ANSI approves air curtain testing standard.

AMCA announced that ANSI's Board of Standards Review approved ANSI/AMCA Standard 220-05(R2012), which may be used to establish uniform methods for laboratory testing of air curtains to determine aerodynamic performance in terms of air flow rate, outlet air velocity uniformity, power consumption, and air velocity projection, for rating or guarantee purposes. Standard is not intended to specify testing procedures to be used for design, production, or field testing. Read More

AIOE Group issues OEE roadmap.

PMMI and the Operational Reliability Solutions Group of the Alliance for Innovation and Operational Excellence released whitepaper titled "Overall Equipment Effectiveness: Guidelines for the CPG Industry and Their Suppliers." According to report, monitoring OEE metrics provides opportunity to improve processes, reduce rejects and rework, and enable consistent delivery of higher quality products. University of Florida Student receives ASTM scholarship.

Amy Adams, an undergraduate materials science and engineering student at the University of Florida, has received the Mary R. Norton Memorial Scholarship from ASTM International Committee E04 on Metallography. Award encourages female students to pursue study of physical metallurgy or materials science. Adams' studies are focused on metals, and her research is on serial sectioning and 3D reconstruction to study microstructural evolution of pure metals during grain growth. Read More

Herbert W. Koch receives ASTM International Award of Merit.

ASTM International Committee A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products has presented the Award of Merit to Herbert W. Koch, quality manager at Harris Steel Co., Cicero, IL. A member of ASTM International since 1985, Koch is past chairman of Committee A05 and currently serves as recording secretary. He was honored with the Kenneth J. Boedecker Jr. Distinguished Service Award from the committee in 2002. Read More

Revised Standard addresses laboratory testing of dampers.

ANSI's Board of Standards Review approved ANSI/AMCA Standard 500-D-2012, "Laboratory Methods of Testing Dampers for Rating", which determines air leakage, pressure drop, dynamic closure, operational torque, and thermal efficiency. Tests that are conducted in accordance with requirements of this standard are intended to demonstrate design, production, or field testing of damper and are not intended to determine or establish min/max performance ratings to be used for specifying these products. Clean Water Act Agreement struck with city of Memphis, TN.

April 20, 2012

U.S. EPA, U.S. Department of Justice, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, and Office of the Tennessee Attorney General announced Clean Water Act (CWA) settlement with City of Memphis, TN. At estimated cost of $250 million, Memphis agreed to make improvements to its sewer systems to eliminate unauthorized overflows of untreated raw sewage. NASA Provides Support for ISS-based commercial testing.

Researchers will be able to expose experiments to weightlessness and vacuum of space using commercial platform outside of International Space Station (ISS). To be developed and operated by NanoRacks LLC, External Platform Program (EPP) will take advantage of only orbiting lab that offers long-term, repeat access to unique environment of unpressurized space. EPA Proposes Electronic Reporting Rule for chemical information.

April 20, 2012

U.S. EPA proposed rule to require electronic reporting for certain information submitted to agency under Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). Aimed at increasing transparency and public access to information, proposed rule would require electronic reporting rather than paper-based reporting for various TSCA actions. Finalization would mean that EPA could only accept data, reports, and other information submitted via EPA's Central Data Exchange. Read More

Revised Louver Testing Standard has been approved.

On March 19 of 2012, Board of Standards Review of ANSI has approved ANSI/AMCA 500-L-2012, Laboratory Methods of Testing Louvers for Performance Rating. This ANSI/AMCA Standard, which establishes uniform laboratory test methods for louvers, determines such characteristics as air leakage, pressure drop, water penetration, wind driven rain, and operational torque. Tests conducted in accordance with requirements of this standard are intended to demonstrate performance of louver. Read More

EPA Lists Cities in USA with most Energy Star buildings.

U.S. EPA released list of 25 U.S. metropolitan areas with most Energy StarĀ®-certified buildings for 2011. List is headed by Los Angeles; Washington, D.C.; Atlanta; Chicago; San Francisco; New York; Houston; Dallas; Riverside, CA; and Boston. By end of 2011, nearly 16,500 Energy Star-certified buildings across USA have helped save near $2.3 billion in annual utility bills and prevent greenhouse gas emissions equal to emissions from annual energy use of more than 1.5 million homes.
