SME Identifies first energy conservation program participants.

SME announced first 5 student chapters to participate in energy conservation program focused on in-depth assessments of manufacturing facilities. With $292,000 grant from U.S. Department of Energy, SME will partner its student chapters with existing Industrial Assessment Centers (IACs) at universities nationwide. SME student chapters include those from Iowa State University, Oregon State University, Tennessee Technological University, University of Dayton, and UMass Dartmouth. Read More

AIA Warns 2013 Outlook is threatened by impending fiscal cliff.

December 7, 2012

At AIA year-end luncheon, AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey warned attendees of an impending "'Thelma and Louise' moment, when we careen off into the void," and called for "real work, real negotiation and a real solution" to sequestration. Blakey devoted most of her remarks to 300 members of news media and industry present, pointing out that it is difficult to forecast next year's aerospace and defense industry outlook given uncertainties at hand. Manufacturers urge Senate to pass Russia PNTR bill.

NAM sent Key Vote letters to senators urging passage of the Russia and Moldova Jackson-Vanik Repeal Act, which will grant the United States Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) with Russia to grow U.S. exports and secure market access to help create American jobs. According to NAM Senior VP for Policy and Government Relations, Aric Newhouse, failure to pass this PNTR legislation will only set us further behind in the growing Russian market and hurt American jobs and manufacturing workers.

Manufacturing Optimism Drops in current climate of apprehension.

According to NAM/IndustryWeek Survey of Manufacturers, manufacturers optimistic about future dropped nearly 40% since beginning of 2012. Survey finds recent slowdown in manufacturing activity, uncertainty caused by fiscal cliff, and poor business climate are having significant negative effects on businesses throughout USA. Sales expectations over next year also dropped, from 4.7% in March to 1.0%, and predictions about capital spending and hiring turned negative for first time since 4Q 2009. Read More

ANSI Committee announces upcoming meeting dates.

ANSI Energy Efficiency Standardization Coordination Collaborative (EESCC) has announced web meeting dates for its 5 working groups, as well as its inaugural in-person plenary meeting in January. EESCC is launching work on a standardization roadmap to help advance energy efficiency for the United States. Beginning with first web meeting, EESCC working groups will initiate standards needs assessment and lay strategic groundwork for their portion of the roadmap. Read More

NAM Economist Says Fiscal Cliff is taking toll on manufacturers.

December 6, 2012

NAM Chief Economist Chad Moutray called November manufacturing report from Institute for Supply Management (ISM) "a clear indication of the negative impact that the looming fiscal cliff is already having on our economy." Moutray continued, commenting how survey's employment index, which contracted for the first time in 3 years, shows that manufacturers are reducing their workforce. "Without a resolution to the fiscal cliff," said Moutray, "the economy will remain weak and stagnant." Read More

AIA, Industry Leaders push for solution to fiscal cliff.

At National Press Club, 4 industry leaders participated in panel discussion on impacts of sequestration budget cuts on America's economy and national security. Panel also drew attention to letter from aerospace and defense industry CEOs voicing support for current talks and urging President Obama to continue negotiations with Congress on action to avert upcoming "fiscal cliff." ANSI Panel releases workshop report on CBRNE standards.

ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel released workshop report on status of efforts to implement national strategy on chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives equipment standards. One-day workshop included representatives of small businesses, standards developing organizations, government agencies, and program developers. Participants discussed current challenges impeding execution of CBRNE national strategies, as well as roles expected to be played by government and industry. NextGen Technology improves safety, efficiency in western CO.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced activation of NextGen technology – Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) – that will help pilots address inclement weather around Montrose Regional Airport in western Colorado (CO). Specifically, WAM improves safety and efficiency by allowing air traffic controllers to track aircraft in mountainous areas that are outside radar coverage.

ASTM Infant Swings Specification has been adopted in CPSC rule.

Provisions from ASTM International F2088-12a, Consumer Safety Specification for Infant Swings, have been incorporated in U.S. federal mandatory safety standard that was passed unanimously by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in order to improve safety of infant swings and prevent child injuries and deaths. This adoption of ASTM F2088 means all infant swings introduced into commerce must comply with standard, which defines "infant swing." Read More

NREL, BESC Researchers solve puzzle of plant architecture.

NREL and BioEnergy Science Center (BESC) scientists combined microscopic imaging methods to gain greater understanding of relationships between biomass cell wall structure and enzyme digestibility. According to principal investigator Dr. Shi-You Ding of NREL, imaging technologies allowed interdisciplinary team to view plant architecture at scales from millimeter to nanometer. Solar Radiation Database updated to cover 20 years of data.

December 5, 2012

NREL and collaborators released 20-year updated version of U.S. National Solar Radiation Database. Web-based technical report provides information about solar and meteorological data for 1,454 locations in USA and its territories. Covering years 1991–2010, updated database includes data from 2006–2010 for first time. Cloud algorithms for modeling solar radiation data are also included, along with State University of New York model for gridded data based on satellite observations. IPC releases PCB industry results for October 2012.

According to IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 1.1% in Oct 2012 from Oct 2011, and bookings decreased 9.2% year over year. Compared to previous month, rigid PCB shipments were down 12.4% and rigid bookings fell 14.3%. Flexible circuit shipments in Oct 2012 were up 15.6%, and bookings were down 18.9% compared to October 2011. Compared to previous month, flexible circuit shipments decreased 10.3% and flex bookings were down 0.5%. Read More

NREL's Research Support Facility earns second LEED® Platinum.

December 4, 2012

Research Support Facility on campus of NREL in Golden, CO has earned its second LEED® Platinum designation for new construction from U.S. Green Building Council. LEED designation was awarded to 138,000 sq-ft RSF Expansion project, which added third wing to main office building. Between finish of initial RSF and start of expansion wing, NREL's Advanced Commercial Buildings Research team worked with design-build team and identified strategies to reduce energy use in RSF expansion by additional 17%.
