NAS to review IRIS assessment development process.

EPA announced that the National Academy of Sciences will conduct comprehensive review of agency's Integrated Risk Information System program's assessment development process, and changes that are currently being made or planned by EPA in response to NAS' April 2011 recommendations. IRIS program helps EPA protect Americans' health and the environment by conducting health assessments of over 550 chemicals that may be present in the environment. Read More

QEP Field Services agrees to pay $4 million for EPA violations.

U.S. EPA and Department of Justice announced settlement with QEP Field Services Co. to resolve alleged violations of Clean Air Act at 5 natural gas compressor stations on Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Utah. Under proposed settlement, QEPFS will pay $3.65 million civil penalty and $350,000 into Clean Air Trust Fund. Settlement also requires QEPFS to reduce emissions by removing certain equipment, installing additional pollution controls, and replacing natural gas powered instrument controls. Read More

Specifications address chromaticity of solid state lighting.

NEMA has published ANSI ANSLG C38.377 Specifications for the Chromaticity of Solid State Lighting Products. Publication specifies range of chromaticities recommended for general lighting with SSL products and advises customers of white light chromaticities. Information applies to chromaticity standards and definitions and specifications of color rendering index. It covers LED-based SSL products with control electronics and heat sinks with AC main power or DC voltage power. Read More

BIO Makes Statement on bill to extend Therapeutic Discovery Project tax credit.

Statement by BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood applauds Sen Robert Menendez (D-NJ) for introducing "The Extension of the Therapeutic Discovery Project Tax Credit" (S. 3232). According to Greenwood, this legislation "would support continued American innovation and accelerate the development of life-saving cures for numerous prominent diseases." Greenwood cited Therapeutic Discovery Project's (TDP) past success in advancing breakthrough medicines, economic stability, and job growth. Read More

BSA Distributor Survey shows solid gains.

According to BSA Annual Distributor Survey, aggregate sales volume increased 14.7% in 2011 over 2010 volume. Firms responding to survey represented 90% of the value of bearings sold through BSA members. Additional survey results revealed that in 2011, aggregate number of employees increased 3.5%, and in 2010, number of employees rose 1.8%. In another industry update, ABMA reported that Fredonia Group estimated world bearing market to be $50.5 billion in 2011 and $60 billion in 2011. Read More

BSA anounces 2012-2013 meeting dates.

BSA has announced important upcoming events beginning with 2012 Fall Meeting in Chicago scheduled for Sept 24-25 at the Hilton Suites Chicago/Magnificent Mile. Meeting is co-located with ABMA's Fall Meeting. Individual event schedules have been timed to avoid overlap, but there will be joint reception and dinner to facilitate industry networking. Looking ahead, BSA 2013 Winter Meeting is planned for January 27-29 and BSA's 2013 Annual Convention will be May 5-7. Read More

BIO Lauds Senate Passage of User Fee package.

BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood commended U.S. Senate's bipartisan approval of Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act (FDASIA), which includes reauthorization of Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA). Particular recognition was given to leadership shown by Chairman Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Ranking Member Mike Enzi (R-WY) for crafting measure that will "continue to ensure patient safety, access to the newest cures and therapies, and job growth in America." TRFA receives 12 entries for Polymer Research Award.

TRFA has received 12 entries for its Excellence in Polymer Research Award and expects more before final papers are due May 31. TRFA initiated this award presentation to student researchers to encourage and recognize advances in science and engineering of thermoset polymer industry. Award consists of $500 cash, a commemorative plaque, and an invitation to present the winning paper at TRFA annual meeting in October. The paper will also be posted on TRFA's website. Read More

ASTM D7492/D7492M, Guide for Use of Drainage System Media with Waterproofing Systems, provides information and guidelines for selection and installation of drainage systems media that are used with waterproofing systems. Drainage systems media promote drainage around foundations of buildings and on plazas. NAM supports House approval of Ex-Im reauthorization.

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement following House passage of H.R. 2072 to reauthorize Export-Import Bank. According to Timmons, the House put jobs first by passing legislation to reauthorize Ex-Im Band and increase its lending authority. Manufacturers thank House Majority Leader Cantor and Minority Whip Hoyer for their leadership on this bipartisan bill that gives thousands of small and medium-sized manufacturers ability to reach new markets and supports nearly 290,000 jobs. AEM offers French Canadian aerial safety manuals.

To help equipment manufacturers comply with government language requirements for distributing products in Quebec, AEM now offers French Canadian versions of it Aerial Platform Safety Manual and Aerial Devices Safety Manual. NAM urges President to approve Keystone XL pipeline.

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement after TransCanada formally reapplied for permit to build Keystone XL pipeline project. According to Timmons, in rejecting Keystone XL pipeline project earlier this year, President said no to a clear opportunity to create jobs and improve energy security in the U.S. Keystone project will deliver 20,000 manufacturing and construction jobs - with additional 118,000 indirect jobs - to an economy that badly needs them. Dr. Richard W. Neu honored for fatigue/fracture standards work.

Richard W. Neu, Ph.D., professor in Wodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA, received ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture. ASTM International member since 1992, Neu is respected expert in area of thermomechanical fatigue and fretting fatigue. His research interests focus on understanding and prediction of fatigue behavior of materials. Read More

Student Winners Announced in NREL's alternative energy car races.

NREL's Junior Solar Sprint, Hydrogen Fuel Cell, and Lithium Ion Battery car competitions saw 104 participating teams from 23 Colorado schools. Student teams raced solar, lithium ion, or hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles they designed and built themselves, and trophies were given out for speed as well as technology, craftsmanship, and innovation for each technology. As chairmen of Subcommittee D08.22 on Waterproofing and Dampproofing Systems, Bruce Darling noted that designers and contractors will be primary users of this new standard. IPC/JEDEC-9704A, Printed Circuit Assembly Strain Gage Test Guideline, makes it easier for engineers to run strain gage tests during manufacturing process. While first-generation document provided target pass/fail points, Revision A changes focus to methodology. Guideline includes formulas for calculating strain and describes techniques for analyzing data derived from these tests. ISPE and ILF engage with U.S. and Asian regulators at meetings.

ISPE continued its mission to provide neutral ground for pharmaceutical industry professionals and regulators to discuss industry issues at ISPE Affiliate meetings in Japan and China. Key topics of Japan Affiliate meeting included international harmonization and effects of globalization, particularly in regards to counterfeiting and drug shortages. NAM Comments on Administration's Fracking Regulations .

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement on proposed Bureau of Land Management hydraulic fracturing regulations on federal lands. According to Timmons, states are already effectively regulating hydraulic fracturing. New federal rules will be confusing and duplicative and will add unnecessary regulatory burden for energy producers.
