In many testing laboratories, it can be necessary to qualify new test method, instrument, or lab itself with respect to one or more performance characteristics. ASTM WK37659, Guide for Testing for Bias Equivalency in the Laboratory, will provide guidance on proper design of equivalence studies, including proper numbers of tests required, assistance in deciding what constitutes sufficient agreement, and selection of proper statistical test for evaluating data. ZigBee Certified Product Availability surpasses 500.

ZigBee® Alliance announced that there are more than 500 ZigBee Certified products available to the market, a 60% surge since August 2011. Sparked by early market success with ZigBee Home Automation and ZigBee Smart Energy, ZigBee standards play role in products developed by more than 350 global manufacturers. A report issued by ABI Research shows ZigBee is the most widely-used IEEE 802.15.4 technology, accounting for 40% of total shipments in 2012 and growing to over 50% by 2015. Read More

Medical Gas Training helps prevent medical gas mix-ups.

In his "Medical Gas Training For Drivers" article for Welding and Gases Today, GAWDA's FDA and Medical Gases Consultant Thomas L. Badstubner details appropriate driver training for medical gases. Recommendations include that drivers delivering medical gases be trained on FDA's Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP). Also, FDA recommends cGMP training to be presented in multiple, manageable sessions held throughout year (at minimum once/year). Read More

Voluntary Standards address MOHUVs and magnet wire.

Recently published, ANSI/OPEI B71.9-2012, American National Standard for Multipurpose Off-Highway Utility Vehicles, defines standards for utility vehicles that reach speeds of 25-50 mph and specifically addresses MOHUVs capable of use in diverse scenarios. NEMA recently released ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2011, Magnet Wire, reflecting magnet wire (winding wire) end user requirements and manufacturing technologies. New Standard Approved for detection analysis for hit/miss data.

ASTM E2862, Practice for Probability of Detection Analysis for Hit/Miss Data, provides necessary background and describes step-by-step process for analyzing nondestructive testing hit/miss data resulting from probability of detection (POD) examination, including minimum requirements for validating the resulting POD curve. ANSI submits comments to NARA on Federal Register notice.

On February 27, 2012, Office of the Federal Register announced public comment period on petition filed by group of academics to amend National Archives and Records Administration's regulations governing approval of agency requests to incorporate materials by reference into Code of Federal Regulations. In its role as coordinator of U.S. standards and conformity assessment system, ANSI developed and submitted its response on behalf of the standardization community. Read More

NASA's Johnson Space Center has partnered with Houston Independent School District's Booker T. Washington High School to enable students in school's engineering magnet program to work on NASA projects associated with Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Directorate through HUNCH program. Students will learn about and study realistic problems related to NASA's spaceflight and research programs, and create hardware prototypes and simulated space hardware for NASA's review and use. Updated SAE International trailer towing standards determine trailer weight rating of all tow-vehicles and maintain fair competition among manufacturers. Requiring vehicles to be tested under consistent conditions and parameters, SAE standard J2807, Performance Requirements for Determining Tow-Vehicle Gross Combination Weight Rating and Trailer Weight Rating, defines performance requirements for measuring vehicle's gross combination weight rating (GCWR) and trailer weight rating (TWR). AASHTO Executive Director John Horsley issued statement regarding inability of House and Senate Conference Committee to reach agreement on surface transportation bill. According to Horsley, thousands of jobs will be lost unless House and Senate can put politics aside and move forward on a highway and transit bill. Without bill, America's surface transportation programs will shut down July 1 and next year, drastic cutbacks will need to be made because of revenue shortfall in Highway Trust Fund. Read More

Panel of 16 judges from industry, government, and national laboratories declared University of Maryland's team, with 91% of available points, as Grand Prize winner of won 2012 Hydrogen Student Design Contest. Electroindustry Business Confidence Index points to growth.

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions decreased to 54.2 in May from 59.1 in April and 18.3 points cumulatively since February's post-recession high. Despite this decline, results continue to point to economic environment conducive to industry growth. EBCI for future North American conditions also lowered in May, off 11 points from April, but remained in positive territory at 70.8. Read More
