Research Summary provides results from solar storm activity.

EPRI measures geo-magnetically induced currents through its SUNBURST program, a system of strategically positioned monitoring sites throughout U.S. and Canada. It uses data from that system, to provide guidance to utilities on keeping power delivery system functioning during solar storms. According to EPRI, nation's grid system was largely unaffected as 2-day solar storm pummeled Earth starting March 8 with massive blast of plasma that was ejected from the sun at as much as 4 million mph. AAMA requests openness and transparency in regulatory process.

AAMA sent letter to U.S. House Judiciary Committee requesting approval of Sunshine for Regulatory Decrees and Settlements Act of 2012 (H.R. 3862). Legislation would require early disclosure of proposed consent decrees and regulatory settlements, providing affected parties with proper notice. Bill would also make it possible for affected parties to participate in settlement negotiations by requiring federal agencies to take public comment prior to entry of consent decree with court. Dhuanne Dodrill, president of Rollprint Packaging Products Inc., is new chair of ASTM International Committee F02 on Flexible Barrier Packaging. Member of ASTM International since 1996, Dodrill also serves on Committee D10 on Packaging and has 25+ years of experience in flexible packaging industry. She has held various technical, QA, and management positions. She joined Rollprint Packaging Products in 1982 and served as VP of technology and executive VP before assuming her current role. NIST is set to support steering group for NSTIC.

NIST is soliciting proposals to establish steering group in support of National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) and to provide group with ongoing secretarial, administrative, and logistical support. NIST anticipates supporting one proposal with approximately $2 million in funding for up to 2 years. NASA and GM collaborate on robotic gloves for human use.

NASA and GM are developing robotic glove that astronauts and autoworkers can wear to help do their jobs better while potentially reducing risk of repetitive stress injuries. Human Grasp Assist device, known internally as K-glove or Robo-Glove, resulted from NASA and GM's Robonaut 2 project. Using sensors, actuators, and tendons comparable to nerves, muscles, and tendons in human hand, Robo-Glove has potential to reduce amount of force worker needs to exert when operating tool for extended time. Composite Materials Committee elects Adam Sawicki as chairman.

ASTM International Committee D30 on Composite Materials named Adam Sawicki, technical fellow at Boeing Co., as chairman. Member of ASTM International since 2000, Sawicki also chairs D30.90 Executive Subcommittee and has served as recording secretary and vice chairman of D30. Committee has recognized his contributions with Distinguished Service Award in 2006 and Awards of Appreciation in 2007 and 2009. NTIA seeks public input on consumer data privacy issues.

In March 5 Federal Register notice, National Telecommunications and Information Administration is requesting comment on substantive consumer data privacy issues that warrant development of legally enforceable codes of conduct, as well as procedures to foster development of codes. NTIA seeks comments on what issues should be addressed, including mobile apps, cloud computing services, accountability mechanisms, online services directed toward teenagers/children, and trusted identity systems. NIST releases technical guidance for evaluating EHRs.

NIST has outlined formal procedures for evaluating usability of Electronic Health Records systems. Proposed usability protocol encourages user-centered approach to development of EHR systems. It provides methods to measure and address critical errors in user performance before those systems are deployed in medical setting. Three-step process consists of an analysis of how application functions, expert review, and validation testing of user interface to make sure it works as intended. Read More

Proposed ASTM Standard measures dryness of propane.

Wet propane can cause operational issues in customer equipment and in downstream processes for refineries, producers, pipeline operators, terminals, and chemical plants. Proposed ASTM WK35244, Test Method for Determination of Water Content of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Using Electronic Moisture Analyzers, is under jurisdiction of ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and will be used for measuring dryness of propane.
