North American Robotics Industry posts best quarter ever.

According to statistics released by RIA, North American robotics companies sold more industrial robots in second quarter of 2012 than any previous quarter in history. Total of 5,556 robots valued at $403.1 million were sold to North American companies, a jump to 14% in units and 28% in dollars over same quarter in 2011. Orders in first half of 2012 totaled 10,652 robots valued at $747 million, increases of 20% in units and 29% in dollars over same period last year. Read More

IPC releases PCB industry results for June 2012.

According to North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 7.3% in June 2012 from June 2011, and bookings decreased 2.0% year over year. Compared to previous month, rigid PCB shipments were up 11.6%. Book-to-bill ratio remained above parity at 1.01. Flexible circuit shipments in June 2012 were up 2.1%, and bookings were down 8.4% compared to June 2011. Compared to previous month, flexible circuit shipments increased 29.7%. EPA Reviews Mercury and Air Toxics Standards for new plants.

Based on new information provided by industry stakeholders, U.S. EPA is reviewing technical information focused on pollution limits for new power plants under Mercury and Air Toxics Standards. EPA will specifically review monitoring issues related to mercury standards for new power plants as well as address other technical issues on acid gas and particle pollution standards for such plants. This reconsideration will not impact sensible, achievable, and cost-effective standards already set. Read More

Three NIST Staff Members are among those to be honored by ANSI.

There are 3 NIST staff members among 17 recipients of 2012 Leadership and Service Awards, presented by American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Patrick Gallagher will receive Chairman's Award; Gordon Gillerman will receive Gerald H. Ritterbusch Conformity Assessment Medal; and Elham Tabassi will receive Next Generation Award. NREL Helped Convert Alcatraz from diesel to electric power.

NREL helped National Park Service and DOE Federal Emergency Management Program transform Alcatraz Island's electricity source from diesel fuel to photovoltaic (PV) panels on rooftop of Cellhouse building. The former prison is now host to 1,300 solar panels, responsible for powering lights and appliances. PV array (307 kW) on main Cellhouse building roof is attached to two 2,000 amp-hour battery strings and inverter plant. It produces close to 400,000 kW-hr of electricity per year. Read More

EPA Scientists receive Presidential honor.

Two EPA scientists were named recipients of 2011 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Dr. Hazari was nominated for demonstrating how inhalation of low levels of air pollutants like particulate matter and ozone could increase susceptibility to cardiac events. Mr. Eisele developed and used automated air sampling instrumentation in project that was first to identify and characterize local sources of air pollution in high altitude areas. Read More

NIST's Guide rates software vulnerabilities from misuse.

NIST's Common Misuse Scoring System describes scoring system that computer security managers can use to assess severity of security risks arising from software features that, while beneficial to accomplishing task, are at least partially designed under assumption that users are operating these features as intended. Hal Miller Receives Award of Merit for standards contributions.

ASTM International Committee F02 on Flexible Barrier Packaging honored Hal Miller, president of PACE Solutions LLC in Cape May, NJ, with Award of Merit and title of fellow for contributions to global standards for flexible packaging industry. ASTM International Member since 1994, Miller served as chairman of Committee F02 from 2006-2011. He led reorganization effort for F02 as well as helped expand its international presence. ISO Technical Committee to hold meeting on HR in Australia.

July 27, 2012

ISO Technical Committee, working on international human resource (HR) standards, will hold its second plenary meeting on September 24-25 in Melbourne, Australia. With focus on adopting uniform standards in such areas as terminology, measurement, and governance, ISO TC 260 will explore worldwide HR practices. ANSI serves as Secretariat for ISO TC 260, and meeting will be hosted by Standards Australia (SA). As many as 50 representatives from array of countries are expected to attend. Read More

ASTM International Subcommittee E06.77 on High-Rise Building External Evacuation Devices seeks interested parties to join upcoming review of ASTM E2513, Specification for Multi-Story Building External Evacuation Platform Rescue Systems. Mechanical, electrical, and fire safety engineers as well as emergency responder personnel are encouraged to join E06.77 in its upcoming work on E2513, which is intended to be reapproved this year, and other standards developing activities. Business Conditions Deteriorate but improvement expected.

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions dropped to 38.6 in July from 52.4 in June. While this index has been sliding since its 2012 high of 72.5 in February, July's reading is first below 50 since August 2011. Survey's measure of degree of change in current North American conditions also declining, falling to -0.4 from neutral 0.0 in June. EBCI for future North American conditions, however, climbed to 61.4 from June's 57.1. Read More

European Commission released document detailing Frequently Asked Questions concerning EU's Restrictions on Hazardous Substances Directive 2001/65/EU. RoHS 2 is intended to simplify directive while providing legal clarity and improving enforceability of directive's restrictions on hazardous materials. ELFA's MILFI-25 for June 2012 shows new business growth.

Reporting economic activity for $628 billion equipment finance sector in June 2012, ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business at $8 billion. This is up 9.5% from same period in 2011, 29% from previous month, and 14.5% year-to-date. Receivables over 30 days were down from May and same period in 2011, while charge-offs were up from May and down compared to 2011. Credit approvals increased to 78.7% from 78.3% in May. Read More

White House announced 3 researchers at NIST will receive 2011 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). Jayne Billmayer Morrow is being honored for pioneering research on properties of microbial systems; Ian Coddington will be recognized for developing rapid, low-cost, spectroscopic measurement tools; and Frank W. Anne Goldman, VP of consumer research at ACCE International in Mississauga, Ontario, has received David R. Peryam Award from ASTM International Committee E18 on Sensory Evaluation of Materials and Products. Award recognizes outstanding professionals in the applied sensory science field. NIST Study of Hazard to Firefighters leads to safety alert.

Results of "live burn" studies and laboratory tests conducted by NIST fire researchers helped to prompt safety alert warning of heat-caused damage to facepiece lenses on firefighter self-contained breathing apparatus, a factor implicated in several first-responder fatalities and injuries. Issued by NFPA, alert notes that fires in modern buildings and houses burn hotter and faster than those in older structures, resulting in temperatures high enough to cause lens damage. Read More
