Temporary Fuel Waiver supports 8 states impacted by hurricane.

September 7, 2012

As requested by Governors, EPA exercised its authority under Clean Air Act to temporarily waive certain federal clean gasoline requirements for gasoline sold and distributed in LA, MI, AL, GA, FL, TN, SC, and NC due to disruption in supply of fuel from Gulf-area refineries following Hurricane Isaac. Waiver granted by EPA in coordination with Department of Energy (DOE) will help ensure adequate supply of gasoline in impacted states until normal supply can be restored. Read More

NREL Summer Interns acquire lab experience.

For 10 weeks every summer, college students from across the country migrate to Golden, Colorado, to work side-by-side with top researchers at NREL, the only national laboratory solely focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. This summer, there were 4 different programs and 59 interns, including, for the first time, community college students. The largest program was the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship. NREL Selects HP, Intel as Partners for HPC data center project.

NREL selected HP and Intel to provide HPC system dedicated to energy systems integration, renewable energy research, and energy efficiency technologies. Set to reside at Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) under construction on Golden, CO campus, $10 million HPC system will expand modeling and simulation capabilities for advancing materials research and developing deeper understanding of biological and chemical processes as well as research into integrated energy systems. U.S. EPA has opened registration for student teams from colleges and universities across the country to participate in Campus RainWorks Challenge, through which teams will compete to develop innovative approaches to stormwater management. NEMA taps Paul Molitor for SGIP transition team.

NEMA announced that it will dedicate Paul Molitor as Interim Executive Director of newly reorganized Smart Grid Interoperability Panel. In this role, Mr. Molitor will lead transition effort from SGIP government-run organization, to SGIP 2.0 that is industry led. Molitor is Assistant VP of Strategic Initiatives for NEMA and former Plenary Secretary of SGIP, which was established under Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 to coordinate interoperability of Smart Grid devices and systems. Safety Recommendation will prevent taxiing airplane collisions.

September 6, 2012

NTSB recommended that FAA require large airplanes to be equipped with anti-ground collision aid, such as on-board external-mounted camera system, to provide pilots with clear view of plane's wingtips while taxiing. This would ensure clearance from other aircraft, vehicles, and obstacles while eliminating need for pilot to extend his or her head out of open cockpit window to see airplane's wingtips. Hand Soldering Competition winners announced.

Brian Wade, senior technician at CAMtek (Bloomington, IL) took first place in second annual hand soldering competition at IPC Midwest Conference and Exhibition. Second place went to Alyssia Demetropoulos of Pro-Active Engineering (Sun Prairie, WI) and third-place went to Sue Fischer of Plexus (Appleton, WI). Points were awarded based on soldering in accordance with IPC-A-610E Class 3 criteria, speed at which assembly was produced, and overall functionality of assembly. Read More

IPC releases PCB industry results for July 2012.

According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 4.2% in July 2012 from July 2011, and bookings decreased 5.7% year over year. Book-to-bill ratio registered 1.00, exactly at parity. Flexible circuit shipments in July 2012 were up 15.4%, while bookings were down 35.0% compared to July 2011, and book-to-bill ratio dipped to 1.03. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, shipments in July 2012 decreased 2.6% and orders booked decreased 8.4% from July 2011. Read More

Most Swing State Voters want action on sequestration.

According to Harris Interactive online poll released on behalf of Aerospace Industries Association, 80% of likely voters in Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Missouri want leaders in Washington DC to find alternative to sequestration budget cuts before November elections take place. Poll found that concern over sequestration cuts across age, party, race, and regional lines. In addition, 77% of likely voters said they were aware of this issue prior to taking poll. Read More
