Bostik Executive joins Adhesive and Sealant Council Board.

Effective immediately, Bob Marquette, President and CEO of Bostik, Inc. and Senior VP of Bostik worldwide, will join ASC Board of Directors. Marquette oversees all aspects of Bostik’s Americas operations, which includes 13 facilities and 910 employees. During his 35 years with Bostik, he has occupied various leadership and directorial positions involving nonwovens business, tape and label unit, industrial adhesives business, automotive segment, and global accounts. EPA Report covers children's health and environment in America.

EPA has released "America’s Children and the Environment, Third Edition," a comprehensive compilation of information from variety of sources. Report shows trends for contaminants in air, water, food, and soil that may affect children; concentrations of contaminants in the bodies of children and women of child-bearing age; and childhood illnesses and health conditions. Report also incorporates revisions to address peer review and public comments on draft materials released in 2011. Read More

AIA sounds alarm on economic downturn report.

According to Marion C. Blakey, President and CEO of AIA, contraction of the U.S. economy in the fourth quarter underscores AIA's warning for the past 18 months that severe across the board budget cuts—both to defense and non-defense discretionary spending—threaten to throw the economy into a tailspin. In less than 30 days, unless Congress and the White House act, sequestration will kick in, leading to higher unemployment, reduced tax revenue, and lower consumer spending. Read More

Revised BGA Guideline expands focus on mechanical reliability.

February 1, 2013

C revision of IPC-7095, Design and Assembly Process Implementation for BGAs, will help design, assembly, inspection, and repair personnel improve reliability of ball grid arrays (BGAs) and fine-pitch ball grid arrays (FBGAs) in high-density applications. Guideline includes expanded information on mechanical failure issues that occur after assembly. In addition to BGA inspection and repair, guidelines address reliability issues and use of Pb-free joint criteria associated with BGAs. Read More

NAM Board of Directors gains proven manufacturing executives.

NAM Board of Directors will see Caterpillar, Inc. chairman and CEO Doug Oberhelman as chair and Tenneco, Inc. chairman and CEO Gregg Sherrill as vice chair. Also, Materion Technical Materials president Al Lubrano will serve as chair of SMM Group, while Neenah Enterprises, Inc. president and CEO Thomas Riordan will serve as its vice chair. February ANSI Caucus to feature safety management expert.

January 31, 2013

Scheduled for February 8, 2013, ANSI Caucus Luncheon will feature David Johnson, director of the office for technical programs and coordination activities in the directorate of technical support and emergency management at U.S. Department of Labor’s OSHA. Mr. Johnson began work at OSHA in 2012, where he oversees both its NRTL program and its Variance program. He previously served as safety director to several U.S. national parks and was an active duty soldier in the U.S. Army from 1984–2005. Read More

IPC Comments on Proposed Revisions to USML Category XI.

IPC commended U.S. State Department for enumerating printed boards in proposed revisions to Category XI (military electronics) of U.S. Munitions List (USML) and urged modification of proposed language to more clearly express controls on PCBs for ITAR-controlled defense electronics. IPC's John Mitchell lauded necessity of "strong and clear export controls" and expressed gratitude for opportunity to offer recommendations on further clarifying treatment of printed boards on USML. ASTM Committee revises sieve terminology standard.

ASTM E1638, Terminology Relating to Sieves, Sieving Methods and Screening Media was developed by Subcommittee E29.01, part of ASTM Committee E29 on Particle and Spray Characterization. Standard reflects the latest technological advances in particle size analysis and particle separation. Terms are related to the manufacture of standard test sieves and screening media as well as methods, analysis, procedures, and equipment for sizing and separating particles. Read More

AASHTO Executive Director commends US DOT Secretary LaHood.

AASHTO Executive Director John Horsley commended U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood for his leadership during the past 4 years. According to Horsley, fatalities have dropped by about 5,000 deaths per year on LaHood's watch, and distracted driving is a national priority today because of his personal zeal. ASTM Standard addresses testing of hand hygiene products.

January 31, 2013

Approved by Committee E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials and Alternative Control Agents, ASTM E2897 describes the use of pigskin as an alternative to human hands in testing the efficacy of hand hygiene products in combating contamination. Standard will permit testing of pathogens that may be encountered in a healthcare environment but would not be tested on human subjects. It also permits testing of conditions that cannot be simulated in a test tube. Read More

Debuting with 309 exhibitors from 18 countries, premiere edition of EXPO PACK Guadalajara will take place February 27 to March 1, 2013. Enrique Guzman, director of PMMI’s Latin America office reported that 100% of available booth space is taken and noted that the show was announced less than 7 months ago. AAI and MPIF sign MOU to advance workplace safety.

Aluminum Association and Metal Powder Industries Federation announced memorandum of understanding to cooperate in sharing of information in area of metal powder safety. Powder producing members will support one another where appropriate and when feasible by participating in regional workshops and meetings concerning dust hazards and promotion of safety in plant operations. FMA CEO receives CMA Leadership Award.

Ed Youdell, President and CEO of FMA, received CMA Leadership Award from NAM's Council of Manufacturing Associations. Award recognized Youdell's leadership in creating the concept of a national Manufacturing Day and bringing together other industry-leading organizations including NAM, The Manufacturing Institute, and U.S. Commerce Department's Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership to collaborate as co-producers. NREL's RSF influences new high performance buildings.

The Research Support Facility at NREL demonstrates energy savings every day as 1,800 NREL staff start their workdays in a 360,000 ft² Class A office building that generates as much electricity as it uses, thanks to rooftop photovoltaics. The 50,000 ft² Bullitt Center in Seattle is being built with one goal in mind — to be the greenest, most energy-efficient commercial building in the world. SME seeks artwork submissions for display in Contemporary Art Gallery during RAPID Additive Manufacturing Solutions Conference and Exposition, which will be held in Pittsburgh, PA from June 10–13, 2013. Contemporary Art Gallery will recognize artists who use additive manufacturing, 3D printing, or 3D imaging technologies to create works of art. By March 4, artists must submit renderings in JPG file format along with their credentials and list of processes used to create said artwork. Annual Reports and Procedural Compliance Forms are due Jan 31.

ANSI and its Procedural and Standards Administration department wish to remind all ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group administrators to ISO that the Procedural Compliance Forms and 2012 TAG Annual Reports must be submitted no later than January 31, 2013, to the ANSI PSA department. Failure to submit these required documents by deadline may jeopardize organization’s status as an ANSI-accredited U.S. TAG and TAG Administrator. Read More
