EPA App and Website lets users check waterway health.

Accessible from smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers, How’s My Waterway uses GPS technology or user-entered zip code or city name to retrieve information on condition of lakes, rivers, and streams across USA. Waterways within 5 miles of search location are identified as unpolluted, polluted, or unassessed. Once specific lake, river, or stream is selected, information is provided on type of pollution and what has been done by EPA/states to reduce it. Read More

AAMA Keynote Speaker emphasizes importance of networking.

During AAMA Fall Conference (Albuquerque, NM, October 14–17), speaker Thom Singer discussed networking strategies and importance of forming long-term business relationships. Proposed Standard addresses geosynthetic turf reinforcement mats.

Proposed standard ASTM WK38408, Specification for Turf Reinforcement Mats, will focus solely on geosynthetic mats used to prevent soil erosion in drainage areas and on steep slopes. Subcommittee D35.05 on Geosynthetic Erosion Control is developing this standard, and D35 member Robert Mackey says its approval will simplify user's ability to specify product that meets minimum manufacturing quality controls for standardized list of physical and performance properties. At SAE Convergence 2012, engineering professionals Matthew Smith (Navistar Inc.) and Monika Manarcin (Palladium Energy) were honored with Trevor O. Jones Outstanding Paper Award for their work, Challenges and Opportunities in Adoption of Hybrid Technologies in Medium and Heavy Duty Applications 2012 Update (2012-01-9005). ASTM WK38166, Specification for Manufacture of Precast Reinforced Concrete Three-Sided Structures for Culverts and Storm Drains Designed According to AASHTO LRFD, is being developed by Subcommittee C13.07 on Acceptance Specification and Precast Concrete Box Sections, part of ASTM International Committee C13 on Concrete Pipe. ELFA's MLFI-25 for September shows new business volume increases.

ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) for September shows overall new business volume up 16% from 2011, up 19% from August, and up 16% year-to-date. While receivables over 30 days decreased to 1.8% from 1.9% in August and were down 22% compared to 2011, charge-offs were up from August at 0.5% and down 44% compared to 2011. Credit approvals increased to 79.6%, and 54% of participants reported submitting more transactions for approval during September (down from 65% in August). Read More

BIO President urges protection of Renewable Fuel Standard.

During keynote speech at RETECH 2012, BIO President Jim Greenwood told attendees that now is the time for a call to arms for the renewable industry standard to support and protect America's Renewable Fuel Standard. Regarding current requests that EPA waive the RFS for one year, Greenwood said, "The impact of an RFS waiver on advanced biofuels would be devastating. NASA's John Vickers joins AeroDef Executive Committee.

John Vickers, assistant manager of Materials and Processes Laboratory at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, has joined the Executive Committee of AeroDef Manufacturing 2013 exposition and technical conference. Reference Materials to help get lead out of paints.

To help manufacturers adhere to new regulations intended to reduce risk of lead poisoning in children, researchers at NIST have developed standard test samples of lead paint films that are sometimes found on children's products as well as a guide to their use. Manufacturers can use "reference" materials to demonstrate that test methods yield accurate results when used to show compliance of products with CSPIA of 2008, which requires that paints contain no more than 90 mg of lead per kg of paint. NIST Software checks performance of biometrics applications.

Biometric Conformance Test Software for Data Interchange Formats (BioCTS2012), developed by NIST, is used to assess implementations of biometrics data standard ANSI/NIST-ITL 1-2011, which defines method for digitally encoding and storing biometric data so it can be shared by ID systems used by law enforcement, military, and homeland security agencies.  Solution expands types and amounts of information forensic scientists can share and is being adopted worldwide to identify people. EPA offers tips to protect health and save money/energy.

With winter approaching, EPA is highlighting 10 tips for Americans to protect their health, save money, and lower energy, such as maintaining heating equipment to lower utility bills, lowering temperature in homes to increase savings up to 12%, and checking for water leaks and installing WaterSense products to save approximately $170 per year. To protect health, people should test home for radon gas and download EPA's free AIRNow app to get current particle pollution and ozone levels. ASTM Approves Standard for coated fabric products storage life.

Proposed standard ASTM WK37298, Test Method for Determining Storage Life of Coated Fabric Products, will provide nondestructive test for stored equipment to be evaluated for continued suitability over time. National Awards recognize State DOT leadership, innovation.

President's Transportation Awards, earned by 14 state departments of transportation (DOTs), will be presented on November 18 during AASHTO Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA. Also, AASHTO announced 2012 recipients of Alfred E. Johnson, Thomas H. McDonald, Francis B. Francois, and George S. Bartlett awards. ASTM Committee forms rare earth materials subcommittee.

ASTM International Committee F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials has formed subcommittee F40.04 on Rare Earth Materials, which will promote knowledge, stimulate research, and implement technology via development of standards for rare earth materials. This subcommittee, which will hold its first meeting during F40 meetings (November 14–15), welcomes participation from all interested parties, particularly industry material researchers and innovators using rare earth materials. ASTM Plastics Committee approves insulated vinyl siding standard.

October 23, 2012

ASTM Committee D20 on Plastics, recognizing emergence of vinyl siding with integrated foam plastic insulation as separate product category, has developed ASTM D7793, Specification for Insulated Vinyl Siding. According to D20 member Dave Johnston, standard provides "uniform basis for producing the siding according to recognized levels of quality and performance, especially with respect to claims for thermal insulation." Developed by D02.94, Coordinating Subcommittee on Quality Assurance and Statistics, part of Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, ASTM D7778 provides overview of steps needed in an interlaboratory study to obtain precision and bias statements, particularly as they relate to standards for petroleum products.
