NIST Workshop addresses imaging in tissue engineering.

NIST, in cooperation with Multi-Agency Tissue Engineering Science working group, is sponsoring 2-day workshop titled, Functional Imaging for Regenerative Medicine, which will explore how cutting-edge imaging techniques can advance equally fast-growing field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Located on NIST campus in Boulder, CO and at new X-Wing at JILA, Precision Measurement Laboratory for high-precision science and measurements supports technology innovation and economic growth as well as training of future scientists. Both laboratories tightly control environmental conditions such as vibration and temperature, as is required for cutting-edge research with lasers, atomic clocks, and nanotechnology. ITA supports increased demand for titanium welding training.

On June 26, International Titanium Association will sponsor 1-day workshop, titled "How to Weld Titanium." Workshop will discuss various techniques of titanium joining and will primarily focus on GTAW, or TIG method. Specific topics to be covered include preparation for welding, cutting and cleaning; setup and correct titanium techniques; post-welding; quality control; stress relieving; and welding safety. International Swimming Pool and Spa Code(TM) optimizes safety.

In collaboration with Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, International Code Council has published International Swimming Pool and Spa Code(TM), which uses prescriptive and performance-related provisions to establish minimum safety requirements for public and residential pools, spas, and hot tubs. It is first to address aquatic recreation facilities as well as first to include ANSI/APSP energy standards for residential portable electric spas and residential in-ground pools and spas. Read More

Standardization Workshop looks at global water challenges.

ISO's International Workshop on Water will examine ways international standardization can help alleviate needs of global populous who have no regular access to safe drinking water and those who live without proper sanitation. Hosted by JISC in Kobe, Japan on July 25-26 of 2012, workshop will raise awareness of water-related standardization and its potentials, propose and examine standardization initiatives, as well as identify priorities and define recommended action plan. ASTM launches Supplier's Declaration of Conformity.

Responding to increasing requests from suppliers and their customers, ASTM International has developed Supplier's Declaration of Conformity. Program will benefit suppliers by enabling them to provide evidence to customers regarding conforming to ASTM test methods. Product test results will be registered with ASTM, and supporting documentation will show supplier's registration and acceptance by independent third party. Read More

Dr. Kenneth St. John receives ASTM Award of Merit.

Kenneth St. John, Ph.D., associate professor at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MI, received Award of Merit from ASTM International Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices. Member of ASTM International since 1980, St. John works on several F04 subcommittees, including U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ISO/TC 150 on Implants for Surgery. He currently serves as chairman of Subcommittees F04.16 on Biocompatability Test Methods and F04.92 on Planning. Read More

April 2012 MCI-EFI shows slowly growing industry confidence.

Designed to collect leadership data, April 2012 Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) reports qualitative assessment of prevailing business conditions as well as future expectations. Overall, confidence in equipment finance market is 62.1, up from March's 61.7, while fourth consecutive month of increases indicates slow but steady rise in optimism. EPA issues updated, achievable air pollution standards.

In response to court deadline, U.S. EPA has finalized standards, required by Clean Air Act, to reduce harmful air pollution associated with oil and natural gas production. Updated EPA standards include first federal air rules for natural gas wells that are hydraulically fractured, specifically requiring operators of new fractured natural gas wells to use cost-effective technologies and practices to capture natural gas that might otherwise escape the well, which can subsequently be sold. AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey commented on Defense Department assessment concerning implications of normalizing export controls on satellites and related components. According to Blakey, this report provides decision makers in Congress "crucial information" regarding how reform can serve to strengthen the USA's national security and space industrial base. ANSI approves air curtain testing standard.

April 23, 2012

AMCA announced that ANSI's Board of Standards Review approved ANSI/AMCA Standard 220-05(R2012), which may be used to establish uniform methods for laboratory testing of air curtains to determine aerodynamic performance in terms of air flow rate, outlet air velocity uniformity, power consumption, and air velocity projection, for rating or guarantee purposes. PMMI and the Operational Reliability Solutions Group of the Alliance for Innovation and Operational Excellence released whitepaper titled "Overall Equipment Effectiveness: Guidelines for the CPG Industry and Their Suppliers." According to report, monitoring OEE metrics provides opportunity to improve processes, reduce rejects and rework, and enable consistent delivery of higher quality products.
