PACK EXPO Las Vegas is breaking records.

August 2, 2013

To meet supplier demand, PMMI is expanding the PACK EXPO Las Vegas show floor yet again. Scheduled for Sept 23–35, event will include more than 1,600 processing and packaging solutions providers occupying over 700,000 net square feet, making 2013 edition the largest PACK EXPO Las Vegas since event first opened in 1995. Attendance is expected to well exceed 26,000 manufacturing professionals from baking and snack, beverage, confectionery, pharmaceutical, and other industries. Read More

Call for Papers Issued for 2 TOPCONs in China in 2013.

SPE has issued calls for papers for 2 one-day topical conferences (TOPCONs), which will be held in Shanghai, China. While "Shaping the Future of Injection Molding through Game-Changing Innovation" will take place on December 11, "Global Advances in Plastics for Medical Devices and Packaging" will take place on December 12. Deadlines are as follows: author name, paper title, and 250-word abstract by September 15, 2013; full paper by October 15; and PowerPoint® presentation by December 1. Read More

ASTM Steel Committee presents award to Dr. William Warke.

ASTM International Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys presented the Founding Committee Award to William Warke, Ph.D., in recognition of his high level of leadership and exemplary contributions to the development of ASTM steel standards. A member of ASTM since 1966, Warke is an ASTM fellow and Award of Merit recipient. He served as A01 secretary for 6 years, is past chairman of the A01.91 Editorial Subcommittee, and currently serves on multiple subcommittees. Read More

ASTM Honors Hany Demian for standardization contributions.

Hany Demian, senior biomedical engineer at Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Office of Device Evaluation, at U.S. FDA in Silver Spring, MD received Patrick G. Laing Award for outstanding contributions in medical and surgical devices field. Member of ASTM International and Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices since 1995, Demian currently serves as F04 general interest vice chairman and secretary of Subcommittee F04.11 on Polymeric Materials. NEMA publishes revision of ANSI/NEMA HP 8-2013.

ANSI/NEMA HP 8 covers requirements for crosslinked, modified polyolefin insulated solid and stranded wire, designed to internal wiring of high reliability electrical/electronic equipment. Standard addresses 600 V and 1,000 V wire and permits continuous conductor temperature ratings of -40 to +90°C, 105°C, or 125°C with either tin- or silver-coated conductors. Major revisions include reference to ANSI/NEMA WC 67-2012 Standard for Uninsulated Conductors and removal of internal references. Read More

Washington approves revised interconnection procedures.

August 2, 2013

Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission issued final order approving significant revisions to state's interconnection rules. Revised rules mark 3 advances that were recommended or supported by IREC: (1) definition of "interconnection customer" now clarifies that net-metered systems can be owned by third-party; (2) multi-tiered approach to evaluating interconnection requests; and (3) eliminating requirement for external disconnect switch for Tier 1 systems. Refrigerant Blends may offer alternative to R-134a.

Research released by SAE provides further evidence that Mexichem Fluor's refrigerant blends AC5 and AC6 could offer EU regulation compliant alternatives to R-134a in automotive air conditioning. Conducted by Co-operative Research Programme, administered by SAE International, and sponsored by a number of major car manufacturers, research shows that AC6 has an even greater margin of safety than R-1234yf based on its reduced flammability characteristics.
