PTDA Announces Upcoming Events for 2013, 2014, and 2015.

PTDA announced dates and locations for its 2013 events. These include University of Industrial Distribution (March 10–13) in Indianapolis, IN; Spring Leaders Conference/Leadership Development Conference (March 21–23) in San Antonio, TX; Hannover Fair (April 8–12) in Hannover, Germany; PTDA Canadian Conference (June 6–8) in Toronto, Ontario; EPTDA Convention (Sept 18–20) in Venice, Italy; and PTDA Industry Summit (Oct 3–5) in Palm Desert, CA. Session 1 Agenda announced for cleaning and coating conference.

IPC and SMTA have jointly announced the agenda for Session 1 of the High-Reliability Cleaning and Coating Conference, which will take place November 13–15, 2012 in Chicago, IL. Focused on electronics assembly reliability as well as influence of cleaning and coating upon producing reliable hardware, conference will feature first session, chaired by Dr. Craig Hillman of DfR, that introduces super-hydrophobic coatings that protect circuits from damaging effects of moisture/water intrusion. SmartWay Honors Freight Companies for supply chain efficiency.

For achievements in efficiently moving freight while reducing CO2 and other harmful emissions, EPA honored 40 freight industry companies with 2012 SmartWay Excellence Awards. Gina McCarthy, Assistant Administrator, Office of Air and Radiation said companies participating in SmartWay Transport Partnership are moving USA forward "to a healthier and more secure future." ASTM Initiative to address environmental impact of products.

ASTM International announces new initiative as Program Operator for Product Category Rules (PCRs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which will provide venue for developing PCRs and verifying EPDs. According to ASTM's Timothy Brooke, the program will offer "scientifically based, quantifiable information about product parameters such as resource consumption and ozone depletion" in hopes of helping businesses and consumers understand product's environmental impact. Green Button Tool helps consumers save electricity.

Thanks to NREL and White House, 31 million American homes will be getting computer-friendly data about their electricity use from their utility companies. Green Button, based on exacting standards, helps consumers make informed purchase decisions and adjust electricity use to save both energy and money. Once logged into utility's website, customers can click Green Button icon to download their personal energy use data in common format defined by Energy Service Provider Interface standard. Read More

Green Laser Pointer identifies dangerous chemical traces.

At Laser Science XXVIII, collocated with OSA's Annual Meeting – Frontier in Optics (FiO), an Israeli research team will present findings concerning development of portable Raman spectrometer capable of detecting minute traces of hazardous chemicals in real-time.  Able to first scan entire sample optically to locate individual particles of interest, spectrometer in question uses low-power, commercial green laser pointer that helps improve detection of inherently weak Raman signal. Manufacturing Institute Coalition to train military veterans.

The Manufacturing Institute joined GE, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Alcoa, and other business, digital, academic, and not-for-profit partners to launch Get Skills to Work coalition, which aims to train military veterans for jobs in advanced manufacturing and to enhance American competitiveness. Initial investments will help 15,000 veterans translate military experience to corresponding advanced manufacturing opportunities and gain technical skills needed to qualify for careers in this growing sector. World EMS Market Study shows recovery, forecasts growth in 2012.

Released by IPC, 2011–2012 Analysis and Forecast for the EMS Industry shows that, following economic setbacks in 2009, world market for electronics manufacturing services (EMS) continued to recover in 2011 and 2012 and is projected to grow this year 9.4% globally and 8.9% in North America. PMMI Exposition Director brings perspective to PACK EXPO.

In August, AJ Janosko joined PMMI, owner and producer of the PACK EXPO trade shows, as director of expositions and as such is responsible for handling day-to-day show management. CSPA announced availability of Second Edition, First Update of CSPA Consumer Product Ingredient Dictionary. This updated and expanded Second Edition features 40 new ingredient monographs, 126 new trade names, 90 other technical names defined, and new standardized system for identifying hydrocarbon mixtures. BIO Strongly Opposes RFS waiver requests in comments to EPA.

In comments made to EPA on requests by governors of several states for waiver of America's Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), BIO said that any waiver of RFS would have little to no effect on corn prices and would harm USA biofuel producers and biotech companies. "Stability and growth of biofuels industry," said BIO, "depends on continued and predictable implementation of the RFS to meet the policy's overall goals of expanded production and use of renewable fuels in the transportation sector."
