ASTM WK35463, Specification for Thin-Gauge Fully Processed Non-Oriented Electrical Steel, will govern class of very thin silicon-iron electrical steel not previously covered by any ASTM standard. Specifically, proposed standard will standardize existing material designations currently based on commercial trade names as well as give users and their customers confidence in new designs/innovations by offering standard material designation for consistent material properties. ANSI/NEMA HP 4-2012 covers specific requirements for fluorinated ethylene propylene insulated solid and stranded wire, designed for internal wiring of high reliability electrical and electronic equipment. Publication addresses 250 V (type KT), 600 V (type K), and 1,000 V (type KK) hook-up wire and permits continuous conductor temperature ratings of -65 to +200°C with silver-coated or nickel-coated conductors and -65 to +150°C with tin-coated conductors. Construction Industry loses 20,000 jobs in November.

December 13, 2012

According to employment report by U.S. Department of Labor, national construction industry unemployment rate was 12.2% in November, up from 11.4% the previous month. Nonresidential building construction sector lost 4,300 jobs, while residential building construction sector lost 6,800 jobs, and nonresidential specialty trade contractors lost 7,400 jobs. In contrast, residential specialty trade contractors added 3,200 jobs in November and have added 20,700 jobs compared to same time last year. Read More

ANSI EESCC seeks participants.

Portland, Oregon Flights to be cleaner and greener.

According to FAA, pilots will start using NextGen technology and procedures that will enable aircraft to fly more efficient, environmentally friendly flights into Portland International Airport beginning next year. NextGen program uses RNAV approach procedures, which enable aircraft to fly safely on any desired flight path within coverage of ground- or space-based navigation aids. NTSB recommends ignition interlocks for DWI offenders.

December 13, 2012

In its study on wrong-way driving crashes, NTSB cited alcohol-impaired driving as the leading cause of these collisions and recommended that all first-offender alcohol-impaired drivers be required to have ignition interlocks installed on their vehicles. NTSB also endorsed continued development of a passive alcohol-detection technology, which would prevent alcohol-impaired individuals from operating vehicles by detecting alcohol in driver’s system through breath- and touch-based sensors. ASTM approves specification for constant air inflatable devices.

ASTM International Committee F15 on Consumer Products has approved ASTM F2729, Consumer Safety Specification for Constant Air Inflatable Play Devices for Home Use, which covers devices intended for use by children ages 2-12. In addition to detailed general requirements, standard covers areas such as calibration, marking/labeling, and instructional literature. It also suggests that products include a label identifying conformance to ASTM F2729. Cooperation on eMobility standardization was the focus of discussion during Transatlantic Roundtable organized by European Committee for Standardization, European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization, and ANSI, which took place in Brussels on November 28-29. Study indicates equipment finance sector emerged from Great Recession with finance volumes at all-time high, resulting from equipment investment growth and interest rate environment. ANSI and its Procedures and Standards Administration department wish to remind all ANSI-Accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group administrators to ISO that Procedural Compliance Form issued via email and 2012 TAG Annual Reports must be submitted no later than January 31, 2013, to ANSI PSA department. NEMA published ANSI/NEMA WC 67-2012 Standard for Uninsulated Conductors Used in Electrical and Electronic Applications, which covers variety of conductor types, including single end and stranded, coated/uncoated copper, coated copper alloy, coated copper-clad steel, aluminum, and thermocouple extension conductors.
