Alliance to Continue Management of DOE's NREL.

October 9, 2012

In its letter to Alliance for Sustainable Energy, LLC, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) provided preliminary notice that it will exercise option to extend Alliance's contract to manage and operate NREL beyond current 5-year contract period. DOE did not specify extension period in its notice to Alliance. Dr. Dan Arvizu, Alliance president and director of NREL, said "This announcement is a positive indication of the value Alliance brings to DOE in the management of NREL." Read More

Global PCB Industry grew 2.4% in 2011.

October 9, 2012

According to World PCB Production Report released by IPC, approximately 2,600 fabricators produced an estimated value of $59.138 billion in PCBs in 2011. Printed circuit board production value declined 11.3% in the Americas, but grew 1.3% in Europe and 3.6% in Asia, which now accounts for 89% of world PCB production. Fastest-growing product categories in 2011 were metal core PCBs, high-performance rigid PCBs, and IC substrates. Rigid flex and CEM-3 production declined in 2011. PMMI has announced that award-winning broadcast journalist Bob Sirott will moderate PACK EXPO Lecture Series featuring Dennis Miller and James Carville on Oct 28. Currently a co-anchor for FOX Chicago News at 9, Sirott has been part of the Chicago broadcasting landscape since his time as an NBC Chicago Page in 1966. Through the 1970s, Sirott worked his way up in radio and make the jump to television in 1980, becoming WBBM-TV’s (CBS) first lifestyle and entertainment editor. Read More

NJ Glass Manufacturer agrees to install emissions controls.

October 8, 2012

U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Justice announced that Durand Glass Manufacturing Company Inc. in Millville, NJ has agreed to install emissions controls on its 3 glass furnaces that will reduce more than 173 tons of nitrogen oxides and 23 tons of particulate matter per year. Durand also installed monitoring systems that will allow it to continuously measure its NOx emissions, and agreed to pay $300,000 civil penalty to resolve violations of the Clean Air Act. Read More

NAM announced that 248 members of the House of Representatives and 48 senators received NAM Award for Manufacturing Legislative Excellence, which is a record year for the number of members who voted in support of pro-manufacturing policies. Awards are based on members of Congress’s votes on key manufacturing legislation identified by NAM in the 112th Congress. NREL Study shows fuel economy benefits of hybrid delivery vans.

October 5, 2012

"Eighteen-Month Final Evaluation of UPS Second Generation Diesel Hybrid Electric Delivery Vans" details impact of hybridization on fuel economy and performance, and identifies conditions under which hybrids offer maximum fuel savings. NREL team collected and analyzed in-service fuel economy, maintenance, and other vehicle performance data on 11 hybrid and 11 conventional step vans. During on-road portion of study, hybrid vans demonstrated 13–20% higher fuel economy than conventional vans. Read More

Construction Spending declines for second month in a row.

October 5, 2012

According to U.S. Census Bureau, construction spending has fallen for second consecutive month, dipping 0.6% in August. However, spending is up 6.5% from one year ago. Nonresidential construction spending fell 1.3% to seasonally adjusted annual rate of $557.2 billion. Year-over-year, nonresidential construction spending is up 2.2%. In addition, residential construction spending increased 0.9% for the month and is 16.1% higher than August 2011. Read More

NEMA Publishes Standard regarding CT access controls.

NEMA has published NEMA XR 26 Access Controls for Computer Tomography: Identification, Interlocks, and Logs. It applies to particular functioning of computer tomography (CT) system, as covered by scope of IEC 60601-2-44, and relates to who has access/permission to use system for clinical or other uses.
