Technology Orders totaled $372.50 million, which was down 26.6% from March and down 12.6% when compared with $426.44 million reported for April 2012. With year-to-date total of $1,650.91 million, 2013 is down 7.0% compared with 2012. Likewise, Purchasing Manager’s Index dropped below 50 – indicating contraction within manufacturing – but hiring continued to expand throughout the industry. Read More

NREL highlights 2012 utility green power leaders.

NREL released its assessment of leading utility green power programs. Under these voluntary programs, residential/commercial consumers can support additional electricity production from renewable resources, such as wind and solar. Ranked by renewable energy sales, Portland General Electric overtook Austin Energy in 2012, selling largest amount of renewable energy in nation. Green power sales of top 10 utility programs by sales exceeded 4.2 million MWh in 2012, up from 3.9 million MWh in 2010. Read More

BIO supports biosimilars legislation.

BIO and the Delaware BioScience Association commend Delaware State Senate for introducing legislation designed to address regulatory issues related to the interchangeability of biological medicines. Biosimilars are not generics, and even slight changes to biologic drug can change its properties entirely. Senate Bill 118 seeks to properly preserve physician-patient relationship, protect patient access to accurate prescription information, and promote competitive market for biologic therapies. BIO Applauds Senate Passage of 2013 Farm Bill.

BIO thanked Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Thad Cochran (R-MS) and applauded Senate for including mandatory funding for Energy Title programs and eligibility for renewable chemicals in Farm Bill reauthorization legislation. In comment, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood said reauthorization of Farm Bill energy programs and mandatory funding for energy title will help U.S. industrial biotech companies innovate and develop new products. EPA Awards $4.3+ Million for climate and air quality research.

June 11, 2013

U.S. EPA announced over $4.3 million in grants to 13 institutions to study and improve understanding of how certain organic compounds form in atmosphere. Research performed by grantees will help federal government improve its air quality management systems and climate change models with respect to organic aerosol formation. Efforts will also help EPA continue its work of protecting people’s health and environment. EPA is also contributing staff scientists to work as part of this effort. Read More

Legislation Creates Pathway for substitution of biologic drugs.

Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber was commended by BIO and Oregon Bioscience Association (Oregon Bio) for signing legislation designed to address regulatory issues related to biological medicine interchangeability. Policies outlined in House Bill 2705 and Senate Bill 460 align with all 5 of BIO's principles on biologic substitution. Furthermore, BIO and Oregon Bio commended actions of the Oregon Legislative Assembly for unanimously passing these bills. Read More
