NIST and ASM Collaborate on structural materials data project.

July 8, 2013

NIST Material Measurement Laboratory and ASM International have formed Structural Materials Data Demonstration Project. Leveraging overlapping interests and strengths, this collaboration will establish data repository focused on metallic structural materials. Data repository will support data for use at number of length scales, and open access will provide materials digital data community with resource for data analytics and informatics, modeling and simulation, and educational purposes. IPC Issues Call for awards nominations.

IPC announced Call for Awards Nominations to recognize volunteers who contribute their time and expertise to IPC standards development and other vital IPC activities. Industry members are encouraged to highlight special achievements of their companies and their colleagues by nominating them for one or more awards, which will be presented at IPC Fall Standards Development Committee Meetings during week of October 12, 2013 in Ft. NREL reports 31.1% efficiency for III-V solar cell.

NREL has announced world record of 31.1% conversion efficiency for 2-junction solar cell under one sun of illumination. Made of gallium indium phosphide cell atop gallium arsenide cell, tandem unit has area of about 0.25 cm² and was measured under AM1.5 global spectrum at 1,000 W/m². Cell is covered on front with bilayer anti-reflection coating, and on back with highly reflective gold contact layer. Work was done at NREL as part of DOE's Foundation Program to Advance Cell Efficiency. Read More

Paper in Optics Express describes hope for patients with AMD.

As reported via their paper "Switchable telescopic contact lens" in OSA's open-access journal Optics Express, team of DARPA-funded researchers from USA and Switzerland, led by University of California San Diego Professor Joseph Ford, have created slim, telescopic contact lens that can switch between normal and magnified vision. With refinements, this system could offer age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients way to enhance their vision. Read More

Nanotechnology Standard facilitates data exchange.

ASTM E2909, Guide for Investigation/Study/Assay Tab-Delimited Format for Nanotechnologies, will facilitate submission and exchange of nanomaterial descriptions and characterization data among individual researchers. It is hoped that ASTM E2909 will empower organizations to adopt standard methods for presenting data in nanotechnology publications, as well as provide researchers with guidelines for representing nanomaterials and characterizations to achieve cross-material comparison. MESA announces first date of B2MML program.

On September 9, MESA International is offering its first ever B2MML & Integration Fundamentals program.
