ASTM Road and Paving Committee honors Stuart Schwotzer.

Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials presented ASTM International Prevost Hubbard Award to Stuart Schwotzer, senior geologist in Construction Services Division at Bowser-Morner Laboratories in Dayton, OH, for his contributions to development of standards for road and paving materials. ASTM International member since 1978, Schwotzer specializes in testing and evaluation of aggregates used in construction. He has also held various roles at Ohio DoT in Columbus. Read More

L. David Suits receives ASTM International Johnson Award.

L. David Suits, executive director of the North American Geosynthetic Society, Albany, NY, has received A. Ivan Johnson Outstanding Achievement Award from ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock. Award is presented to member whose efforts have produced particular outstanding result or significant contribution to work of committee. A dedicated ASTM member for more than 35 years, Suits works on several subcommittees within Committees D18 and D35 on Geosynthetics. Read More

Christopher McCowan receives Award of Merit.

ASTM International Committee E28 on Mechanical Testing has presented Award of Merit to Christopher McCowan, project leader of the Impact Verification Program at NIST in Boulder, CO. An active member of E28 since 1992, McCowan was recognized for his notable leadership and contributions to the development of standards in the field of impact testing. He has worked extensively on the constant revision of ASTM E23, Standard Test Methods for Notched Bar Impact Testing of Metallic Materials. Read More

EPRI to coordinate electric grid monitoring initiative.

EPRI will coordinate meetings of North American SynchroPhasor Initiative through 2015. NASPI is a collaborative effort among US DOE, EPRI, and North American electric utilities, vendors, consultants, researchers, and academics to improve power system reliability and visibility through wide-area measurement and control. It is working to advance deployment and use of networked phasor measurement devices, phasor data-sharing, applications development and use, and research/analysis. Read More

Bolivian Government Accepts ASTM Standards for amusement rides.

At amusement ride safety seminar in La Paz, Bolivia on August 23 of 2013, Bolivian officials announced acceptance of amusement ride safety standards developed by ASTM International Committee F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices. Seminar focused on amusement industry sector growth as well as importance of having comprehensive safety programs for all facets of business. Incorporation of ASTM standards by IBNORCA, national standards body of Bolivia, was made possible through MOU signed in 2002. Read More

Evanhoe and Kimball receive industry leadership appointments.

AIM congratulates Chuck Evanhoe, of Evanhoe & Associates, as well as Dan Kimball, Principal of SRA International, for their appointments to leadership positions with INCITS and SC31, respectively. Chuck Evanhoe has been selected as Chair for INCITS SG on Internet of Things, a group that will create standards for next generation of innovation in AIDC industry, with focus on growth of IoT worldwide. National Program aims to grow clean energy expertise.

ASTM Subcommittee C09.45 is working on 3 proposed standards for roller-compacted concrete: ASTM WK33682, Test Method for Preparation, Compaction and Density Determination of Roller-Compacted Concrete Specimens by Means of the Gyratory Compactor; ASTM WK41101, Practice for Molding Roller-Compacted Concrete in Beam Molds Using a Vibrating Hammer; and ASTM WK42461, Test Method for Density (Unit Weight) and Air Content (Pressure Method) of Freshly Mixed Roller-Compacted Concrete.
