Joe Robbins receives ASTM Award of Merit.

Joe S. Robbins III, CEO of Arizona Desert Testing LLC, has received ASTM's Award of Merit from Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability. A member of ASTM since 1984, Robbins is current chairman of G03. In 1998, he co-founded Arizona Desert Testing LLC, a materials testing laboratory that specializes in accelerated and outdoor weathering services. Prior to that, he held various engineering roles at DSET Laboratories Inc., including chief engineer, manager of weathering division, and president. Read More

Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative, a joint initiative of ANSI and NIST, will holds its next meeting on July 17. The meeting will focus on identifying and responding to current needs of nuclear industry and standards that can facilitate its growth and development. DOE Appliance Standards promise energy savings, choice diversity.

On May 16, Department of Energy (DOE) announced energy efficiency standards - informed by feedback from manufacturers, consumer groups, and environmental advocates - for residential clothes washers and dishwashers. Front- and top-loading clothes washers, respectively will be required to reduce energy consumption by 15% and 33% and water use by 35% and 19% by 2015. Dishwashers will be required to use 15% less energy and 20% less water by 2013. Read More

May 2012 Business Conditions Report has been released by PMA.

According to May 2012 PMA Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies expect softening in business conditions during next 3 months; only 24% of participants anticipated improvement in economic activity. Metalforming companies also forecast downward trend in incoming orders, with only 34% anticipating increase. Average daily shipping levels declined in May, with 44% reporting same shipping levels as 3 months ago and 19% reporting decrease. Read More

NIBS buildingSMART alliance(TM) has released consensus-based standard governing building information modeling for use in the U.S. NBIMS-US(TM) V2 covers full life cycle of buildings - from planning, design, and construction to operations and sustainment. Part of international effort, standard will serve as kick-off point for other countries around the world to adopt as their own BIM standard. IPC releases PCB industry results for April 2012.

According to IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 3.6% in April 2012 from April 2011, and bookings decreased 8.6% year over year. Book-to-bill ratio for rigid PCB industry remained above parity at 1.03. Flexible circuit shipments in April 2012 were down 13.8%, and bookings were down 5.2% compared to April 2011. Flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio remained high at 1.16. For rigid and flexible circuits combined, shipments decreased 4.5% from April 2011. Read More

BIO Applauds EPA Rejection of retroactive waiver for 2011 RFS.

BIO expressed support for EPA's denial of January 2012 petition by petroleum industry representatives to retroactively waive 2011 cellulosic biofuel Renewable Volume Obligation under Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). In his statement, BIO's Brent Erickson noted how lobbyists for oil refining industry "continue to try to throw regulatory obstacles in the way of the advanced biofuel industry" and applauded EPA for its firm stance against such efforts. John DeLisi is named as new Director of Office of Aviation Safety. .

As announced by NTSB Chairman Deborah A. P. Hersman, John DeLisi will start serving as Director of Office of Aviation Safety (OAS) on June 2, 2012. "With more than two decades of outstanding accident investigation experience," said Hersman, "John has made significant contributions to safety and to the NTSB." DeLisi has served as Deputy Director of OAS since 2007. During his 20 years with NTSB, he has overseen numerous major investigations. Read More

Motors Shipments Index shows stability during 1Q 2012.

NEMA Motors Shipments Index increased 0.8% from previous quarter, which follows 4.1% gain posted in 4Q 2011. Since bottoming out in 2Q 2009, index has climbed cumulative 47% and topped pre-recession high for 4 straight quarters. Beyond short-term production surge in late 2011/early 2012, manufacturing activity is decelerating from post-recession pace to more sustainable level in line with long-run industry output trends; output growth is seen tapering to average of 3.4% in 2012 and 2013. Bearing Specialists Association (BSA) announced three upcoming events. Co-located with ABMA's Fall Meeting, 2012 Fall Meeting in Chicago, IL is scheduled for September 24-25 at Hilton Suites Chicago/Magnificent Mile. Individual event schedules have been timed to avoid overlap. BSA Distributor Survey shows solid gains in 2011.

BSA Annual Distributor Survey revealed aggregate sales volume increased 14.7% in 2011 over 2010 volume. According to Motion Industries President and CEO Bill Stevens, who reported for BSA, firms responding to BSA Distributor Survey represented 90% of value of bearings sold through BSA members. Additional results revealed aggregate number of employees increased 3.5% in 2011. EPA announced that the National Academy of Sciences will conduct comprehensive review of agency's Integrated Risk Information System program's assessment development process, and changes that are currently being made or planned by EPA in response to NAS' April 2011 recommendations. QEP Field Services agrees to pay $4 million for EPA violations.

U.S. EPA and Department of Justice announced settlement with QEP Field Services Co. to resolve alleged violations of Clean Air Act at 5 natural gas compressor stations on Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Utah. Under proposed settlement, QEPFS will pay $3.65 million civil penalty and $350,000 into Clean Air Trust Fund. Settlement also requires QEPFS to reduce emissions by removing certain equipment, installing additional pollution controls, and replacing natural gas powered instrument controls. Read More
