Committee C07 on Lime marks 100 years of standards development.

April 13, 2012

In addition to standards development meetings, Committee C07 on Lime will hold dinner on June 27 to mark anniversary, with speakers who will provide perspectives on C07 and its history. Symposium on "Lime: Building on the 100-Year Legacy of ASTM Committee C07," will be held on June 28, and will feature papers highlighting variety of lime uses. Coinciding with anniversary will also be release of ASTM compilation, "ASTM Standards for Limestone and Lime Products and Their Applications, 2nd Edition." Read More

EPA to allow 15% renewable fuel in gasoline.

April 13, 2012

EPA approved applications for registration of ethanol in making gasoline that contains up to 15% ethanol - known as E15. For over 30 years, ethanol has been blended into gasoline, but law limited it to 10% by volume. Registration of ethanol to make E15 is significant step toward production, sale, and use in 2001 and newer gasoline-fueled cars/light trucks. To enable widespread use of E15, Obama Administration set goal to help fueling station owners install 10,000 blender pumps over next 5 years. Read More

Recovery Transformer Program produces EHV replacement prototype.

As part of a consortium, EPRI has helped develop prototype transformer that can replace damaged/destroyed transformer in ~1 week, instead of several months, to prevent sustained power outages. Prototype is known as a Recovery Transformer (RecX) and located at CenterPoint Energy substation for testing. Goal of RecX Program is to increase resilience of USA's electric transmission grid by reducing recovery time associated with extra high voltage (EHV) transformer outages. Read More

ANSI Meeting to address Energy Efficiency Standards Panel.

Hosted by ANSI, exploratory meeting on April 25 will examine need for potential ANSI Energy Efficiency Standards Panel. Purpose of meeting is to gather input from stakeholders as to areas where ANSI standards panel would be most beneficial in coordinating U.S. approach to energy efficiency standardization activities. ANSI-HSSP Workshop to explore federal CBRNE standards strategy.

Workshop on CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives) Standards, hosted by ANSI-HSSP, will take place on May 31, 2012. It will provide overview of national strategy and status of related work being done in federal government. Specifically, workshop will focus on implementation of national strategy by private-sector stakeholders and include feedback from implementers. ASTM Compilation covers uncertainty in fire standards.

Available in print and as e-book, STP 1541, Uncertainty in Fire Standards and What to Do About It, compiles 11 peer-reviewed papers on issues related to uncertainty in fire standards and how different parties incorporate uncertainty into their use of results from fire safety tests and calculations. RIA Immediate Past President wins Martin L. King Award.

RIA presented Martin L. King Award to Frank Headen, CR, WLS, CMH, at its annual Leadership Summit and Industry Expo. Given annually, award recognizes individual's exceptional service and dedication to restoration industry. Headen was involved in restoration efforts at the Pentagon and World Trade Centers following 9-11; NASA facilities at Kennedy Space Center; and FBI Headquarters and Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Manufacturing Technology Orders continue to rise in 2012.

According to United States Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) report, February U.S. manufacturing technology orders totaled $444.06 million. This total is up 9.3% from January and 35.2% compared with February 2011. AMT's report also breaks down U.S. manufacturing technology orders on regional basis for 5 geographic areas of USA. NEMA commends Maryland law for CO detection in schools.

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley (D) signed NEMA-backed legislation into law to require installation of carbon monoxide detectors in new and substantially remodeled public schools in the state. According to NEMA Government Relations Manager, Sarah A. Owen, enactment of law will help ensure that children, faculty, and support staff are protected from CO dangers while they are away from home. SPE Scholarships are offered for automotive composites research.

Organizing committee for SPE® Automotive Composites Conference and Exhibition (SPE ACCE) announced availability of two $2,000 USD scholarships for graduate-level research in polymer composites that has impact on ground transportation. Interested students should submit scholarship application form by July 1, 2012, and awards will be announced in August. Scholarships are funded by proceeds from previous SPE ACCE conferences and donations by SPE Composites and Automotive Divisions. Read More

Since inception of GAWDA Gives Back in 2000, members of GAWDA have donated almost $1.2 million to deserving charities throughout country. In article titled "How GAWDA Gave Back," Welding and Gases Today revisited recipients to find out how members' donations were put to use. In 2009, GAWDA teamed up with WINGS (Women Involved in Nurturing, Giving, Sharing) to help fund treatment for women diagnosed with breast cancer who are uninsured or can't afford cost of treatment. Dynamic Testing of Soil and Rock is subject of an ASTM symposium.

Scheduled for June 28-29, symposium on Dynamic Testing of Soil and Rock: Field and Laboratory will consist of presentations dealing with laboratory testing using bender elements, resonant column torsional shear, cyclic direct simple shear, piezoelectric crystals, and cyclic triaxial equipment.
