Single Process Available for accreditation to multiple standards.

ANSI announced that ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board/ACLASS has begun offering opportunity for environmental laboratories to undergo concurrent accreditation to multiple relevant standards. Under new process, laboratories may be accredited concurrently to NELAC Institute (TNI) Volume 1: Management and Technical Requirements for Laboratories Performing Environmental Analysis as well as several standards and programs: ISO/IEC 17025, U.S. DoD ELAP, U.S. EPA NLLAP, and TNI NEFAP. ASTM Committee sponsors seminar on temporal methods.

Sponsored by ASTM Committee E18 on Sensory Evaluation, seminar on Temporal Methods will be held April 17, 2013. Overview will present problem: understand if/how eating experience of snack bar has been changed by reducing sugar in formula. Three methods will be applied: progressive profiling, Temporal Dominance of Sensations; and Temporal Order of Sensations. Drywall Safety Act cites ASTM Standard C1264-11.

Signed into law by President Barack Obama on January 14, 2013, Drywall Safety Act of 2012 (PL 112-266) cites ASTM International standard C1264-11, Specification for Sampling, Inspection, Rejection, Certification, Packaging, Marking, Shipping, Handling and Storage of Gypsum Panel Products. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) chairman Inez Tenenbaum claimed noted collaboration with ASTM and anticipated future work with ASTM to ensure speedy adoption of drywall content standard. HI Publishes Rotodynamic Pumps Guideline regarding NPSH Margin.

Hydraulic Institute (HI) has published ANSI/HI 9.6.1–2012 Rotodynamic Pumps Guideline for NPSH Margin, which serves as replacement for 1998 edition. Covering rotodynamic, general-purpose pumps with power levels as high as 5,300 hp and impeller tip speeds less than 130 fps, guideline describes benefits to pump longevity of maintaining suitable NPSH Margin. Document serves as tutorial on NPSH while also providing guidance for determining NPSH Margin. NAM Announces New Coalition to boost STEM education system.

NAM announced formation of inSPIRE STEM USA (Supporting Productive Immigration Reform and Education), which aims to address high-skilled jobs crisis and improve U.S. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education system. Members of this coalition, comprised of businesses, education groups, and other national associations, support 2-pronged solution: improvements in U.S. STEM pipeline and reforms that increase H1B visas and green cards. According to statement by Ross Eisenberg, NAM Vice President of Energy and Resources Policy, Governor Heineman's decision to approve new route is another positive step toward clearing the way for fina approval of Keystone XL pipeline by President Obama. ANSI and IREC launch accreditation program.

ANSI-IREC program for accreditation of renewable energy and energy efficiency certificate programs has completed its pilot phase, which began in January 2012, and is now accepting general applications. Program evaluates certificate-awarding schools, colleges, and other institutions against requirements for equipment, curriculum, facilities, administration, and personnel set forth in IREC Standard 14732: 2013, General Requirements for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Certificate Programs. Detroit Students to compete at 2013 FIRST Robotics Competition.

January 24, 2013

SME Education Foundation is providing $50,000 grant to the Michigan Engineering Zone, the U-M, College of Engineering, high school student support facility. Funding will help nearly 175 students, comprising 40 teams, from 12 Detroit Public Schools, and surrounding community, compete in 2013 FIRST® Robotics Competition. Once these young inventors create a robot, their teams will participate in competitions that measure effectiveness of each robot, power of collaboration, and their determination. Read More

January 2013 MCI-EFI shows increase in industry confidence.

January 2013 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry (MCI-EFI) reports confidence in equipment finance market at 54.2, up from December's 48.5. Regarding business conditions over next 4 months, 6.1% of respondents expected improvement (up from 5.9% in December); 87.9% said conditions will remain same (up from 73.5% in December); and 6.1% believe business will worsen (down from 20.6% from December). Also, 87.9% evaluates current U.S. economy as fair, up from 76.5%. Read More

Career Certifications bolster networking, security workforce.

ANSI announced accreditation of several Cisco Career Certifications under Accreditation Program for Personnel Certification Bodies. Accreditation was granted to Cisco for following certifications: Cisco CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) for Routing and Switching, Cisco CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional) for Routing and Switching, CCNA Security, and CCNP Security. NREL teams up on three ARPA-E projects.

NREL has joined DOE and research partners in launching Advanced Management and Protection of Energy Storage Devices program. Over next 3 years, NREL engineers will work with Utah State University, Washington University, and Eaton Corporation to optimize utilization, life, and cost of Li-ion batteries for electric-drive vehicles through improved battery management and controls.
