AASHTO President testifies on status of MAP-21 implementation.

AASHTO President Mike Lewis, Director of the RI DOT, testified before Highways and Transit Subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, urging Congress to allow implementation of "transformative policy and program reforms" included in MAP-21 to take place before contemplating major changes. Reforms are designed to accelerate project delivery, improve efficiency through performance measurement and transparency, and systematically address freight transportation needs. International Standards Projects reflect continued growth.

According to ASABE's Scott Cedarquist work on international standards for solid biofuels continues to expand, spurred on by needs of expanding industry. Technical Committee 238 (TC238), organized in 2007 by ISO to develop standards for solid biofuels, saw increased international participation at recent meeting, at which existing regional QA protocols were deemed adequate and group discussed new projects for thermally treated solid biofuels and safe handling of pelletized biofuels. NREL Names New Executives to lead select research centers.

NREL made 3 key hires to lead research centers: 9-year NREL veteran Tom Foust as National Bioenergy Center Director, David Post as Center Director for Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF), and Rich Greene as Biosciences Center Director. While Post comes to NREL with almost 40 years of experience in nuclear and chemical facilities engineering, design, construction, startup, operation, and maintenance, Greene joins NREL after 30 years of service to federal government. Examples include IEC 62047-5 Ed. 1.0 b:2011, Semiconductor devices - Micro-electromechanical devices - Part 5: RF MEMS switches, and IEC 60118-13 Ed. 3.0 b:2011, Electroacoustics - Hearing aids - Part 13: Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). BIO announced election of GlycoMimetics President and CEO Rachel King as Board of Directors Chair for 2013–2014 term and Allergan Chairman, President, and CEO David Pyott as Board Secretary. Also, BIO announced re-election of Fenway Pharmaceuticals Chairman and CEO Mark Skaletsky as Board Treasurer as well as election of 19 Directors to serve on BIO's Board Executive Committee. Furthermore, BIO welcomed election of 8 new members to its Board of Directors. BIO announces dates for 2013 BIO Convention in China.

BIO and China Center for Pharmaceutical International Exchange announced that the 2013 BIO Convention in China will be held Nov 11–13. Leaders from global biopharma industry will gather to develop strategic collaborations, establish distribution networks, find service providers, and create cross-border alliances with companies from U.S., Europe, and Asia. Rocket Contest Students return for White House Science Fair.

Students participating in Team America Rocketry Challenge displayed their rockets for President Obama at the White House Science Fair for third time since 2010. Students from Memphis, TN and San Antonio, TX represented more than 55,000 students pursuing STEM education who have taken part in world’s largest rocket competition over past 11 years. NEMA Praises Bill promoting energy storage technologies.

NEMA endorsed HR 1465, STORAGE 2013, which promotes adoption of state-of-the-art energy storage technologies, calling this legislation "carefully crafted" in its regard for entire range of energy storage technologies. "Energy storage is a key enabler of the Smart Grid and is transforming the way we think about electricity," said NEMA President and CEO Evan R. ASTM Committee honors Chao Lin with Haas Award.

April 25, 2013

Chao H. Lin, a naval architect at the U.S. Maritime Administration, has received John Haas Memorial Award from ASTM International Committee F25 on Ships and Marine Technology. Lin was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the committee, and particularly to Subcommittee F25.01 on Structures, where he has served as chairman since 2009. A member of ASTM since 2008, Lin has contributed to development of F25 standards that ensure vessel integrity and cost-effective ship production. Read More

ELFA releases Monthly Leasing and Finance Index for March.

According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, overall new business volume for March was $6.8 billion, flat compared to volume in March 2012. Month-over-month, new business volume was up 45% from February, and year to date, cumulative new business volume was up 3% compared to 2012. Receivables over 30 days were unchanged in March from previous month at 2.0%, and were down from 2.8% in same period in 2012. In addition, credit approvals totaled 78.4% in March, up 1% from February. Read More

Under auspices of U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission, U.S. Department of Commerce is organizing U.S.–Russia Standards and Conformity Assessment Forum that will take place in Moscow on May 30, 2013.
