Welding and Gases Today highlights recent growth at nexAir.

Featured in Summer 2012 issue of Welding and Gases Today, nexAir is one of the largest independent gases and welding equipment distributors in the nation. In 2010, company added hydrogen filling facility in Memphis with 9,000 gal storage tank and monthly fill volume of 1.5 million ft³. In 2011, propane filling plant increased nexAir's propane cylinder fill capacity with installation of 30,000 gal tank with 4 automated fill scales. RI Law Requires Children's Jewelry to conform to ASTM standard.

Rhode Island now requires children's jewelry manufactured after December 18, 2012 to conform to requirements of ASTM standard F2923-11. According to Comprehensive Children's Jewelry Safety Act, "children's jewelry means jewelry designed or intended primarily for use by children 12 years old or younger, to be worn as an item of personal ornamentation." Approved in 2011, ASTM F2923 establishes requirements and test methods for specified elements and mechanical hazards in children's jewelry. Read More

NASA Partner SpaceX completes Dragon design review.

NASA partner Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) has completed design review of crewed version of its Dragon spacecraft. Concept baseline review presented NASA with primary and secondary design elements of Dragon capsule, intended to carry astronauts into low Earth orbit. Conducted at company headquarters, June 14 review provided details on launch pads modification, docking capabilities, weight, power requirements, living arrangements, and prospective ground landing sites/techniques. Space Exploration Technologies has completed design review of the crewed version of its Dragon spacecraft designed to carry astronauts into low Earth orbit. Obama Administration Report addresses Everglades restoration.

Obama Administration released report outlining historic Federal investments and progress made in Everglades restoration under leadership of President Obama, and announced $80 million in additional funding to support farmers and ranchers who voluntarily conserve wetlands on agricultural land in Northern Everglades Watershed. Administration has invested $1.5 billion in Everglades projects and initiatives, including nearly $900 million for projects that will restore water flow and essential habitat. Read More

ASTM Airborne Silica Symposium to address workplace sampling.

Second ASTM International D22 Symposium on Silica and Associated Respirable Mineral Particles will held October 25-26, 2012, in Atlanta, GA. It will provide update on progress towards assessing airborne respirable crystalline silica (RCS) exposure for compliance with current limit values. NEMA Calls for Progressive Action concerning Smart Grid support.

"Integrating currently available smart products into the grid," according to NEMA president and CEO Evan R. Gaddis," can help accelerate problem identificaton, diversionary routing, and resolution when it comes to power outages. Gaddis called for "Practical and progressive action" to broaden use of Smart Grid products, namely tax and regulatory policies geared toward advancing grid investments. Pilot Accreditation Program includes 4 certification entities.

ANSI and IREC announced that CalCERTS, CleanTech Education, Building Science Institute, and Midwest Renewable Energy Association are participating in accreditation program for energy efficiency and renewable energy. Accreditations will be announced by end of August, while program may be reopened for general applications in late 2012. Companies' programs are being evaluated against IREC Standard 14732: 2012, General Requirements for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Certificate Programs. Read More

Papers Invited for biodiesel fuels stability symposium.

Papers are invited for ASTM International symposium on Thermal and Oxidative Stability of Biodiesel Fuels. Topics include potential fuel quality and stability issues in storage, use of biodiesel blended fuels after refinery and pipeline distribution, appropriate test methods for defining instability, potential impact of fuel additives on instability, and evidence of fuel instability and associated problems. NREL joins Global Alliance of Solar Research Institutes.

During opening session of Intersolar North America, NREL Director Dan Arvizu signed Memorandum of Understanding with Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems and Japan's Research Center for Photovoltaic Technologies, a research unit of National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. IPC and JPCA Printed Electronics Standard defines material categories.

IPC and JPCA have released IPC/JPCA-4921, Requirements for Printed Electronics Base Materials (Substrates), which defines terms and establishes basic requirements for categories of ceramic, organic, metal, glass, and other. Standard provides common language for designers, equipment makers, and manufacturers, according to Marc Carter, of IPC. It also provides starting point for IPC's Printed Electronics Initiative to establish infrastructure that will help contribute to industry expansion. Read More

NEMA Publishes Standard for aerospace/industrial electric cable.

NEMA has published ANSI/NEMA WC 27500 Standard for Aerospace and Industrial Electrical Cable. In this edition, requirements are included for finished aerospace and industrial electrical cables intended for signal and low-voltage power applications with defined environment or temperature conditions found in commercial aircraft, military aircraft, and high performance vehicles. Published by NEMA, ANSI C136.27 American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment-Tunnel and Underpass Lighting Luminaires addresses requirements or luminaires used to illuminate roadway tunnels and underpasses. Requirements in this standard are specifically limited to general attributes of tunnel luminaires. Based on state of industry, updates to referenced documents, terminal block, terms, and definitions have been made in this 2012 edition. Read More

NTSB makes safety recommendations to EAA.

According to NTSB, Experimental Aircraft Association should identify and apply incentives to encourage owners, builders, and pilots of experimental amateur-built aircraft to complete flight test training. EAA should also work with membership, aircraft kit manufacturers, and avionics manufacturers to develop standards for recording of data in electronic flight displays, engine instruments, or other recording devices to be used in support of flight tests.
