Ten ASTM Water Standards included in EPA final rule.

Ten standards developed by ASTM International Committee D19 on Water have been included in final rule published in Code of Federal Regulations by U.S. EPA to approve methods for measuring regulated pollutants in wastewater. Many standards in Methods Update Rule are either new or revised standards for analysis of cyanides in water. Implementing technology and chemistries that are less susceptible to matrix interferences, new ASTM standards enable more accurate results. Read More

ASTM International approves carpet adhesives standard.

ASTM D7799, Specification for Tufted and Woven Broadloom Carpet Adhesives Without Homogenous PVC or Non-PVC Backings, was developed by Subcommittee D14.70 on Construction Adhesives, part of ASTM International Committee D14 on Adhesives. Specification establishes minimum requirements for adhesives used for installation of tufted or woven broadloom carpet, within climate controlled structure, when adhered directly and permanently to structurally sound and recommended substrate. NIST Releases Final Version of Bluetooth security guide.

NIST has issued final version of Guide to Bluetooth Security (NIST Special Publication 800-121 Rev. 1), which describes security capabilities of technologies based on Bluetooth and gives recommendations on effectively securing such devices. Changes include update to vulnerability mitigation information for "Secure Simple Pairing" as well as introduction of Bluetooth version 3.0 High Speed and Bluetooth version 4.0 Low Energy security mechanisms and recommendations. The Vision Show launched new products and programs in Boston.

Held May 8-10, The Vision Show attracted some 2,100 people from 20 countries. Event offered 4-day educational conference as well as AIA's Certified Vision Professional program in CVP-Basic and CVP-Advanced levels. AIA announced its AIA Certified System Integrator program and released Camera Link HS(TM), the next generation communications protocol standard. During show, exhibitor Teledyne DALSA (Canada) displayed their Falcon2 camera and Xcelera HS PX8 frame grabber, which utilize new standard. Read More

Organizations Seek Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award applicants total 39 for 2012. Seeking recognition for organizational performance excellence through innovation and improvement, each applicant will be evaluated by independent board of 478 examiners in 7 areas: leadership; strategic planning; operations focus; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; workforce focus; process management; and results. NAM Makes Statement on legislative solutions to NLRB overreach.

NAM VP for HR Policy Joe Trauger's statement supported amendments addressing recent National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) activity offered by Sen Lindsey Graham to Fiscal Year 2013 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. Trauger asserted that allowing "micro-unions" would foster hostile work environments for employees and employers alike, and that "ambush elections" rule eliminates preparation time needed to make important decisions. IPC Members meet with EPA on proposed changes to DSW rule.

June 14, 2012

Leaders of IPC's EHS Committee met with senior EPA staff to discuss regulatory relief for printed board manufacturing. Uncertainty around implementation of 2008 Definition of Solid Waste rule, combined with limitations of EPA's 2011 proposed rule, has inhibited recycling of wastewater treatment sludges from electroplating operations. IPC representatives urged director of EPA's Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery to encourage secondary materials recycling in revision of RCRA DSW rule. Read More

NAM Pushes Russia PNTR Legislation as exports booster.

June 14, 2012

NAM's Frank Vargo urged Congress to pass, "as soon as possible," Russia Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) legislation. Vargo called this bipartisan effort "a positive step toward opening a new market in Russia for U.S.-manufactured goods exports" and cited President's Export Council estimates that U.S. exports to Russia could double or triple over next few years. "If Congress fails to act," Vargo warned, "competitors will have an advantage in the $300 billion Russian import market." Read More

ANSI seeks comments on ISO compliance program standard.

Standards Australia, the Australian member body to ISO, has submitted proposal for new International Standard on guidelines for compliance programs. Based on existing Australian standard 3806-2006, Compliance programs, proposed new work item would provide principles and guidance for organizations designing, developing, implementing, maintaining, and improving effective compliance program. Course 205, ISO Secretariat Operations: Taking the Secret out of the Secretariat, will take place November 7 to edify stakeholders as to all aspects of successful ISO committee management. Wi-Fi Alliance® is finalizing certification program for Wi-Fi® devices to support display applications, and has defined a new mark to designate products that have passed certification. Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast(TM) devices make use of Wi-Fi connection to deliver A/V content from one device to another, without cables or connection to existing Wi-Fi network. EPA Grants will help clean up contaminated sites.

EPA announced $69.3 million in grants for new investments to provide communities with funding needed to clean and redevelop contaminated properties, boost local economies, and create jobs while protecting public health. According to EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, "These grants will be the first step in getting pollution out and putting jobs back into neighborhoods across the country."
