Proposed standard, ASTM WK36479, Practice for Uncertainty Evaluation of Calibration and Measurements with Pyranometers and Pyrheliometers, is being developed by Subcommittee G03.09 on Radiometry, part of Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability. Standard will improve accuracy and usefulness of radiometry-related uncertainty estimates in solar renewable energy applications, such as system performance and acceptance testing, resource assessment, and solar energy system design engineering. EPRI's Distribution System Simulator supports GIC simulation.

OpenDSS software is a comprehensive electrical power system simulation tool for electric utility industry, and supports nearly all frequency domain analyses commonly performed on electric utility power distribution systems. In joint effort with North American Electric Reliability Corporation and other utility participants, EPRI has improved capability of OpenDSS program to include simulation of geomagnetically induced currents in network transmission systems. BIO Asks House Committee to extend critical tax provisions.

BIO submitted statement to House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures for hearing on "Certain Expiring Tax Provisions." As written in his testimony, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood noted the "tremendous potential" of emerging technologies in advanced biofuels, renewable chemicals, and biobased products that are ready for commercial deployment, address U.S.-based challenges, but cannot secure needed capital for "first-of-a-kind biorefinery construction" without support. Number of exhibitor contracts for IPC APEX EXPO® 2013 is nearing double-digit growth over same time last year. According to IPC Sales Director Mary Mac Kinnon, 111,300 ft² has been contracted to date. Event will take place February 19-21 at San Diego Convention Center, and IPC will begin space selection process on May 22. CLEO 2012 to address luminescent LED-type solar cells.

To produce maximum amount of energy, solar cells are designed to absorb as much light from the sun as possible. Now researchers from University of California, Berkeley, have suggested - and demonstrated - a counterintuitive concept: solar cells should be designed to be more like LEDs, able to emit light as well as absorb it. NREL Catalyst advances development of drop-in fuels.

Looking for ways to thermochemically treat biomass to achieve end product similar to oil, NREL researchers looked at gasification. This process takes biomass and heats it with steam and air to produce synthesis gas (syngas). During the syngas process, however, fouling tars and other undesired components are also created. NREL has patented a fluidizable tar reforming catalyst that converts tars into additional syngas to make thermochemically derived biomass syngas ready for fuel synthesis. Read More

Developed by Subcommittee G01.10 on Corrosion in Soils, ASTM WK35986, Test Method for Field Inspection of Transmission Poles and Lattice Towers, will detail multilevel approach for performing above- and below-ground inspection of transmission poles and lattice towers in the field. Once approved, ASTM WK35986 will be used by electrical utilities and subcontractors to accurately diagnose potential corrosion issues before they interrupt electrical service. Read More

According to April 2012 PMA Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies anticipate dip in business conditions during next 3 months. Report shows that 37% of participants expect economic activity to improve during next 3 months, down from 46% in March. Companies also anticipate downward trend in incoming orders, with 43% forecasting increase in orders, compared to 47% in March. Only 46% of participants report that shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago, down from 53% in March. Read More

Federal Agency Partnership to focus on unconventional natural gas/oil research.

U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and U.S. Department of the Interior announced formal partnership to coordinate and align all research associated with development of nation's unconventional natural gas and oil resources. Partnership exemplifies cross-government coordination required under President Obama's executive order, which created new Interagency Working Group to Support Safe and Responsible Development of Unconventional Domestic Natural Gas Resources.
