AEM names Charlie O'Brien as senior vice president.

AEM has named Charlie O'Brien as senior vice president in recognition of his expanded leadership responsibilities for the association, including activities under AEM's new strategic plan to better serve all members' current and future business-development needs. O’Brien has taken a leadership role with responsibilities in development of strategic initiatives to achieve the plan’s Key Result Area goals and objectives, and was instrumental in development of AG CONNECT Expo and Summit. JILA Physicists achieve evaporative cooling of molecules.

January 14, 2013

Physicists from JILA, joint institute of NIST and University of Colorado (CU) Boulder, have chilled gas of molecules to very low temperatures by adapting familiar process by which hot cup of coffee cools. Specifically, researchers developed magnetic trap and technique to achieve evaporative cooling of hydroxyl molecules. This demonstration, reported in December 20, 2012 issue of Nature, marks first time evaporative cooling has been achieved with molecules. Read More

ASTM elects Daniel S. Janikowski to board of directors.

January 14, 2013

Daniel S. Janikowski, technical manager at Plymouth Tube Co., has been elected to serve 3-year term on ASTM International board of directors. An ASTM fellow and Award of Merit recipient, Janikowski, who joined ASTM International in 1989, currently serves as chairman of Subcommittee A01.10 on Stainless and Alloy Steel Tubular Products. At Plymouth Tube Co., Janikowski assists customers with materials selection, specifications, testing, and analysis for power plant heat transfer applications. Read More

BIO urges increased renewable fuel production.

Brent Erickson of BIO released statement in response to speech by American Petroleum Institute CEO Jack Gerard. Experts are projecting an American energy renaissance and achievement of energy self-reliance within a few decades. Renewable fuels and energy efficiency will make substantial contributions if there is a long-term, stable policy in place. Still, API contrarily calls for long-term continuation of oil and gas subsidies and does not address state of all U.S. energy resources. Read More

NIST Contributes to top science stories of 2012.

Physicsworld's top 10 breakthroughs of the year include first detection of large-scale motion of galaxy clusters based on kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. Discover magazine's 100 top stories of the year includes discovery of El Gordo, largest galaxy cluster ever found. Both discoveries were based on microwave data taken with Atacama Cosmology Telescope in Chile, which has camera made of superconducting sensors based on NIST design and superconducting amplifiers/electronics made at NIST. NIST scientists and engineers have been recognized as inventors in variety of research areas, including biosciences, building/fire research, materials science, and manufacturing. During 2012, patents were awarded for technologies such as: Harvesting of Processed Carbon Nanotubes; Fabrication Method of Topographically Modulated Microstructures Using Pattern Homogenization with UV Light; Recirculating Temperature Wave Focusing Chromatography; and Dielectric Resonator Thermometers. John J. Tracy, CTO of The Boeing Company and Senior VP of Engineering, Operations and Technology, has joined NIST's Visiting Committee on Advanced Technology. Under Secretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST Director Patrick Gallagher selected Tracy to serve 3-year term on agency's primary private-sector policy advisory group. Standards play an important role in bolstering winter camping by setting down guidelines that make those activities safe and comfortable. ISO has developed ISO 5912:2011, Camping tents, which sets down safety and performance requirements for these outdoor abodes. ASTM D4522-04(2012), Standard Performance Specification for Feather and Down Fillings for Textile Products, establishes performance specifications for natural or synthetic fillings used in sleeping bags, pillows, and winter apparel. Scientists mimic fireflies to make brighter LEDs.

January 10, 2013

Researchers from Belgium, France, and Canada studied internal structure of firefly lanterns and identified unexpected pattern of jagged scales that enhanced the lanterns’ glow. They applied that knowledge to LED design to create an LED overlayer that mimicked the natural structure. This overlayer, which increased LED light extraction by up to 55%, could be tailored to existing diode designs. The work is published in a pair of papers in Optical Society’s open-access journal Optics Express. Read More

ASABE Revises animal-drawn equipment lighting/marking standard.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) revised ANSI/ASAE EP576.2, Lighting and Marking of Animal-Drawn Equipment, so that its scope includes specifications for pony carts; previous version contained recommendations only for animal-drawn wagons and buggies. Safety professionals, working with Amish advisory committees in several U.S. states, identified need to address use of low-profile pony carts that are commonly operated by children. Read More
