Council's website at www.AEC.org includes information from previous site, with significant enhancements related to applications, sustainability, and fabrication. NEMA Commends Senate on energy-efficiency tax legislation.

NEMA commends introduction of Expanding Industrial Energy and Water Efficiency Incentives Act of 2012 by Senators Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), and Diane Feinstein (D-CA). Legislation includes measures that help business make long term energy and financial saving investments, such as tax credit of $120/horsepower for advanced motor systems. Nanostructures Modeled After Moth Eyes may enhance X-rays.

Using compound eyes of the moth as their inspiration, international team of physicists has developed nanoscale materials that could reduce radiation received by patients getting X-rayed, while improving resolution of resulting images. Work is led by Yasha Yi-a, professor of the City University of New York, who is also affiliated with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New York University, and was published in Optical Society's journal, Optics Letters. NREL Staff donates more than 1,000 lb of food for the needy.

July 16, 2012

During recent drive, employees at NREL donated enough food to feed 50 adults and 100 children for a week. Food was donated to the Action Center in Lakewood, which has as its mission "to provide an immediate response to basic human needs and promote pathways to self-sufficiency for Jefferson County residents and the homeless." When food was brought to Action Center and placed on the scale, it totaled 1,198 pounds. Read More

EPA GHG Permitting Requirements maintain focus on large emitters.

July 16, 2012

U.S. EPA will not revise greenhouse gas (GHG) permitting thresholds under Clean Air Act (CAA). Final rule - part of EPA's common-sense, phased-in approach to GHG permitting under CAA, announced in 2010 and upheld by U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. Circuit - maintains focus on nation's largest emitters that account for nearly 70% of total GHG pollution from stationary sources. EPA is also finalizing provision that lets companies set plant-wide emissions limits for GHGs. Read More

NREL Researcher selected for DOE Early Career Research Program.

Kirstin Alberi, researcher at U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) NREL, has been selected by DOE's Office of Basic Energy Sciences as one of 68 scientists to participate in DOE's Early Career Research Program. Based on her work on "Light-Stimulated Epitaxy of Novel Semiconductor Alloys and Heterostructures," Alberi is eligible to receive up to $2.5 million in research grants over 5 years. Her project explores use of energy from light to aid semiconductor film growth. Read More

Biofuel Trade Organizations petition to intervene in AFPM v. EPA.

Six biofuel industry organizations jointly petitioned U.S. Court of Appeals for District of Columbia to intervene in lawsuit filed by American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers and Western States Petroleum Association against U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Organizations are asking to join AFPM et al. v. EPA suit to support EPA's denial of waiver of 2011 Cellulosic Renewable Volume Obligation under the Renewable Fuel Standard. Read More

NTSB makes recommendations to FAA on amateur-built aircraft.

July 16, 2012

NTSB recommendations A-12-28 through -39 for FAA include changes to fuel system and flight test procedures for powered experimental, operating amateur-built aircraft. Also requested is means to document aircraft's performance data and operating envelope. Board also recommends changes to Amateur-Built Aircraft and Ultralight Flight Testing Handbook, guidance for issuance of Letter of Deviation Authority, and revision of Civil Aircraft Registry database. On July 10, 2012, NIST published Advanced Metering Infrastructure Smart Meter Upgradeability Test Framework (NISTIR 7823) to help utility companies test their procedures for upgrading meters securely from remote location. This draft publication offers generic set of testing criteria to help any utility determine whether its method of upgrading meters conforms with security and functionality requirements in NEMA Standard for Smart Grid Upgradeability. NTSB issues safety monitoring recommendations to FMCSA.

July 16, 2012

Safety recommendations H-12-13 through -19, issued by NTSB to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), include guidance for motor carriers on using onboard monitoring systems, and determining they reduce accidents or injuries. Board also suggests states retain records from Commercial Driver's License Information System for 10 yr. In addition, it suggests rating scores to determine carrier's fitness and process for identifying causes of safety risks found during compliance reviews. Read More

NIST Seeks Comment on federal ID credential security standard.

July 16, 2012

NIST released second-round draft version of updated security standard for identity credentials in Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards used by federal employees and contractors. Comments are sought by August 10, 2012 from public on this document, Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 201, which will be last draft before final version is published. Requirements include that all PIV cards contain IC chip for storing electronic information, PIN, and protected biometric data. Read More

HID Lamp Shipment Indexes show growth for first quarter.

July 16, 2012

NEMA's HID lamp shipment indexes returned to positive growth territory during first quarter of 2012, with each type showing year-over-year gains. Sodium vapor lamps increased 2.9%, while shipments of mercury vapor and metal halide lamps increased 5.0% and 0.1%, respectively. Market shares for sodium and mercury vapor lamps increased by 0.5 and 0.1 percentage points to 32.8 and 4.6%, respectively. Metal halide lamps posted share of 62.5%, a decline of 0.7 percentage points on year-over-year basis. Read More

Pension Fix benefits both manufacturers and workers.

In her statement following announcement of highway transportation conference agreement (H.R. 4348), NAM Vice President for Tax and Domestic Economic Policy Dorothy Coleman said that flaws in pension funding formula need to be corrected in order to provide predictable financial obligation for employers year to year.
