NEMA Publication covers gamma camera performance measurements.

NEMA NU 1-2012 Performance Measurements of Gamma Cameras establishes definitions, quantitative measurements of performance characteristics, and reporting techniques for specification of various gamma camera parameters. As published by NEMA, amendments pertain to intrinsic count rate performance in air, detector high count rate performance, and intrinsic energy resolution. NEMA has published NEMA TC 2-2013 Electrical Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Tubing and Conduit. Standard covers EPC-40, designed for normal-duty applications for above ground and concrete-encased applications or direct burial; and EPC-80, designed for heavy-duty (areas of physical damage) applications for above ground and concrete-encased applications or direct burial. BIO Convention in China to take place November 11-13, 2013.

BIO announced 3rd annual BIO® Convention in China, which will bring together executives from biotechnology, pharmaceutical companies, and investment firms from North America, Europe, and Asia to explore business opportunities in China. Preliminary program topics include science-focused sessions such as vaccines and research and development of orphan drugs to treat rare diseases, and business-focused sessions exploring China’s private health care industry and early-stage VC funding in China. BIO applauds renewable chemical legislation.

BIO thanked Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas), and other original co-sponsors for introducing the Qualifying Renewable Chemical Production Tax Credit Act of 2013, which provides renewable chemical producers access to production tax credits currently available for other renewable energy producers. Legislation will reduce taxes for U.S. producers of renewable chemicals, helping them to commercialize homegrown technology and build new biorefineries in the U.S. Read More

FAA awards $40 million to new Center of Excellence.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced that the FAA has selected a team of universities to lead new Air Transportation Center of Excellence. Led by Washington State University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, COE team will explore ways to meet environmental and energy goals that are part of Next Generation Air Transportation System. Areas of study will include new aircraft technologies and sustainable alternative aviation jet fuels. Read More

2013 Environmental Justice Small Grants were announced by EPA.

September 17, 2013

EPA announced $1.1 million in competitive grants to 39 non-profit and tribal organizations working to address environmental justice issues nationwide. According to EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, "These grants help build capacity, raise awareness, and equip communities with tools to address environmental challenges – from climate change impacts to brownfields and water pollution." Grants will benefit low-income, minority, and tribal communities overburdened by harmful pollution. Read More

EPRI Report documents testing of energy-saving devices.

Assessment of Retrofit Energy Savings Device (RESD) Technologies-Phase II describes and documents energy savings, energy efficiency, and limited power quality and performance assessment of 6 retrofit energy-saving devices that EPRI tested. Devices include lighting controls, electric motor controls, and one residential home energy saver. Devices were subjected to several tests to determine manufacturer’s claims and operation when exposed to real-world operating conditions.
