Butterfly Color Research may inspire hue-changing materials.

Physicists have uncovered how subtle differences in tiny crystals of butterfly wings create varied patterns of color even among closely related species. Discovery is reported in Optical Society's Optical Materials Express journal in paper titled "Iridescence and nano-structure differences in Papilio butterflies." If researchers can figure out how to replicate wings' light-manipulating properties, discovery could lead to new coatings for manufactured materials that could change color by design. ASTM invites papers for EIFS symposium.

Scheduled for Oct 5, 2014, symposium on Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems: Performance, Progress and Innovation, will be directed towards professionals who primarily make their livelihood in the EIFS industry and who depend on ASTM standards that govern this industry. Papers are solicited in variety of areas, including continuous insulation, energy codes and efficiency, fire performance, maintenance and facade inspection, fluid-applied air/water resistive barriers, sealants, and coatings. Awards Honor State DOTs for transportation projects.

Sponsored by AASHTO, AAA, and U.S. Chamber of Commerce, America's Transportation Awards competition recognizes best of America's transportation projects in 3 main categories. Mid America regional featured 12 project nominations from 7 mid-American states. Department of Transportation (DOT) of Indiana and Missouri took home awards in Ahead of Schedule category, DOTs in Minnesota and Indiana for Under Budget category, and DOTs of Michigan and Missouri for Best Use of Innovation category. EPA Seeks Input for revisions on existing uses of PCBs.

U.S. EPA seeks nominations from individuals who represent small businesses, small governments, and small not-for-profit organizations to provide input to federal panel that will explore changes to existing uses of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Panel will focus on EPA's development of proposed rule to revise or end existing authorized uses of PCBs as appropriate if conditions under which they were authorized 30+ years ago have changed.
